UPEH THE IJUUH HIEHHHU Open the door, Rlchard, open the door has become, almost overnight, the teen age bobby soxers pet expresslon What does lt mean? I frankly do not know not even, when my three year old bobby soxer at home sings it from morn til night This ex pression must represent something that speaks in the language of youth something that satisfies an inborn trait or need Richard, so the song goes did not open the door, but I am wondering lf modern youth has found 1n this apparently lugubrious expression, a call that 1S as natural as the chirp of the first robin in the spring as refreshing and invigoratmg as the call of spring itself Could not this need be the realization that only the 1ndiv1d ual himself can open the door ' to the future to the wonders of science, arts and letters to the marvels of industrlal agricultur al and economlc security to the full realization of economic and social Justice? Is it true that youth gropes to find the abun dant l1fe in a world whlch seems to be on the verge of the most dered as the rest of us about the solution of the most complex problems of today? About the ethics of a global world whose heretofore boundless and limitless shores have suddenly been ob llterated? Modern youth faces the future courageously Through the maze of modern sc1ent1fic creations he sees clearly the rela tionsh1p of things to man and reallzes that the human factor is the unpredictable and unknown quantity Men do such horrify ing things to each other in the name of love and peace and God, that our modern youth is stultified in his thmking and readily re sponds favorably to open the door for it is only through open ing doors and wmdows, only through sincere and honest thought only through the right education of man himself that the dark or iron curtam of ignorance and lack of understanding can be lifted The right kind of educatlon teaches man to think for himself, t treat all men as brothers, to recognize the value and worth of man himself The young man or woman of today, whether a veteran or a prospective graduate of one of our numerous educational institu tions, is determined to solve his problems constructively and ob yectively to build a home where the glow of the hearth fire shall brmg harmony peace and affectionate understanding, where com munities and nations shall learn to live together in peace, harmo ny and fr1endly cooperation, where the Spirit of Christ on Earth shall relgn supreme That I believe is what modern youth dreams about when he lavishes nn Open the Door, Richard, Open the Door To the Graduating Class of 1947 my very best wishes for health happiness, and success in the attainment of this ideal and Godspeed Cordially, fuel ij CF ' 9 gg ' ii critical period since the Dawn of History ?
