Many days come and go and before the student realizes it, he discovers that he is a Senior and about to leave the ivy covered walls forever. From these walls have passed many such seniors, and many more will follow. The clock of time ticks steadily onward and our life advances with it. But perhaps we can do the impossible and turn back the hands of time to recreate some of those very special moments in our life that we’ll remember forever. John Rowe Secretary-Treasurer OjjiCG lS MOOV The class of 1941 began a tradition that has lasted through the years at Warren High School, the editing of an annual. The years have rolled by and many changes have come about; from the jitterbug to the twist, but the value of an annual will never change. Maybe the style and the monetary value of an annual changes, but its value doesn't lie in its cost, it is found in the hearts of those people who fill its pages and is valued by the many happy memories it brings to mind. In our yearbook, in a few instances, we have turned back the hands of time in hope that we may bring back some happy memories, not only to the members of the class of 1941, but to anyone who opens this yearbook. To the class of 1941 we want to say Thanks for starting a tradition which has made it possi- ble for us to save a few of those very precious moments in our lives. (L. to R.) Ron Hawes - -Vice President, Anita Leibert--Treasurer, William Doubler--President, Vickie Lange-- Secretary. Without these two our school would fail to operate. There are many jokes told about these two and their sway-backed broom handles, but many fail to think what operations would not happen if they were not around. Thanks Leonard and Joe for your faithful service. Although counseling isn't one of his stated duties, he does much of it, and he influences many students to strive for higher goals. We thank you, Mr. Tucker, for more than we can express. Margret Sargent--Secretary Dog may be man's best friend, but to the students at Warren High Mrs. Sargent is a better friend any day. If you can't find the answer to some problem concerning anything to do with school, ask Margaret and she'll know the answer 99.9% of the time. Besides all the work she does for the student body, she is also Mr. Tucker’s able-bodied assistant. In Oc- tober work was begun on the Senior Class play, which with hard work of the cast and director, was a huge success. All the money that the class of '62 has been making in their school years is going toward the trip to New York City in the last part of March. To help make this money, a bake sale is planned in the future. JUNIORS Much of the time during the first two years in high school is spent in anxiety for the Junior year. When it arrives there isn't much time to be lost. Many plans must be made at early dates, and much time is given over to preparation for the prom and play. As the years pass by this year will be remembered as one of the very special ones in our life. SOPHOMORES Ambitious would be the best descrip- tion of the Sophomore class. Their Home- coming float took first prize. The treas- urer has been busy totaling the profits from bake sales, candy sales, and selling re- freshments at games. Mr. Pumper has guided this group in the right direction. FRESHMEN Future success looks like the prophecy for this class. New surroundings haven't hindered them in paving their way through their first year at Warren High School. Mr. Weibers has helped them to get adjusted to a more advanced schedule with the one- classroom school days behind them. A suc- cessful bake sale was their first project. Hazardous weather prevented them from having a dance after the Dakota basketball game, but that will be scheduled before the year ends. 26 I Kti om L Pliotogiapluj 28 Qtu Ltodb Couw£ill (STANDING, L. to R.): D. Other than the three members elected from each class every year, the council has retained some of the older members. These members are faced with the responsibility to help the new members under- stand and help with the function of the club. The largest function of the club is to take the responsibility of Homecoming. They organize the parade, decorate the field and gym, select the orchestra, and take charge of the election and crowning of the queen. Throughout the basketball and football seasons, they are in charge of the concession stand. At the end of the year a picnic is sponsored by the council. This year banners are being ex- changed between schools to be hung in the gym. The school news- paper that was organized last year is in full swing this year compiling news of the students in every phase of activity. The council's aim is to bring closer the students of each class so they