When students need to talk to someone who likes them but -fdoesn't love them, they see their counselor. With the maturity of experience of knowledge, the counselor is able to lhelp a student put problems into perspective without becoming emotionally involved, as a family member would. Mr. John B. Jenkins, Jr. Mrs. Chloe Spence Secretaries A nucleus of activity, the main office staff again met the demands of a society of approximately seven hundred and fifty students, and an ever-increasing number of faculty members. The success of our smooth-running school and office is due to the efficiency of our two secretaries, Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Spence. They greet and give necessary information to frantic students, teachers, and parents. They really are great. Thank you Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Spence. Mrs. Lillian Porter What's behind the green door? It offers a wide selection of novels, magazines and newspapers. It also provides a variety of reference books and re- search materials which are indispensable to the student writing a term paper. Students acquire the materials for these papers with the assistance of Warren's librarian, Mrs. Sheridan. Mrs. Betty Maddox, Assistant Mr. Charles Wentz Mathematics is becoming increasingly important in today's scientificalIy-ori- ented societyp there are few occupational fields which do not require a basic knowledge of mathematics. Through basic and continuing studies in mathe- matical fields students are preparing themselves for a successful future. Mr. James Craig Math l I Mr. Roy Jameson is l Mr. Glen Gainer, Jr. Mr. Vincent Scragg Mr. Jack Watkins Social Studies -rf' 'uf ,fm all in Z his M A The Social Studies department is in- volved with the study of the history, ge- ography, and the government of the world. American History is a required course for all Juniors. In this course a study of the history of our young nation is pres- ented. Fw The government course teaches the f functions and history of our democratic government to all students of the Senior Class. as Mr. Barry Guinn SUPERIOR AWARD WINNERS AT WARREN SCIENCE FAIR: Row I: Debbie Gorham, Janet Fields, Jackie Rifflep Row 2: Lynn Mercer, Norma Gusfke, Gene Spurbeck, David Barreh. Science Lynn Mercer and Gene Spurbeck Mrs. Reta Mae Sfalnaker Superior winners at Science Fair at Marieiia College The Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Biology, Earth Science and General Science, give a student a deeper insight into life and help him to relate himself to the universe in which he lives. These sciences make the student think for himself and lead him to ask questions about himself and all living matter. He begins to see the relationship between himself and his environment, which constantly influences him. Through the microscope he sees the cell, the structural and functional unit of life, magnified many times its size. ln the lab he discovers through experimentation the basic properties of matter and the laws of nature. He learns about atoms which make up all matter and molecules which are constantly moving and reacting with their environment. Seeing life and matter at this complex level and attempting to understand it increases the student's appreciation of himself, his world, and his Creator. Mr. Max Smith I Communication being essential in this modern age, the English de- partment strives to provide a pro- gram which will benefit every stu- dent. To strengthen word power and understanding this department offers courses in the study of gram- mar and literature. Mrs. Rita St. Clair Mrs. Jane Williams English Miss lone Morgenstern Miss Mariorie Stephens Mrs. Kristin Bolden Languages The study of foreign languages is a basic part of any hi h school cur- riculum. At Warren, Spanish and French are offered to the students. The French and Spanish students make use of the language lab designed to aid in the teaching of correct pronunciation. In addition to learning the language itself, attention is given to acquiring a broader background in the culture of the people whose language is being studied. This knowl- edge is effectively acquired by reading the literature of these cultures. Basically, language study gives much more than a new means of commu- nication with others, for it also enriches the students with a greater knowl- edge of the various people of our world. Mrs. Sheila Brown Mrs. Agnes Wooters A working knowledge of basic business skills is the goal of the students taking the business courses. Typing, shorthand, general business, bookkeeping, and office practice are offered to acquire the needed skills. Personal needs are also fulfilled when a student takes one or more of these courses. By learning the basic business skills, the student becomes well-rounded. Many seniors helped make the final year an unforgettable one, as Bob Dunfee and Donna Benson served as President and Vice-Pres. of Student Council, and Rhonda Bowen as Treasurer. Pat Burt and Terry Coffman were chosen as our Miss Charming and Mr. lrresistible. On October 30th, Rhonda Bowen was crowned Homecoming Queen and Diann Welch was Senior attendant. In the sports line-up, the Seniors proved to be outstanding in all fields, whether it be in football, basket- ball, track, cross-country, wrestling, golf, managing, cheerleading, or rooting the team on, the Warren Sen- iors have been compeitive and good sportsmen. In return, they were the winners. The Seniors final year consisted of ordering announcements and name cards, being measured for caps and gowns, exchanging senior pictures, the choosing of a daisy as a class flower, and designing and sewing a blue and gold flag. The events were many during the year, but the most memorable were the Junior-Senior Prom, Baccalau- reate on May 21st, and the Senior Picnic on May 24th. Then, on June 2, 1972, after twelve years of hard wofk and many achievements, the Senior Class followed their motto as they received their diplomas: The road we follow today, is the road we lead tomorrow. The ioy of finally being an upperclassman was ours, as the class of '74' entered Warren with one year down and three to go. Many sophomores participated in sports. The reserve football team defeated Belpre and had the best record in five years. We elected Norma Gustke as our charming homecoming attendant, and Susie Reeseeand Joe McGirr were chosen as our class Sweethearts. Among the activities of the sophomores were sponsoring a dance to raise money, to learn how to drive in the Driver's Ed. simulator, screaming at games, ordering class rings, and iust getting away with what- ever we could! The screaming paid off, because the enthusiastic sophomores won the coveted spirit stick. For the maiority of the sophomores, this year has been successful and prosperous, promising and encouraging, and a year never to be forgotten. A good yearbook is the result of much dedication, hard work, and ingenuity. Membership on the staff has meant the investment of long hours spent in working on layouts or cropping pictures. L Sometimes cries of anguish could be heard when a headline would not count, tears came when the picture turned out blank, exclomations of delight were heard when an idea turned out right, and laughter often filled our room when students worked on a common project which symbolized the efforts of the staff of the 1972 SHIELD to publish a yearbook for their fellow students at Warren High School. t The Shield Staff Y-Teens The W.H.S. Chapter of the Y-Teens was kept very busy this year. The young Warren team overcame its inexperience with hard work, desire, and teammanship which contributed to a spirited season. Daily workouts consisting of running, pitching, batting, and scrimmaging were set by Coach Cecil Johnson in order to condition the boys for the strenuous season. 11z,k:Qieit,,, . a Ready and waiting. It's a long trip to the moon, and an even longer trip to the stars. But give our Warren High School Cross Country Team a place to start and stand back. It may take them some time to do it but you can count on our Warriors to try. Our team had a very successful season this year. A share of the credit for this should go to Coach Watkins, who did a fine iob of getting the team together. It's not easy to run Cross Country. Even harder to win. lt takes a lot of effort, ambition, soul and teamwork. But then, that's WARREN. Denise Hooper Head Cheerleader Varsity Cheerleaders Seri A ...
