Communicating is the beginning of understanding. With new students, incoming freshmen, three new teachers, and a new principal, there was a great need to reach out and search for that goal. There's always a need to reach out and find a goal to be better—the never-ending art of striving to be better. Girls' volleyball--new to Warren High School--gave the girls a feeling of competitiveness, something we will continue to feel in future years. Mr. Neilson and the varsity basketball players had to reach out to each other in order for them to gain a successful record for the year. Mr. Nielsen showed WHS his willingness to try to reach out by organizing a pep club for basketball---another first at WHS. 4 Touch Somebody New exam schedules were put into effect to benefit both students and teachers. This was one way Mr. Knautz showed his cooperation and concern for the well-being of Warren High School. Student Council and the School Board together made it possible to once again have open dances which are ben- eficial to the students' recreational needs. Freshmen and sophomores are reaching out to the jun- iors and seniors for guidance. In a sense though, the juniors and seniors are reaching out to the world. In any case, the world must prepare itself for youth-- not just for students of Warren High School, but the youth of the world. Better communication among countries could mean a beginning of understanding and pehraps a hope for world peace. FRONT ROW: Miss Anderson, Miss Bieser, L. Butler, B. Phillips, S. Lancaster, D. Two teams comprising ten on the A team and twelve on the B team competed in seven matches with both teams' records ending in a 4-3 reading. Coaches were Miss Bieser, Miss Henrichs, Miss Anderson, and Miss Klaus. Great Going, girls! 6 FRONT ROW: J. Vondra, J. Meyer, S. Blair, B. Parker, S. Coad, T. Blackboum, C. DeMar, L. Story, V. Pep Club Searches For Warrior Spirit The spirit at Warren High School was not good enough to meet Mr. Neilson's standards when he came here this year, and so he organized a Pep Club. The members were all willing to give time and effort to make their club a success. Students in the club were expected to attend games, cheer, and help organize activities. Pep Club activities in- cluded selling Warrior Buttons and white and orange pom pons. Profits were used to repaint the mats at both ends of the gym. Officers were Ginnie Martin, President; Susan Coad, Vice President; and Jane Vondra, Secretary-Treasurer. A representative was also chosen from each class. Mr. Mike Smith assisted Mr. Neilson in advising the club. The main goal of the club was to promote spirit and enthusiasm, and its members were really on the ball. 7 Vocational Center Adds Child Care The Jo Daviess-Carroll Area Voca- tional Center at Elizabeth, began its second year of operation with forty Warren students attending. Three of these students were in the second block, attending class from ten-thirty to twelve-thirty, with the rest of the third block from one to three o'clock. Child Care was added to the curri- culum this year. This class includes a nursery school held at the center. VICA, Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, was started this year. Warren has two officers in this club. Vicki Stiefel is Secretary and Sharon Reynolds is Treasurer. This club promotes vocational interest in students. One of their many projects was a cake raffle during National Education and VICA Week. 8 Co-op Promotes Career Planning The Co-op Club, in the second year of existence, is continuing its efforts to promote occupational awareness in our school and provide a forum for the integration of school and community affairs. It also promotes career planning and a business-like attitude among students. It attempts to foster community awareness of youth ability and promote the dignity of work. Officers for this year are Mike Mahoney, President; Lynnsey Bour- quin, Vice President; Martha Mitchell, Secretary; and Tim Krupke, Treasurer. The club is advised by Mr. Brazel- ton. FRONT ROW: P. On September 29th and 30th, all of Warren turned into a huge pumpkin patch with all kinds of activities including a speech by our state senator, John B. Roe; the crowning of the queen, Kelly Marsden; contests of all sorts, rides, and concessions. Other candidates for queen were Debra Long, Denise Bussman, Kelly Pepper, Heidi Krupke, and Jan Trevethan. Some school organizations had money-making booths, and the Community Unit 205 teachers launched a scholarship fund. 11 12 ACTIVITY 13 Congratulations, Students The scholarship, leadership, out- standing athletics, and service work work of Warren High students does not go unnoticed. The Twelfth An- nual Awards and Recognitions pro- gram was held April 25, 1973, in the gymnasium. The National John Phillips Sousa Award was presented to Janis Siga- fus for outstanding work in the WHS Band. The D.A.R. Award went to Julene Blair for citizenship. This night is one way the faculty reaches out to say thank-you to those students who help create a good image for Warren High School and the community. 