will work together as one. 29 FWA (FIRST ROW): R. Dettwiler, L. VanDeMark, M. Wil- liams, C. Kittoe, and C. Cox. The chapter started off the season with a picnic with the F.H.A. girls at the Canyon. Upon entering school the chapter took a trip to Madison where they visited Oscar Mayer Company and the campus of the University of Wisconsin. The chapter's steam cleaner has brought in some extra money this year. Also Christmas card sales brought in around $200. The selling of tractor seat cushions is planned for 1962. An even larger number of members attended the County F.T.A. meeting in the spring. The club selected Kay Stump to attend the F.T.A. Work Shop at Morrison. An important part of each month's F.T.A. meeting is a report of discussion of various interesting subjects concerning teaching. Newspaper staff There has long been a need in our school for a newspaper. This year, for the first time this need has been met. Linda Boelk, editor of the newspaper, has exploited the talents of many a would-be reporter. Her trained staff of reporters has’ kept an eagle eye out for all news worthy items and with their combined efforts have produced a newspaper our school can be proud of. 33 G.A.A G.A.A. The Warren chapter of the Girls' Athletic Association is an energetic and enthusastic group. This year they have changed the meeting time to Tuesdays after school for one hour instead of playing at noon for forty minutes. The first eight weeks were spent by going bowling at Lena. The members showed a lot of interest in this sport. The rest of the year they played a variety of sports in the gym. Whatever game it was they worked hard at it and tried their best to attend as many meetings as possible. The G.A.A. sponsored the Sadie Hawkins dance again this year. Linda Boelk was crowned Daisy Mae and Bill Doubler was Li'l Abner. The money earned in G.A.A. is used to send two Junior members to G.A.A. camp at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. At camp the girls learn new money making projects and ways to improve their clubs. (S . a a STANDING from left to right: D. Newman, J. Carpenter, L. DeMuth, D. Russell, Mrs. Bourquin. KNEELING: S. The money earned is used to purchase sterling silver pins for each girl who has completed a minumum of 150 hours of library work. Our school year's end will be set off by a picnic for library staff members. 37 BAND The spirit of the community is in its young people, and the High School band represents a large part of it. Membership in this organization has risen to 72 this year, and each year it steadily increases. During the summer and fall many engagements were made to march in parades. This year they march in Lena, Hanover and Shullsburg. The Northwest Division of the Illinois Teachers' Association invited the group to present a concert at their fall meeting in Rock- ford. A concert of festive music was played at Christmas time. Forty-five students participated in the solo and ensemble contest, which was held in Freeport. A number of students, and the band were participants in the state music contest, held at Western University. The director, Mrs. Geach, had many difficulties and problems to contend with, but she always got a solution to her problems. Sometimes it meant that the members had to do some special practicing. Student directors this year were Marjorie Burmeister, and Susan Sincox. They led the Pep Band at basketball games, and assisted Mrs. Geach. One of the projects of the officers is to devise a merit plan, not yet fully completed. The officers are: President--Lorna Beall, Vice-President--Roy Prange, Secretary-Treasurer - - Corrine Ingram, and reporter --Glenda Broege. Forty-five students from Warren High School will compete at Freeport in district music contest, Saturday, February 24. Hours are spent in deep concentration, learning and memo- rizine solos, ducts, and trios. , . . . These students vie with many others in their classification (determined by population of student body), from other schools. Medals are awarded to those who receive a superior, blue medal, and an excellent, red medal. (L. to R.) T. Schirmer, K. Vance, A. Hurst, T. Watson, L. Aurand, L. Scace, D. This year the club made arrangements to be affiliated with the state organization. Next year the plans should be completed. The annual Sweet- heart Hop was a success. Marcia Paulsen was crowned sweetheart of the club by the president, John Darnill, during the hop. Apple River Canyon was the scene of the spring picnic. P. C. A. (SEATED, L. to R.): K. Busch, J. The Warriors completed an almost perfect season, losing only one to Stockton 6-0 in the closing seconds. One of the highlights of the season was Ron Hawes