S. lt's good to let your thoughts wander into a reminiscent mood and recall your school days. Since I inherited several million dollars, I have been traveling and in my travels I have remet many of my old school mates. Che day last year I was making reservations on a Pan-American Airline for New York, and as I was boarding my plane, I noticed one of the hostesses' names to be none other than Beverly McKean. I thought I'd ask her if she were the same girl I had graduated with and, sure enough. I found out she was. She was delighted to see me and we made a date to meet. She suggested a swanky nightclub on Park Avenue in New York City. Was I ever surprised to see Robert Carbonneau and Frederick Rice there. They told me that they had been in the nightclub business for 15 years now. I asked if they had any ldea where some of our old classmates were. They ln- formed me that Francis Moran was their chief cook and bottle washer and that he and Virginia Whitney were very happily married with seven children. They also said that Vivian Couture was their prize dancer and singer at the club and I stayed to see her act. She was wonderful. The next day I sald good-bye to my friends promising them I would write. Then I decided to purchase a new car so that I might continue my trip. I stopped at a nice new Cadillac Show- room and whom should I find as the owners, none other than Wayne Wamer and James Durand. David Plante was their chief mechanic. They showed me their newest model Cadillac which was completely automatic. We talked about old times for awhile and then I left promising to remem- ber them to everyone. Before I left New York I went on many sight-seeing tours. Among the most enjoyable of these toms were two in which I know you'll be interested. One was a Beauty Contest In which Patricia McCa.rthy was elected Mrs. America, and the other trip was to an Amusement Park where Wesley Smith and Walter Drenzek were co-owners. They told me they knew about only one of their classmates. They said that Beryle Odlorne was employed as the 'Laughing Lady' in the Fun I-louse and that she loved her work. I just loved my new car but it didn't last long for as I was entering the Merit Parkway I ran headlong into a hot Oldsmobile. I regained consciousness in a hospital. When I came to, I thought I was seeing things. There in front of my bed stood George Mitchell and Stanley Slaby, head Doctors of the Hospital and also my old friend Joyce Bell, head Nurse. Joyce told me that Janet Stedt was the driver of the other car and that she was okay except for a few bruises. She also told me that Whenman Silva had been the ambulance driver and that I owed my quick ar- rival to the hospital to him. My doctors informed me that I ought to get away from the hubbub of the city for awhile and suggested a trip to Africa. On my way to the station I stopped at a jewelry shop to have my damaged watch fixed and there I saw Gloria Hill. She was picking out her diamond and she told me that she and Joe were to be married soon. Two days later I found myself on my way to Africa aboard a large ship. On the way I didn't have anything to do except read, so I read magazines from cover to cover and newspapers inside and out. I was quite alarmed to read of a plane crash in which Louise Bourgault and Margaret Weare were among the missing. I also read how the Globe Trotters had acquired two new players, Richard Holden and Lloyd Rice, and in the wrestling field, Mary Swett was Woman's Cham pion Wrestler. The biggest surprise of all was when I discovered David Award and Roger LaCoste among a tribe of natives. They said that they volunteered tolhelp look for Margaret Weare and Louise Bourgault. They added that the two girls had been found safe and sound and that they were on their way home. They also added that they had taken such a liking to Africa that they decided to remain there to help civilize the tribes of Barbarian-like natives. David Award and Roger l.aCoste said that they had been writing to Dorothy Hrapek who was now happily married. A month passed and I, completely recovered from the accident, planned a trip to my home town. I found this trip to be most satisfying and upon arrival, I immediately went to see the new High School. I found a lot of classmates there. Evelyn Shepherd had taken the place of Mr. Sloan, now retired, and she was teaching Biology and Physics. I wanted to meet the new principal but to my surprise there in back of the large desk sat Mr. Harrington who greeted me with a smile and asked me to sit down. He has done a wonderful job through the years and if there were a Principa1's Hall of Fame, I'm sure he'd be there too. He also had three secretaries now instead of one. He said they were Barbara Carroll, Anita Olson, and Sally Fountain. I asked him if he knew where Charles Reim was and he informed me that Charles was now the manager of the 'Quaboag Hotel . I told him how pleased I was to see the beautiful school he had built. Before I left he told me that Rosemarie Wamlck was the School Nurse and that Carole Murphy