14 15 K. Feltmeyer, J. Appell, R. Thompson, E. Schubert, L. Bourquin, K. Pansing, M. Appell, D. Palm, M. Davis, H. Feltmeyer, C. Stump, V. Vondra, D. Chumbler, J. Blair, M. Thommen, K. Menzemer. Juniors Present Knights In White Satin Celestial Fillet, Twilight Sky, Satellites, Dreamboat Adrift, and Moonlight Sonatas were the items on the menu that began the 1973 Junior-Senior Prom. The banquet began as the traditional toasts were said--Junior Class President, Sheri Lancaster, toasting the Seniors and Senior Class President, Bill Wiley, toasting the Juniors. Sophomore girls served the feast, and a group of Junior girls completed the ban- quet by singing the theme song-- For All We Know. Many hours before the banquet be- gan, the Juniors were hard at work transforming the gym into a setting of white satin with two large stair- ways descending from the glitter- ing sky of stars. At the enchanting hour of 10 p.m. Mary Jo Davis was crowned 1973 Prom Queen by outgoing King Mark Appell. Dana Palm was crowned King by the outgoing Queen Holly Feltmeyer. Mary and Dana led the Grand March--their royalty following. 17 “Homecoming 73” Begins In A Castle And Ends With A Sit-In 1973 Homecoming activities started out with the snake dance Thursday evening, October 11th, at Meridian Park. A bonfire and the cheerleaders magnified the student body's enthusiasm. The highlight of the Homecoming activities was Friday afternoon in the gym when this year's Home- coming Queen, Becky Thompson, was crowned by King Jeff Blair. Her court consisted of four other senior girls—Cheryl Baumgartner, Patti Krusiec, Anita Pepper, and Carolyn Schmitt—escorted by Lyle Tucker, Marty McKee, Corky Pansing, and Mike Mahoney. This year there was a Court of Roses consisting of two girls from each class: Susan Coad and Betty Park- er, seniors; Patrice Mahoney and Kelly Pepper, juniors; Susan Pet- sche and Jan Trevethan, sopho- mores; Martha Blair and Jan Schu- bert, freshmen. They were escort- ed by eight W-Club members. Following the crowning at 3:30 p.m., the annual parade took place in downtown Warren with the juniors taking first place with their float, Beat the Beavers. The Warriors were ousted from a Homecoming victory as the Lanark Beavers led the way with the final score 34-12 at the Friday evening game. Saturday evening's annual Home- coming dance had the largest turnout in years. Unfortunately it turned into a sit-in with Johnny Mathis records because the band didn't show up until 10:30 p.m. Truly Homecoming 1973 was very different. 18 Juniors place first for third time HOMECOMING COURT: L. Thoughts such as these are sure to be in the minds of the members of the Echoes staff as another dead- line nears. Long before school begins in the fall, yearbook editors and staff members are already meeting-- choosing a theme, organizing the staff, and making plans for the best yearbook ever. Jiliane Groom, Editor in-Chief, and Mrs. Danielson along with the loyal staff members work many long hours after school. Deadlines always create problems. However, they have always been met. A great deal of effort and time plus loyal help add up to one great Echoes. J. Groom, Editor; Mrs. Danielson, Advisor; J. Meyer, Managing Editor. Each fall band members practice marching for football halftime shows and also march in parades in other towns. This year they attended Shullsburg and Lanark's homecoming parades. Our homecoming show, Windy City Dialogue, was very successful. After football season it was all concert because the band sat down to work on Christmas and Spring Concerts. In the late fall Mr. Oc- chipinti organized a stage band which practiced at 7:30 a.m. They hope to perform for the grade school and some basketball games. Selected members of the band at- tended the County Festival and many performed in the Solo and Ensemble Contest. On Memorial Day the band once again became a marching band, performing for the annual cere- monies in Apple River. President and Student Director was Donna Chumbler; Joan Winter, Vice President; Janet Winter, Sec- retary; and Ron Mathisen, Trea- surer; Jiliane Groom and Donna Chumbler, Librarians. 