January 20, 1981 was the day 52 American hostages were released from Iran after 444 days in captivity. It was a day Americans will remember. Warren residents were especially interested in one hostage, Col. Leland Holland, who is from nearby Scales Mound, IL and has many relatives in the Warren area, including sev- en WJSHS students. Col. Holland gave a speech at the WJSHS gym Feb. 16, 1981. After the speech students asked questions until the close of school at 3:16 p.m. On January 20, the 40th President of the United States was inaugurated. Ronald Reagan, a former movie actor, at the age of 69 became the oldest man to become President. George Bush was sworn in as Vice-President. March 30, 1981, President Reagan sur- vived an assasination attempt. The bullet entered his left side and punctured the left lung. The following day he was making de- cisions again. Three others were injured— the press secretary, a Secret Service man, and a Washington policeman. December 8, 1980, former Beatle John Lennon was murdered by an admirer. The Beatles influenced the music, hair styles, and attire through the 60's until their break-up in 1970. 1980-81 HAPPENINGS 4 National Issues

REAGAN WINS SCHOOL ELECTION A mock election was held by the Social Problems class in the fall of '80. Students voted for the President, Representatives, and Senators. At a student assembly, three Social Problem students voiced their opinions concerning the three major candi- dates. Students voted on Nov. 4 which was the national election day. Reagan won by a landslide with Anderson following. On Feb. 16, students listened to Colonel Leland Holland, a former hostage in Iran. He told of his experiences during captivity and answered questions from the students and faculty. Because of the lack of student partici- pation, the annual Homecoming Parade became an uncertainty. After careful thought, it was decided to have one al- though next year was unsure. Students and faculty were plagued with vandalism as calculators, a tape recorder, tennis shoes, baseballs and a leather coat were found missing on March 27. The Jo Daviess Sheriff's Department investigated the break-in. Boys from all four classes became in- volved in the baseball program which was offered for the first time in many years at Warren High. 6 Student Life