was the Superintendent's secretary. That night as I crawled into bed, an exhausted woman, I turned on the radio to listen to some quiet music. An RCA Victor recording was being announced. with satisfaction I realized that it was Paul Tkatz and his Swayback Trio. My days were Complete for I at last had found all my school chums and my weary bones could relax in peace now that my trip had proved success- ful. As I fell asleep I thought of the class of 1959. GOD BLESS THEM ALL. Yours truly, Sharon Stickney anim' 611155 flisfvry A MOON VIEW OF THE CLASS OF 1959 We climbed into our space time retractor so as to get back to the year of 1956 when we were freshmen. We elected our officers in that year - - President - George Shea, Vice President - Patricia McCarthy, Secretary - Joyce Bell and Treasurer - Janet Stedt, During the year, George Shea left and Pat succeeded him: then we elected Alan Charbonneau as our new Vice President. David Award was our Student Council Representative and Miss Lewinski was our class advisor. Uneasiness accompanied us throughout the first few weeks - - - initiation - - - its uncertainty The day come! I ! Seniors were having their fun with us Freshmen as victims, but the day ended with a dance and a treat - - we breathed easily, for it was not as bad as we imagined. Basketball season started. There were quite a few boys from our class that made Junior Varsity Tommy Baron, Butch Moran, George Mitchell, Rog LaCoste, Stanley Slaby, Winky Silva, Lloyd Rice and Dick Holden were our Freshman stars. On the girls team were Janet Stedt, Sally Fountain, Pat McCarthy, Barbara Carroll, Gladys Jarvis and Sharon Stickney. To help our funds out we sold candy at the basketball games. Our Freshman year came to a close and we held a Get Acquainted Dance for our incoming Freshmen. We came back to school all rested after a happy summer, ready to go int the Sophomore year. For class officers that year we had: President - Pat McCarthy, Vice President - Alan Charbonneau, Secretary - Sally Fountain, and Treasurer - Nick Williams, who left school and Bev McKean was elected into that important position. The Student Council Representatives were Dave Award and Beverly McKean. Our class advisor was Miss Lewinski. To earn money for the treasury we sold Warren High banners, and had five dances during that yeah In the Student Body play Fireman Save My Child , Barbara Carroll, Robert Charbonneau, Joyce Bell, Sally Fountain, Gloria Hill, Butch Moran, and Stanley Slaby took part. As a sophomore, Dick Holden made Varsity while Stanley Slaby, Rog LaCoste, Lloyd Rice made the J. V. 's and Charles Reim was the manager. The girls also were active and so Sally Fountain, Barbara Carroll, Sharon Stickney, Pat McCarthy, Janet Stedt, Bel-yle Odiome and Evelyn Shepherd became members of the Girls' Basketball Squad. Another summer went by and we were at the grindstone. We held the title JUNIORS. The class officers were elected after a two-week campaign. They were: President - Charles Reim, Vice President - Janet Stedt, Secretary - Barbara Carroll, and Treasurer - Joyce Bell. Our Student Council Representatives were Vice President, Charles Reim and Secretary was Evelyn Shepherd. Our representatives were Janet Stedt, Carole Murphy and Rog LaCoste. Our class advisor was Miss Burke. Evelyn Shepherd was selected Vice President of the Central Division Mass. Assoc. of Student Councils. The boys' Varsity again included Richard Holden, Rog LaCoste, Stanley Slaby and Lloyd Rice. These boys also helped win our Tri-State Champion. We sure are proud of them! ll The girls' Varsity included Sally Fountain, Co-captain, Janet Stedt, Co-captain, Barbara Carroll, Beryle Odiorne, Sharon Stickney and Evelyn Shepherd. That year we received our rings and we really thought we were top notch wheels. We were now members of the Alma Mater. We put on the Senior Reception which turned out to be beautiful and we received many com- pliments about it. During the year as a result of the Magazine Drive we won our pal Rusty as a mascot plus S50. That sure made the Seniors mad, but our ever faithful in this line, Francis Moran, helped us to reach the top. September 1958 - - we are now the SENIORS of Warren High. Our class officers were: Presi- dent - Charles Reim, Vice President - David Award, Secretary - Barbara Carroll, and Treasurer - Joyce Bell. Our class advisor is Miss Burke. The Student Council representatives were Lloyd Rice, who served as President of the council, Carole Murphy, who was secretary, Janet Stedt, Evelyn Shepherd, Charles Relm and David Award. Evelyn made two trips to meetings of the Executive Board of the Central Division Mass. Assoc. of Student Councils. Once again we won the S50 from the magazine drive and Rusty got a pal George. fThanks, Butchlj We were the first class to go to Worcester to have the Senior Pictures taken. It's a wonder Mr. l-larrington trusted us all that wayl History repeats itself - - The prom held January 16 was a most delightful affair. One more affair - - class trip to Washington, D. C. This