Harding Senior High School has served the city of XYarren and its citizens in a most valuable capacity. During school hours our building has been con- sidered the center of eduction and learning in XVarren. After three o'clock it has been the focal point of our con1munity's sports, drama, club functions, and entertainment. XVarren has been growing rapidly and almost all of its schools are greatly over-crowded. Harding is no exception, 1700 students are being stuffed into a building which has a capacity of only 1200. For this reason, last November the citi7ens of XX'arren approved a five and one-half million dollar bond issue for school alterations and additions. Approxi- mately one million, seven hundred thousand dollars of this sum is to be used in improvement and mod- ernization of our school. XVithin a very few years the new Harding High will be a reality. Among the improvements will be new shops, science laboratories, music rooms, and an enlarged gymnasium. The Harding High School of the future with its greatly enlarged structure will be capable of serving our community even more that it ever has before. Many people from the community and from the school worked unceasingly with their hands to help make the new Harding possible. To these loyal workers, to whom we owe so very much, we dedi- cate the lfclzoes of 1954. The Lazy The Boosters Club Frolics went western in 1953 when the Lazy liar ll llaneh played hosl to some dudes from Harding. The stooges upset all the ranch hands with their antics. MacPherson, D. Baker, B. Trem- bath and S. Nlcrolla were well equipped to change ranch routine into a riot. The emeees, Larry llerman and james Bickel, helped the merriment along and all hands had an enjoyable time, as did the audience. All the singers, dancers, and actors took a real vaca- tion from their studies and got into the swing of things with popular songs and dances and a sprinkling of the classics. Teachers eouldn't object too much to the vacation because they got into the act also by giving their version of It'S in the Book. The whole Frolics cast turned to composing and came up with a new song with which they closed the program. Harding overpowered Canton McKinley 33-13, giving the Bulldogs a total of 8 yards rush- ing. Gantons touchdowns came on an 86-yard kickoff return near the end of the first half and on a 58-yard pass near the end of the game. Hilles scored three times for XVarren. He scored off tackle and around end during the first quarter and on a pass play in the second quarter. Sibera received a jump pass from Preston at the end of the first quarter and Preston threw from the three with four minutes gone in the second quarter. Venetta made 3 of the 5 one-pointers. An inspiring Cleveland Heights team gave the Panthers a tough time. XVarren was behind for most of the first half and had four drives bog down without hitting pay dirt. Blocking and running improved some and the Red and NVhite finished Heights, 21-12. The fourth battle was a 21-20 thriller at Mansfield. Venetta's booting of the three extra points was the deciding factor of the game. Harding was ahead after Rogers returned a kick 52 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter until the end of the game. The margin was increased in the third quarter when Giles romped 15 yards for the- score. The 14-0 margin was short lived for Mack returned the kickoff 89 yards for the marker. Rogers again scored from 17 yards out and Venetta kicked the deciding point of the game. In the fourth quarter Mansfield decreased the margin with a strong passing offense to 21-20. In the last 89 seconds they were on their way to another touchdown by passing, but Dowcll intercepted to stop the bid for victory and end- ing a real thriller. Coming home from the tight victory at Mansfield the Red and White had a decisive victory in beating Cleve- land East 45-0 at the Homecoming game. Hilles tasted pay dirt three times and Rogers twice. Preston and Giles each crossed the goal line once. Harding jolted Cleveland Benedictine, 34-13, for their sixth straight win of the year. This win put Harding in second place in the state championship race. Rogers made four touchdowns and Venetta made one behind good blocking to assure victory. In the championship game XVarren was defeated be- fore 21,000 spectators at Massillon by a score of 26-6. The score looks as though Massillon dominated the game, but that is far from the case. The Hamilton Big Blue handed Harding a 19-O upset at Hamilton in the coldest game of the year. There were frequent fumbles and poor block- ing throughout the contest. Several of the boys got hurt. The most serious was Hilles, who suffered a head injury and was taken to the hospital with a brain concussion. Biffle, named the best defensive lineman for the Panthers, was named on the Chick Harley team, second team offense in the A.P. poll and first team defense in the L'.l'. poll.