kicking a field goal, the first in the history of the conference. The true picture of a team was shown by the Warriors in the title game. During the game the Warriors could not be held back. They out-classed the Bulldogs of Durand all the way, scoring 37 points to Durand's 20. Lettermen for the season were Doubler, Leverton, Sullivan Balbach, Hawes, Holland, Breed, Geach, Heindel, Schultz, Kuhleman, Gille, Williams, Shere, Kaiser, Beall, and Prange. All conference selections were: Doubler and Kuhleman offensive and defensive team, and Geach offensive team. Those receiving special mention were Leverton, Heindel, Schultz, and Gille. Awards for the year went to Gille for the most tackles, Hawes and Sullivan for captains, and Doubler for most valuable player. -ootbctM Ttihutb Qtef lten£0 v CJuU f)iOt(£ VOASttjj (STANDING, L. to R.): T. In the game with Scales Mound the Warriors found their range. In a final splurge of scoring the Warriors finished the game with a score of 102-76. After losing out in both county tournaments the Warriors are looking to the new year for better results. Action J umjUh V6aS tty (STANDING, L. to R.): G. Rowe, S. Kant, T. Stocks, D. Winter, D. The scene of the 62 Junior Prom was the bottom of the deep blue sea and a pirates cave. The senior-junior banquet was prepared by the junior mothers and served by twelve native girls in muu-muus. The main course being meat of the jungle. The incoming queen, Linda Boelk, was crowned by outgoing king, Ken Williams. Jim Breed, the new king received his sceptor from outgoing queen, Nancy McFadden. The royal court and royal couple danced through the waves to the music of Gus Furhman and his orchestra. March Time Beautiful 52 A PERFECT DAY Celebration of the 1961 Homecoming officially began at 12:45, on October 14, with the parade. Bands from Shullsburg, Hanover, Galena and Warren participated. Enthusiasm of the crowd, and spirit of the band encouraged the Warren War- riors to a 28-0 victory over the Galena Pirates. A wonderful Homecoming isn't com- plete without a dance. At nine o'clock the gym was filling with people, dancing to the music of A1 Raymond and his orches- tra . Presentation of the king and queen and their royal court was the highlight of the evening. Linda Boelk was crowned queen by Bill Doubler, who reigned as king. Attending the queen were Lois DeMuth, Diane Russell, Janice Boelk, and Marcia Peterson, who were escorted by Vincent A. Holland, Ron Hawes, John Sul- livan, and Terry Leverton. 54 FIRST PRIZE, SOPHOMORES SECOND PRIZE, SENIORS WARREN CRUSHES GALENA 28-0 In the Warriors' annual Homecoming classic they showed their fine versatility on both offense and defense. The first half proved to be scoreless for the Galena Pirates, but the Warriors scored on a twenty yard field goal by Ron Hawes. During the second half the Warriors opened up on offense with scoring runs by Doubler, Sullivan and Hawes and an extra point by Hawes. The perfect afternoon was concluded with a rip-roaring pass interception which paved the way for an eighty-five yard touchdown by Senior end, Roger Kuhleman. Thus Warren's alumni saw their tra- ditional Homecoming victory upheld. THE PATH OF THE CONQUERERS HALFTIME PERFORMANCE ON THE FIELD OF BATTLE 55 The D Ict uj Puttik DIARY OF ANNE FRANK The Senior class tried to touch the human heart last year with the fantastic story of a teenage Jewish girl who was caught in the vice of the Nazi party of World War II. The Diary of'Anne Frank, began construction in the middle of March to be ready when the curtain went up April 21st and 22nd. Prior to the war, Otto Frank and his family lived in Germany. When the war broke out the Franks moved to the Netherlands where Otto Frank became a business partner of Mr. Van Dean. When Hitler issued one anti- Jewish decree after another the two families went into hiding in the warehouse of their business. The Diary tells of the love, the hate, and the growing up of a girl in the strange home that she occupied for more than two years. Her life was cut short when she died in one of the Death Camps. Otto Frank still lives and the memory of his brave daughter will live always in his heart. CAST Mr. Frank . . . Meip.......... Mrs. Van Daan Mr. Van Daan . Peter Van Daan Mrs. Frank . . . Carl Doss and his wife. The entire family except for the oldest boy, Donny, came from mixed ancestry. The play gets its plot from the love affair between Donny and a rich girl whose father doesn't like people whose skin is dark in color. In the end, all the trouble was worked out and the two families, along with the rest of the towns people became much closer. WILLIAM EATMAN Produce and International Trucks m Warren, Illinois HI V.