will top off our activities as students of Warren High - - for with our graduation we pass on traditions to those who remain, while we take our places in society where we hope to use what we have learned at Warren High. It is now time for us to leave, We know the underclassmen will grieve So the Class of '59 leaves a will. To keep us in their memories still. David Award leaves his masculine charm, To Miss Lewinski, his favorite school marm. Joyce Bell leaves her good-natured ways, To Jackie Wallace, who might need them someday Louise Bourgault leaves Warren High in haste, For we don't think she can be replaced. Robert Carbonneau leaves his Crew-Cul, To Donald Cnarbonneau, who needs a new cut. Barbara Carroll leaves her laughing ways, To Judy Burroughs, for next year's days. Vivian Couture leaves her dainty face, To Dawn Gingras, who'll keep up with the pace. Walter Drenzek leaves his quiet post, To Roger Niemic, who needs it most. James Durand leaves his wit and puns, To William Pursell, who also has tons. Sally Fountain leaves her athletic skill, To her sister, who we hope will do as well. Gloria Hill leaves her diamond from Joe, To Barbara Longo, who is planning to go. Richard Holden leaves his basketball achievement, To next year's team, who will no doubt need it. Dorothy Hrapek leaves her ability to type, To all the F students, so Miss Burke won't gripe. Roger l.aCoste leaves his blushing expressions, To Ted Kordas for embarrassing sessions. Patricia McCarthy leaves her white Cadillac, To her cousin Richard, in the Junior Class. Beverly McKean leaves her shyness, To Lucretia Pisarski, who needs some quietness. George Mitchell leaves his curly, blonde hair, To Billy Perry, whose own head is almost bare. Francis Moran leaves his much-used comb, To all the girls, who leave theirs home. Carole Murphy leaves her place in math, To walk down the matrimonial path. Beryle Odiorne leaves giggling all the while, To Marie Fountain, who never cracks a smile. Anita Olson leaves her studious ways, To Alice Teczar, for future days. David Plante, who's quite a pest, Leaves the job to Daniel Beaudry, who tries his best Charles Reim leaves the office of Class President, To Frederick Hagman for next year's resident. Frederick Rice leaves his head of red hair, To Mr. Gorman, to go with his Irish flare. Lloyd Rice leaves his Student Council Chair, To James Lucia, who we think will get there. Evelyn Shepherd leaves her ambitiousness, To Gordon Granger, who'll do his best. Whenman Silva leaves his noisy attitude, To James Miller, who's always in a quiet mood. Wesley Smith leaves his shy mood, To any of the underclassmen, who are rude. Stanley Slaby leaves his work in the lab, To James Blanchard, who'll find no time to gab. Janet Stedt leaves her height, To Mr. Mejia, who's a little mite. Sharon Stickney leaves her love for riding horses, To Phil Messenger, who needs no riding courses. Mary Swett leaves her piano-playing tactics, To Connie Miskiewiez, so she can practice. Paul Tkatz leaves his guitar, To anyone who thinks they can go far. Rosemarie Wansick leaves her gift of speech, To Diane Brisette, who hasn't far to reach. Wayne Warner leaves fBergerJ his nickname, T0 Hamld fH0f D087 0di01'H9, whose own is nearly the same Margaret Weare leaves her friendliness, To anyone who can do their best. Virginia Whitney leaves her talking ways, To Irene Borowiec, who hasn't talked much through her High School days. But l, I just enjoy myself DON'T QUIT When things go wrong, and you're in doubt Don't get mad, for they might just turn out. Many people get mad and quit right off, But don't you quit, you be the boss. And as you go along you'll see That things will turn out progressively. So let the people know who's king And they'll get along with everything. Some people get mad and run away - - But don't you quit, for you must stay. The day may seem tiresome and dreary too, But just let the time pass along by you. This little poem shows you mustn't quit For it won't get you any place a little bit. So don't give up when the pace seems slow You may succeed with just a smile and a glow. TO WARREN HIGH SCHOOL Dear Alma Mater, now we raise To thee a grateful song of praise For kindest care, for truth we've sought To gleam from lessons wisely taught, From school book's gathered store. Our thanks for high ideals we bring, We warriors now a paean sing, A song of what we hope to do, A challenge we send forth as true, Brave champions of our school. Margaret Weare '59 TAKE IT FROM ME My sister goes to college And studies with her books. My brother loves the forests And fishes in its brooks. My mother stays at home And cares for us each day. My father works very hard And gives mamma his pay. I never work at all While they're workin' diligently And we have gathered what we've sown, l'm having a regular ball. Then will we heap upon thy shrine, The honors that we know are thine, A glory all thine own. At last when we are older grown I think quite often of their plight And hope that when they're done They can take a hint