24 Band Reaches Out With Music 25 FRONT ROW: S. Cole Kick those feet up higher and smile at the audience, chimes Miss Klaus, Pom Pon advisor, in time with the peppy music used for the routine. Twenty-four girls were involved in this year's WHS Pom Pon squad. Diligent practice and much coop- eration from the girls made the Pom Pon squad what it was this year—delightful! Each home basketball games was also the time for a new routine which was originated and learned by the girls. Orange sweaters with white dickeys and black pleated skirts were cho- sen by the girls for new uniforms. 26 Enthusiasm is a word not often used to depict a chorus, but it describes the Warren High School Chorus quite well. Each and every member is enthusiastic. This is shown by many who give up their lunch hours to attend chorus practice and who also put in many hours at after school and evening rehearsals. Their per- formances radiate their energy. To Miss Henrich's delight, twice as many boys joined Chorus this year in comparison to last year, adding up to a thirty-eight member total. The Chorus set many goals for itself this year--most impor- tantly to get their own chorus hour during class schedules for next year. They performed whenever given the opportunity--including a program at Open House, a joint program with Stockton Jazz Band at Sinsinawa, and many other in addi- tion to their regular Christmas and Spring Concerts. Plans were made also for a musical. Music is very important to these students at WHS, and enough cred- it cannot be given to Miss Henrichs for the enthusiasm she is able to present through her Chorus. We Believe In Music Stage Band Has Something Extra—Style The Stage Band is a performing instrumental ensemble established for those students who have an interest in the jazz idiom of music. This music is different than concert music because it is played in a different way. They interpret the music in their own style. This year WHS Stage Band consisted of four alto saxaphones, two tenor saxaphones, one bari saxaphone, three trombones, four trumpets, a drum set and a piano. Mr. Occhi- pinti, the director, focused mostly on the popular jazz-rock sound in- cluding such songs as Saturday In The Park and Carp enters Now and Then . The band provided half- time entertainment at one basket- ball game and also palnned concerts for Nora and Apple River School. Their rehearsels were held at seven- thirty on school mornings, in add- ition to sectional practices. As the band was just organized in December, their plans for next year include many more performances. FRONT ROW: S. Hoffman, M. Buske, J. Meyer, J. Groom, K. Robbins, M. Ernst, B. Scheele. Warrior World is published once every two weeks. In December, the staff published a special twelve page issue with hand coloring. With Mr. Hatfield's sound advice, the articles are always in good taste and written with an unbiased view. The main goal of the news- paper staff is to become a better organization. FRONT ROW: J. FT A Visits ISU FTA, with its small membership of thirteen, elected Patti Krusiee, President; Karen Feltmeyer, Vice President; Vicki Stiefel, Secretary; and Joan Winter, Treasurer. The annual FTA trip was taken to ISU in November. They took a tour of the campus and had a chance to sit in on classes or roam around. Regular meetings were held through- out the year during activity period. A number of the members partic- ipated in the teacher assistant pro- gram in the grade school. In March the senior members will have a chance to try their hand at student teaching in the grade level and subject area of their choice. Mrs. Harter is the faithful advisor. OFFICERS: J. Winter, P. Krusiee, Mrs. Harter, V. Stiefel, K. Felt- meyer. 31 NHS Gives Credit Where Credit Is Due The National Honor Society is designed for the purpose of giving credit where credit is due. NHS honors those juniors and seniors who show good citizenship, good character, and possess good lead- ership qualities. To be eligible, a student must have maintained a 3. 2 grade average throughout his high school career. Members are elected to the organization by a two-thirds majority vote from the faculty. Mr. Ramaker is the advisor of the NHS. It's just another way to reach out and show recognition where it is deserved. Mr. Ramaker, J. Winter, B. Thompson, L. Bourquin, S. Lancaster, J. Appell. 