JUNIOR HIGH MOVES to WARREN High school life was slightly different this year for both the students and school staff. Junior high students entered the high school building, taking over most of third floor and moving many of the classes. Locker assignments were changed and halls became more crowded. Three lunch periods were set up. Some teachers taught both junior and senior high stu- dents and others had to switch room as- signments. Cooks and janitors had more work to do. On March 13 when students heard about a recommendation that administra- tion was making to the school board, they walked out of school refusing to go to their sixth hour classes. The recommenda- tion was that Mr. Benter, a teacher and coach, not be rehired. Ninety-two detentions were given as a result. Over 700 Warren residents signed a petition for his rehiring, and over 150 Apple River residents signed one also. The school board voted four to three not to rehire him. state-bound WARRIORS 2 School Issues

January 20, 1981 was the day 52 American hostages were released from Iran after 444 days in captivity. It was a day Americans will remember. Warren residents were especially interested in one hostage, Col. Leland Holland, who is from nearby Scales Mound, IL and has many relatives in the Warren area, including sev- en WJSHS students. Col. Holland gave a speech at the WJSHS gym Feb. 16, 1981. After the speech students asked questions until the close of school at 3:16 p.m. On January 20, the 40th President of the United States was inaugurated. March 30, 1981, President Reagan sur- vived an assasination attempt. The bullet entered his left side and punctured the left lung. The following day he was making de- cisions again. Three others were injured— the press secretary, a Secret Service man, and a Washington policeman. December 8, 1980, former Beatle John Lennon was murdered by an admirer.
