January 20, 1981 was the day 52 American hostages were released from Iran after 444 days in captivity. It was a day Americans will remember. Warren residents were especially interested in one hostage, Col. Leland Holland, who is from nearby Scales Mound, IL and has many relatives in the Warren area, including sev- en WJSHS students. Col. Holland gave a speech at the WJSHS gym Feb. 16, 1981. After the speech students asked questions until the close of school at 3:16 p.m. On January 20, the 40th President of the United States was inaugurated. Ronald Reagan, a former movie actor, at the age of 69 became the oldest man to become President. George Bush was sworn in as Vice-President. March 30, 1981, President Reagan sur- vived an assasination attempt. The bullet entered his left side and punctured the left lung. The following day he was making de- cisions again. Three others were injured— the press secretary, a Secret Service man, and a Washington policeman. December 8, 1980, former Beatle John Lennon was murdered by an admirer.
