LOVETT, Dramatic Coach Weird, mysterious, horrible is the play presented by the June class of 1934. In the black days of the French Revolution, there was no more celebrated house for dark deeds existing than was the sinister inn, The Black Flamingof, Here those seeking lodging went to sleep, many never to Wake again, or, if they were of the lucky few, it was to find their treasure gone. The disappearance of Queen Nlarie Antionette's necklace is the subject of the play. Throughout the plot, we suspect one and then the other, not arriving at a con- clusion until near the end of the play. Strange Count Cagliostro, who at times takes command of the situation by his marvelous gift of mesmerism, intensifies the mystery. The aristocratic De Lussacs, and colorful Trigand add atmosphere to the plot of thievery and murder. The screeching sounds of an invisible violin have the audience on edge and ready to shriek. Humorous relief is furnished by silly Clotilde, the maid, who is carried away by the flattery of conceited Popo. Clotilde attempts to reach Popo's heart by roasting him a juicy pig, while Popo is trying to win the pig through Clotilde's heart. SPONSORS HND PRESIDENTS BOOSTER COUNCIL CF SPCNSCRS QND PRFISIDENTS This council of sponsors and presidents oflclasses and clubs was organized two years ago, when some step toward co-operation among the leaders of extra-curricular activities was felt to be greatly needed. Although it has no regular meetings, a meeting can be called at any time by O. A. Lovett, in charge of all extra-curricular activities, or by the Student Council President. The council has served the student body and has succeeded in giving a better extra-curricular system in many ways. Their work can be seen in the method of re- cording each student's extra-curricular record, in the planning of a calendar of events for the coming year, and in saving money for the school by having orchestras bid for school dances. BCCSTER CLUB Booster Club-a club that is hard to get in, and harder to stay in. Why? Its membership is limited to fifty-six, and in order to get in, one must be elected by the club, in order to stay in, one must make the number of points required. Four people deserving special mention for their efforts this year are Ruth Sillitoe, Bonita Hunt, Thelma Moore, and Charles Foley. Promotion of every activity of school is the work of this group. Special functions this year included a peppy football rally, decorating for annual football banquet, three dances, chief of which were the Victory Dance after the Niles game and Groundhog Dance to raise Community Fund pledge, weekly decoration of football field, ticket sales, and annual Frolics. This yearls work was ably led by the following officers: President, Walter hflathie- son, Charles Foleyg Vice President, Charles Foley, Robert Taylor, Secretary, Julia hflarshallg Treasurer, Robert Taylor, Jason Nloore. Faculty sponsors are: Augusta l. Barrick, Harry L. Cowden, Doris VV. Nlalmsberry, and Ruth B. Wheeler. Among the numerous parties held, perhaps the outstanding one was the Christmas party held at the home of Evelyn Cross. The Mardi Gras , sponsored jointly with the French Club, was a unique and colorful social event of the year. The programs were educational as well as intensely interesting, especially an account of actual experiences in Nicaragua by Wilho Hatunen. A high spot was a debate wholly in Spanish on the resolution That United States should annex Cuba . The negative, upheld by George Gentithes and Harold Green, bowed in a moral defeat before the onslaught of the affirmative, upheld by VVilson Binger and Howard Niorrison. Officers were: President, George Gentithes, Howard blorrisong Vice President, Harold Green, VVilson Bingerg Secretary, Henry Betz, Virginia Pierson, Treasurer, Orville VVilsor1, Steve liatey. Harold H. Hetzler is the sponsor of the club. P. S. Refreshments were exceptionally good this year. CERCLE FRANCAIS Le Cercle Francais is composed of the twelfth grade French students who make at least G-plus in that subject. Klrs. Kathryn lIcCurdy is faculty sponsor, while officers for the two semesters included: President, Helen llandrean, Jessie Lee llillerg Vice President, Jean Blair, Ruth Pfaug Secretary, Theda Parker, Edith Harrell. The programs of the meetings, which are held every two weeks, consist of reports on French books and authors, scenes from French plays, and entertainment a la Fran- cais. Together with the Spanish Club, the second annual Nlardi Gras was held, an occasion colorful with gay costumes. Fancy dress prizes were awarded to Virginia Pierson, Pete Klarshall, llax Saddle, Genevieve Poulton, and bliss Edith Paddock. The carnival Rex felected by the student bodyj was Howard lfforrison. Summer reading, prose and poetry of Rudyard Kipling, and essays, old and new, were subjects which the club enjoyed. The Christmas meeting was a social gathering at the home of Bliss Risdon. Songs were sung, and myths and stories of Christmas were told. DEBATE CLUB Resolved: That the United States should adopt a system of radio control and operation similar to that of Great Britainl' was the subject used for debate this year. Three of the five state league engagements were victories for the home teams, coached by Augusta l. Barrick. The