Globey grabs his travelscarred suitcase and rushes out for a bird's-eye view of the world. He says it's smart to see America first, especially if it's Niagara Falls, one of the Seven Wonders. He skims the Alleghenies and Berkshires to arrive at picturesque Provincetown on Cape Cod. Sniffing the salt air, he is fascinated by the fisheries and the smacks docked alongside. He wishes he were one of the artists who flock there every summer. Going south, he hugs the coast line all the way. Enchanted by the Bok Singing Tower in Florida, he listens to the carillon pealing its evening so ng accompanied by twittering of birds in their sanctuary. Breaking the spell, he grabs a plane Qby priority, of coursej to cross the Deep South and plains bordering the Mississippi. Flying over a mesa in New Mexico, he dips low enough to spy two native Americans on horseback. Globey heads north into the Black Hills, stopping at Mt. Rushmore. He stands awed by this man-made tribute to fam- ous presidents. Springtime in the Rockies lures him to ldaho, where he catches the aroma of coffee. Yes, it's Harding campers who share hot dogs with him. Snow-capped Rainier, framed by majestic firs, beckons to Globey before he scoots across the Canadian border to gape pop-eyed at a totem pole in lasper National Park, a monument to Indian handcraft. Maybe l'll take up carving, he thinks. c'W5 M. F. MOLLENKOPP O. A. LOVETT Primfipf ll Assistant Prirucipcml The Big Eight hold frequent conferences to decide the policy of the Wdrren schools. He's never too busy with his problems of administration to give a Warm Welcome to former Hardingites on leave from service. The Voice of Mr. Lovett announces that the repre- sentative of Oberlin is in the office or that car F142Z is parked with the lights on. He not only makes frequent use of the P. A. system, but directs it as Well. Being Dean of Boys is a full-time job, too. Among his extra-curricular duties, he enjoys plan- ning assemblies, which range from magicians to philosophers. Good luck, says retiring prexy, Don Spencer, as he hands the gavel to his successor, lames Bollas, at Council headquarters. Both boys made note- worthy installation speeches. Spencer analyzed the G. I. Bill of Rights in its significance for furthering the education of returning service men. Bollas urged us not to allow our liberty to degenerate into license, but to guard it carefully for the good of all. In the crafts class, young artists develop such hobbies as model- ing airplanes and making trays and jewelry. The commercial art class provides the minute menu: they produce posters for numerous school activities. Pupils who like portrait Work enroll in oils in order to study the science of color and still-life. -Qi Page Eleven fit' Hic on parle las lengucxs barbarus are key- words to our foreign language courses. A survey of the field in general science opens the Way for future investigation. Those who are interested in Mother Nature can pull petals from daisies in botany class or dig into the good earth in their horticultural pur- suits. They can determine whether they have talents for medicine by operating on Zoological specimens in room 107 fpoor Globeyl. Everybody ought to take a course in physiology in order to know better how the human body functions. Chemistry experimenters learn first hand which chemicals will mix in a test tube and which will explode. The odors which float through the air from room 210 thoroughly fumigate the corridors. For those interested in the great natural laws behind our industrial World, there are classes in radio, electricity, and physics. Pre-in- duction requirements and industrial needs have made heavy demands on courses in applied sciences. He pur- sues his way along a barren coast to a village of grass huts wherehe comes across an American medical assistant who is busy winning the confidence of grandpa and the children. Globey finds the East a land where old meets new. Between street car tracks and a modern highway are parked a team of oxen and an automobile. In Iran ships of the desert get the green traffic light while he waits on the red. He tries riding a donkey and asks, How do you make the thing move? Globey visualizes his cup of lava as he sees native girls picking the coffee beans, When he espies natives compressing juice from sugar cane, he heads straight for an Indian candy shop. Candy is candy wherever you eat it, he says, munching sweets. On a hot summer day, he experiences the thrill of a Moslem holiday. ln Sumatra there are both beauty and strength, a native girl proves as she lightly balances a log on her head. Globey just can't resist the ultra-modern- istic theater in Hawaii-yes, Robert Taylor is billed. Trudgery implies the fatigue and frustration that begins early in her kitchen day and increases with every step until, at the end, she is too tired to do the things she really enjoys doing. Freedom from this trudgery would give her the extra hours and energy she needs for better and happier living.