from me Roger LaCoste '59 And have a little fun. Evelyn Shepherd '59 IF lf a youth starts driving wild, I-le'11 surely prove he's just a child. If he takes his corners fast, One of those corners will be his last. If he guns it at the lights, And is blind to others' rights, Some fine day he'll even that score, And the wild young man will be no more. So if you're sure you want to race, Then it's the stars you'l1 surely chase. For my friend, the road will end, When you clock 100 in too tight a bend. D. Award '59 OUR 49th STAR Alaska is our brand new state, We've now forty-nine, not forty-eight. lt's called the land of the midnight sun, With snow piled high, ton upon ton. The pelican and the polar bear, All sorts of animals are found up there. The houses are made of snow and ice, All the scenery is so very nice. Alaska at last is one of us, After countless years of toil and fuss. Her land is so vast, the largest by far. We welcome her now, our forty-ninth star V. whitney '59 A QUESTION OF ROMANCE Many questions are asked each day Enough to send you into a trance, But the most common one you hear in June or May is A Question of Romance You think of the day when wedding bells will rin And on her finger she'll wear a golden band. Yet, in your heart there still lingers, A Question of Romance Three years have past since her day of joy, You now have two grandchildren, One a girl and the other a boy, And as around your chair they dance You know there is no longer A Question of Romance Beverly McKean '59 MY FUTURE There are times when I sit by my window wonderin what my future will be, I think of the years yet to come And wonder what lies there for me. I dream of becoming quite famous With great wealth and excitement galore, But then I come back to the present, And wonder what's really in store. It all seems so dark and mysterious, The unknown is really a good term, And when I begin to get serious, I worry and then start to squirm. So here as I sit by my window, Allowing my good thoughts to stray, l'll let tomorrow take care of tomorrow, And have a h--- of a good time today! Carole Oschwald ' 61 8 THE FIRST SNOWFALL Dreary skies spiritless and bleak, Strong winds that sting the cheek, Icy weather that chills the bones, Frozen earth that feels like stone. A crystal flake floats gently down Then myriads follow all around. Soon the town is clothed in white, The first snow fall is in sight. Dorothy Hrapek '59 FRICTION Friction, like many people, may be called two-facedg it can be a machine's best friend, or its greatest enemy. Although it is a cause of waste in all machines, it is put to good use in many instances. In unprotected machines, friction causes pitting and erosion on the surface which come in contact with each other. Also, heat is produced which may cause disastrous results. Bearings and lubricants minimize these corosive actions. Screws and screw type-machines take advantage of friction: the resultant forces of friction of two inclines planes against each other cause one to move, thereby doing the work for which it was designed. Gordon Granger ' 61 MY PREFERENCE I would rather be a Wave than a Wac for various reasons. Why, to begin with, even the name itself is so different from the harsh spoken, hard sounding Wac title, to the soft spoken, gentle sounding Wave title. It suggest to me a graceful quietness about it and it certainly is more becoming to be called a Wave than a Wac. Another thing I ad- mire about the Waves are their uniforms. They seem to have done away with that drab. ordinary look of regulation uniforms and have smartly styled them to blend in with the gay, more feminine taste in clothing. As far as actual benefits are concerned, I don't really know too much about them. I suppose both the Waves and Wacs have pretty much the same to offer in that field, But this I do know, that I'd rather wear the smart blue of the Waves than the depressing grey of the Wacs - - any day. C arole Oschwald ' 61 A PROFESSION AND A JOB A profession differs from a job in many respects. A profession is a job in which a person is an expert in one certain field. In a profession one must be skilled in one thing, and usually has a certificate, degree or other authorization stating that he is an expert in that certain field. Professions hold many different characteristics, including, the re- quirement of training and the requirement of more time to be spent on developing the profession: whereas, a job can be obtained without any experience or much training or skill. For many jobs no training or skill of any kind is required. A job can be obtained more easily than a profession, but usually does not prove as useful or promising. In a job one does not have to be an expert in any certain field, in fact, he sometimes does not even have to know a thing about the line of work into which he is entering. In other words, to have a profession is to be an expert in one certain line of work, and to have a job is any line of work into which one may enter without training, skill or any other type of experience.
