WELTZIN To MR. WELTZIN, who has guided and led us through our high school years, ever ready and willing to offer advice and lend a helping hand, we, the Class of 1942, gratefully dedicate this third 'volume of the Ponier . FGREWORD We present this Ponier as a picture of American high school youth during the eventful and solemn years of 1941 and 1942. We have pictured how we tried to .continue our Work as usual, knowing that life does not stand still- even in war-time. Through education We believe that We canr find the truth to freedom. In years to come may this book remind you of that search and our reward-a free, democratic world. We will carry on! ' ' In Memory Dr. H. M. Board of Education In appreciation of their sincere efforts for the benefit of our school, we Wish to pay tribute to the Board of Education' Under the presidency of Sletten C. Olson, this board supervises the Warren Public Schools, the Nor- mal Training Department, and the educational department of the N. Y. A. school. Dr. C. H. Holmstrom has been appointed to the board to succeed Dr. H. M. Blegen, who had been a member for twenty-two years, serving as presi- dent for sixteen years prior to his death on March 26, 1942. 1885 1942 Dr. H. M. Blegen, for twenty-two years a mem- ber of the board, had also served as president of the board of education for sixteen years prior to his death on Ma-rch 26, 1942. He was at all times vitally in- terested in the welfare of the school and Will be greatly missed as an aggressive leader and promoter of education. Besides Working with the school board, Dr. Blegen was Chief of Staff of the Warren Hospital, Marshall County Coroner, and president of the board of administration of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. A leader in the state as Well, Dr. Blegen was a former president of the Red River Valley Medical Society, had been vice president of the Oakland Park Sanatorium at Thief River Falls, and at one time assistant city physician for the city of Minneapolis. NEVER since the beginning of our democracy have we as a nation or individuals faced such a complex situation as that confronting us today in 19.42. It is a period of change, of strife and insecurity affecting each one of us,' yet, out of the present chaos new leadership will develop to assume responsibilities. Our ideas may have to alter, our standands may change and new -visions be realized, but the ideals and fundamentals as set forth by our forefathers in the con- stitution must through our efforts be kept nurtured. Educationally it is the responsibility of our schools to endeavor to produce material for the leadership neces- sary for assuming the new responsibilities and to cultivate individuals so that the very t principles of unselyishness, s . tolerance and love for our . neighbor may again establish peace and liberty upon this earth. Following a concert of Christmas music by the band and the brass ensemble under the direction of Mir. Nordvold, the mixed chorus and vocal groups director, Miss Sitz, presented the Annunciation, the Vision of the Shepherds, and the Visit of the Magi, in form of a choralogue. Football In spite of rain, mud, late harvest and in-juries, Coach Lysaker was able to mould a fast, well-balanced team that played clean, smart and hard-hitting football. In a schedule of eight games the Ponies were able to win three, losing the others by close margins. The first game with McIntosh ended in- a well deserved victory for the Macs. Warren's difficulty in that game was l-ack of enough pre-game practice due to late threshing operations. The following game marked one of the high lights of the season with an 18 to 0 victory over the Red Lake Eagles. October 17 was a drastic day for the Pony warriors 'When they bowed to their old rivals, Thief River Falls. After a late rally by the Ponies, they fell one touchdown short of victory. After a decisive victory over Crookston Cathedral, good wea- ther again took many boys from CAPTAIN ROOD practice and the result was a 26-7 victory for Crookston Central the following week. Q The final game, which was play- ed on a snow covered field, proved to be the best of the season. In this game the Warren battlers were nosed out by a highly favored East Grand Forks team with a well-eXe- cuted pass play in the final minutes of the game. The following members of the squad earned letters: Seniors-Cap- tain Omar Rood, Dana Allen, John Gilbertson, Henry Hanson, Arnold Lamberson, Howard Lamberson, Kermit Olson, and William Rogersg Juniors-Hubert Anderson, Charles Cheney, Clyde Culver, Joseph Fan- fulik, Warren Fulks, Glen Lindberg, and John Zneroldg Sophomores- Lloyd Flod, Calvin Melgard, and Ro- bert Snyder. 1. Newfolden .............. Basketball practice in Warren High opened o-n November 14, with ten veterans, six of them lettermen-, reporting to Coach Lysaker. With only three lettermen lost through graduation. prospects for a successful season 'Were very bright. The Ponies looked promising in their impressive victory over Hallock in the season's opener. The Ponies held Hallock to a lone field goal throughout the entire game while presenting a, fast breaking offense themselves. From here the Ponies went on to defeat every team in the Big Four in the conference at least once. The outstanding pre-Christmas game Was the Warren-East Grand Forks contest. In this game the Ponies hit their stride, presenting an air tight defense and a tricky, efficient offense that baffled the East Siders and led to an easy victory for Warren. After their holiday trip the team came back to defeat Thief River Falls 33 to 24. Against Crookston the Ponies again looked good, and the Pirates fell hard before a fast driving offense. The closing game of the season found Warren nosing out the Pirates 24 to 22 and gaining first place in the conference standings with five victories and one defeat. Out of a total of 25 games played Warren won 22 and was defeat- ed only 3 times. They had a total of 826 points to their opponents 583 and averaged 33 points per game while holding the opposition to 23.