affirmative team gained decisions over Youngs- town East and Kent, while the negative squad won from East Palestine. Affirmative debaters dropped a decision to Ravenna, and the negative, to Columbiana. Non-de- cision clashes were held with Howland, Ravenna, and Charleroi. Several members advanced their standing in the National Forensic League, of which Warren is a chapter. Wilson Binger, club president, received the Degree of Distinction, while Avery Phillis, secretary-treasurer, and Howard Nlorrison earned the Degree of Excellence. In the '33 opener, the Prexies battered Struthers, a big, experienced team, to a l2-0 score. The game was featured by a smooth running attack and a great defensive line. But next came the sad tale that Erie nipped the Presidents, 6-2. A desperate but perfectly executed forty-yard pass in the last seven minutes of play placed a scrappy Erie East in a position to score and terminated one of the greatest grid battles ever waged under the flood lights of Harding High. This fray was marked by the play of Dixon, giant center. Youngstown East was somewhat of a breather, as VVarren scored at will. Danny Cononico made his first appearance as quarterback in this game and played like a veteran. A supposedly mild band of Quakers from Salem proved to be a war-like grid ma- chine that clawed and scratched at the Prexies in a bitter battle, before succumbing to a 21-0 defeat. Chickerneo and Brogden featured with long 1'uns. Playing an undefeated Sharon team, Warren was on the short end of a 6-O score until late in the second quarter, when Hjuniey' Davis skirted right end for twelve yards and a touchdown and then kicked the extra point to win the game, 7-6. A Home-coming crowd witnessed a steam roller attack on Akron Garfield that netted five touchdowns. Individual stars blossomed forth, but the scoring was the result of team-work and perfect blocking, along with some beautiful ball-toting by Brogden, Davis, Cononico, Sanfrey, and Chickerneo. Long runs and a big score for the Red and VVhite team made the Girard game thrilling to watch. Warren smashed through Youngstown South, one of its greatest rivals, for the seventh Victory of the season. Ildarsh and Dixon, mainstays on the line, seemed to be every place on the field. Youngstown Rayen upset our winning streak by a 6-0 triumph. Harding High Eleven had to put up one of its stiffest fights of the season before subduing an under-rated, scrappy Erie Tech. Eleven by a 14-0 count in the final home game of the year. The line played a great defensive game for the Red and White team. That Annual Turkey Day battle with Niles was a cheerful earfuln. For the first time in three years, the lVIcKinley Warriors went down to defeat under a crushing attack. Warren High was honored by having four players placed on all of the all-county elevens selected by the various newspaper men in the county. They were: NIarsh, Gisserelli, Sabo, and Davis. A very successful season we call it. Huge Crowds! Cheering Students! Peppy Cheer-leaders! Snappy Band! Super-fine Coaching! Doc Kelly! WINNING TEADT! ! Congratulations, Harding High! With the score deadlocked, Warren suddenly came to life in the last two minutes and nipped Chaney, 17-14. After a rough but thrilling game, Ashtabula's Golden Panthers nosed out Harding by one point. . The New Castle flippers with their tight-shifting zone defense handed Warren a real set-back. Then flashing a smooth-working attack, Harding chalked up its second win of the season over Youngstown East. The liassillon cagers ran wild to defeat the Presidents, 37-17. The work of Dixon and Bryant stood out in this game. Harding High stepped to the front in the race for the mythical county A basket- ball championship by swamping Girard, 28 to 15. South nipped the Prexies by tallying two fouls in an overtime period. Rayenls cagers likewise tripped the W. H. S. team. Showing its best form of the season, War1'en's quintet smothered Struthers, 34-15. This game brought out the defensive work of Davis and Fini. Out-smarting Niles at its own game, Warren turned back its ancient foe, 21-16. junie Davis finished his long and brilliant athletic career for Harding High in this fray. All members of the Red and White team turned in a brilliant demonstration of basketball as they nosed out Campbell liemorial by a 21-18 tally. Warrenls winning streak was broken by Salem Quakers and again by Liverpool. The Red and White realized its highest aims as it shifted defenses at the half time, and took Niles l1cKinley's measure at 25-15. Brookfield was also defeated by a good margin. ln a game of thrills, Sharon vanquished Warren 17-14. GIRLS With only three lettermen back from last year, the Girls' Team went through the season with three victories and five losses. Both on the home floor and abroad. Warren was unable to stop the sharp shooting of the hflesopotamia giants and the Struthers sextette, Playing at Girard, our girls came home with another loss. Warren's first victory of the season resulted in breaking the winning streak of Brookfield. The season ended with an easy victory over Newton Falls. The following players received letters this year: R. Bower, D. Cunningham, H. Suomi, NI. Lucas, V. Allen, C. Palac, J. llorton, J. 1IcConnell, J. lluter, and A. Grumbling, llanager.