32 ✓ Student Council Aids Administration JUNIORS J. Meyer, D. Bussman, L. Tucker, K. Bonjour. Student Council's planning for homecoming this year was great with Homecoming '73 selected as the theme. Though the band didn't show--all else went well. Thanks to the Student Council, open dances are once again held at WHS----which are faring well. A new water bubbler in the back gym lobby and a dance in the spring with proceeds going to the Echoes Yearbook fund were two more of this year's projects. And let's not forget the faithful money- making pop machine. The Student Council of Warren High School is here to reach out to the students and to the admin- istration to bring about closer ties with each other. Mr. D. Smith and Mr. Bohnsack are this year's advisors. OFFICERS Mr. Bohnsack; L. Tucker, Treasurer; B. Thomp- son, President; P. Krusiec, Sec retary; V. Vondra, Vice Pres- ident; Mr. D. Smith. New Advisor Assists Student Librarians Librarians at WHS are always there----- waiting for fellow students to reach out to them for help in finding that certain book or magazine. Jobs of the student librarians are to keep cards in order, to keep the books and magazines straight, and, of course, to check out books and magazines. For each day a librarian works, she earns a point. When a librarian has earned one hundred points, she receives a pin. This year's officers are Connie Stump, President; Patrice Mahoney, Vice President; and Ginnie Martin, Secretary-Treasurer. Mrs. Blair served as advisor for the librarians. 37 FHA Builds For The Future The start of a new year means a new money-making project for the FHA. This year we held cake raf- fles at home basketball games which gave the community a chance to support our organization. Other activities such as the UNICEF program, the Mother Daughter Banquet, and the sum- mer trip fulfilled a purpose as well as being fun. The Warren Chapter was proud to have Donna Chumbler serve as Treasurer of Secion 2A, which is made up of six counties. FHA is also a state and national organization. Mrs. Chumbler and Mrs. Edler served as Chapter Mother and Chapter Grandmother respectively. Mrs. Balbach assisted us in being the builders of homes--homes of America's future. FRONT ROW: C. Four of these were triangular meets in which Warren placed second in two of them. The other meet was with Galena. Although the 0-5 record doesn't sound too impressive, the Warriors' efforts were wholehearted as Warren finished fourth in the count - ty meet. This year's lettermen included one freshman--Paul Meyer, one soph- omore-----Lyle Tucker, one junior --Jerry Edler, and two seniors— Dan Kaiser and Bill Wiley. 52 53 54 CLASSES 55 7 f Seniors Reach Out To The Future Looking back on the last four years as students of Warren High School, we seniors have many memories. Our freshman year gave each of us time to explore all the opportuni- ties that high school has to offer. We elected Kirk Pansing as Presi- dent. Our first Homecoming float contained the hopefully victorious message: Warriors be nimble, Warriors be quick, Warriors jump over the Bulldogs' tricks. A teen dance was our only money-making project of the year. Mr. Gast and Mr. Laumann took on the full-time responsibilities of being class advisors. As sophomores, getting involved was the main goal throughout the year. Vernon Vondra, President, led us in choosing our float theme, Spread the Pirates. A dance and the selection of class rings high- lighted the year. At the beginning of our junior year, everyone enjoyed the thrill of being an upperclassman. But as the year progressed, more and more responsibilities came our way. President Sheri Lancaster helped us in making the final .choice of our class flower, motto, and colors. Class rings made their welcomed arrival in early Septem- ber. A float which read, Blast the Bulldogs Back to USSR was our class entry in the Homecoming parade. Our record-breaking mag- azine sales campaign totaled $4,481. 64. The huge profit made from our dance was soon depleted on prom night. Nights in White Satin, honoring the seniors, was truly a night to be remembered. Looking forward to graduation, we realize that everything we do will be for the last time. Jeff Blair had the honor of being our last class President. Our last float theme was The Morning After. Senior breakfast and graduation will unify the Class of 1974 for the last time. Four years of living and learning will be symbolized for each of us by a single diploma. Now with graduation, we have reached our goal. We reach out— out to the future. 56 The Class Flower Is The White Rose KATHY ALLVIN JAMES APPELL THOMAS BALBAC SUSAN BALBACH CHERYL BAUMGARTNER 57 CYNTHIA BLACKBOURN JEFFREY BLAIR Seniors Choose “It’s Not KELLY BLAIR SHERRILL BLAIR KATHLEEN BOELK KENNETH BRINKMEIER CHRISTINE BROGE FRANZ BROGER I 58 How Long You Live, But How” LINDA BUTLER DONNA CHUMBLER SUSAN COAD MARY JO DAVIS STEVEN DAWSON COLLEEN DEYO GARY DOERSAM JERRY EDLER KAREN FELTMEYER i Janet Winter And Joan Winter Are JAMES FRANCIS JIUANE GROOM HELEN HAMMER Illinois State Scholars TIMOTHY KRUPKE PATRICIA KRUSIEC SHERI LANCASTER DEBRA LONG MARSHALL McKEE MICHAEL MAHONEY JULIE MANTSKE 61 Beckie Thompson Wins KEVIN MARSDEN VIRGINIA MARTIN RONALD MATHISEN KEVIN MENZEMER MARTHA MITCHELL CAROL MYERS DORIS NIEMAN 62 DAR Good Citizen Award DANA PALM KIRK PANSING BETTY PARKER I Wine And White LAURA ROLANDO CAROLYN S CRM ITT EUGENE SCHUBERT Are The Class Colors Keith Ford « There comes a time for all of us When we must say good-bye, But Faith and Hope and Love and Trust, Can never, never die. Junior rings came late in August. The style was chosen by majority vote, but each student chose his own stone. In September, they got their first real taste of being upperclassmen. They elected Joanne Trost as Pres- ident; Judy Meyer, Vice President; Deanna Edler, Secretary; and Ja- neen Hintz, Treasurer. They once again sponsored a Jel- lo-throw at the Pumpkin Festival. The class was thrilled at Home- coming by the announcement that for the third time the Class of '75 had won first place for their float. Members of the Homecoming Court of Roses were Kelly Pepper and Patrice Mahoney. In November, they chose their class motto, colors, and flower. May 4th was the date set for their Prom with hopes of having it at Chestnut Mountain. The juniors were very busy this year with the promise of being ev- en busier as seniors. Pres. J. Trost V.P. J. We are faced with pollution of every- thing around us, and at the same time we are faced with a severe shortage of energy. Many of the resources we have enjoyed and taken for granted are being ruined by thoughtlessness and carelessness by us all. The energy in the form of fuel, gas, and electricity ap- pear to be insufficient for the in- creasing demand of our society. Shortages in our land of plenty are evident in food and all types of materials. This is the type of world you will be facing as you graduate from high school. The re- sponsibility of helping solve these problems will rest on your shoulders in the years ahead. We sincerely believe that the greatest resource available in our society is the youth of today. The youth of today will be the leaders of tomorrow. It has been our goal and our hope that the education and training provided for you in Community Unit District No. 205 over the years will make it possible for each one of you in your own way to participate in the solving of these and other problems of society in the future. If each of you will do your best and develop pride in everything you do, we are confi- dent that you will succeed in solv- ing the problems of our society and will continue to make this great free country of ours a better place to live and work. From The Desks Of Our Administrators Aldous Huxley once wrote that the rung of a ladder was never meant to rest upon, but to hold a man's foot while he climbed somewhat higher. We must continue to seek maximum academic, physical, so- cial and cultural development; for ourselves and our school. To ac- complish these goals collectively we must learn to stand on our own feet and be responsible for our own successes and failures. But before you can stand on your own feet you must recognize that you need more than just the desire to stand up. You need to know enough to keep your balance. This is why our society provides school for young people and why so many older people keep on learn- ing. In this changing world it is not enough to have in your head noth- ing more than there was there yesterday. Yet no person stands so alone that he is soverign and is not affected by the world around him. Indepen- dence must walk hand in hand with knowledge, obedience to the laws of the school-community, and loyalty to our customs and traditions. The advice given years ago was, Be Yourself and is today trans- lated, Do Your Own Thing. What you have that is particular to yourself is the feature to develop and mature. If you find math or English difficult, do not figure that all runners break the four min- ute mile. The thing to do is to find your best quality and bring it to maturity. Climb rungs! Don't rest! MR.
