AND PRAISE OUR TEAMS WITH HEART AND SOUL AS SEASONS CHANGE AND THE AIR TURNS COOL, WE BLEND AND ADAPT TO OUR HARD WORKING SCHOOL. WHEN THE SKIES TINT GREY, AND THE WIND BLOWS COLD, WE ARE MORE THAN PROUD OF THE PURPLE AND GOLD. By Patti Corkren Before school started many students were anxiously awaiting schedule day. Damita, Sabrina and Anissa were but a few who arrived early. Duwanna Burse knows what it takes to be successful. Sometimes the day is oh, so boring” but Easton Eagles plow through, giving it their all. Connie Washington and a few of her friends show their one—in—a—million smiles. 8 • V-’W Rosa and Glenda Canales discussing their schedules ear- ly in the year The Eaglettes always lend a bit of sparkle to our games Cary Barard waits anxiously during the last few’ minutes of the game. At a Warren Easton game we meet, to hear the Eagle band start a new beat. Sean Martin strikes a sparkling smile. 11 1 Avril Williams and Rita Washington rush to their lockers before school begins. Shannon Dowling faces a distressing play, but Isaac Fields' reassurance saves the day. Phoebe Brown concentrates on the half time perfor- mance yet to come. Maira Tenorio. one of our hard working Seniors, caught busy by our camera. 13 ACADEMICS Full of fun and laughter. Dr. Ferguson is definitely a witty person. She really enjoys being at Easton. She is an Easton graduate herself and feels particularly close to the school and the students. Dr. Ferguson also attended the University of New Orleans where she received her Doctorate Degree in Education. Whether organizing her desk or addressing an assembly. Dr. Ferguson works hard. 18 Mrs. )nn Demas Mr Armand Devezin WORKS TOGETHER FOR EASTON The administrative team provides lead- ership and support for the instructional program. This active team works hard with students, parents and teachers to maintain academic excellence and to bring about meaningful changes for the ongoing improvement of the quality of life at Warren Easton. Team members consider it a privilege to have the opportu- nity to provide leadership to the young people at Easton. Mrs. Jean Demas attended Fisk Univer- sity in Virginia and the University of New Orleans. Warren Easton's reputation prompted her to move from Chemis- try to the post of Assistant Principal, which she now holds. She looks forward to a successful year, with hope for a bright tomorrow. Mr. Armand Devezin is in his second year as Assistant Principal at Easton. He attended Southern, Xavier and Loyola Universities, majoring in English Educa- tion and Administration. Mr. Devezin en- joys working at Easton, because he feels it is one of the best schools around. 19 COUNSELORS If you're having trouble planning your future, we have three of the best counsel- ors in the city to help you: Mr. Benjamin, Mrs. Duhe, and Mr. Latour. All three have Master's Degrees. If education isn't proof enough, years of experience is. Mrs. Duhe has been at Easton for thirteen years; Mr. Latour, ten years; and Mr. Benjamin, five years. Now that you know where to go when you have a problem academically, career wise, or just for guidance, take ad- vantage of their expertise. d Roland Benjamin Barbara Duhe Patrick Latour Debbie Howard A library is a place for research reading and enjoyment. Easton's library has an im- mense collection of books. Whether you are looking for that light fiction book for a rainy afternoon's reading, or a few books of the non-fiction variety to help with that term paper, chances are you will find what you want here. The resources it contains are quite extensive. From re-stacking, to cataloging, giving classwork on use of li- brary or conducting the Video and Li- brary Club meetings, our library staff is always busy. Pan of the job of librarian is to monitor television specials. Mrs. Schaefer enjoys the technical side of video. Mrs. Iris Bums takes time out from her busy sched- ule to smile for the camera. 21 OUR PROUD SECRETARIES ... KEEPING THINGS IN ORDER At Warren Easton we are especially proud of our lovely hard-working secretarial staff. They lend a helping hand, whether they are a substitute teacher, custodian, cafeteria worker, security guard, or nurse. So many people keep our school running smoothly, and it is their efforts that ease the stress for us to achieve all that we do. Substitute James Malkiewicz, Ms. Yolanda Price, and therapists Pam Hurrclbrink and Robert Hooks are here twice a week to help students. Nurse Elizabeth Stansbury is always ready to answer questions. Special Education aides Mrs. Melancon and Mrs. Elyvia Blun are invaluable to all of us. Mr. Ray Jones is busy patrolling and keeping us all on our toes and safe from outsiders. 34 CAFETERIA LADIES Our cafeteria workers help us make it through the day. From planning nutritious meals to gracious serving, these talented ladies keep us coming back for more. Headed by Mrs. Celestan Washington, de- partment members are: Margaret A. Doyle Martha McClain Gloria Johnson Beverly Davis Dianne Monroe Hermanese Bell Delores Stirgus Margie Bolden CAFETERIA MONITORS Patience is the motto of the cafeteria monitors. Ms. Berlean Brock Mrs. Clara Sios CUSTODIANS To be young adults is to be responsible, and being responsible means helping the custodians keep our school clean. These hard working people never seem to see the end of litter, floor polishing, and cleaning; but our school gleams every morning. Custodians pictured are: Mrs. C. Brown, Mrs. M. Smith, Mrs. J. PROUD EAGLES e have to live with ourselves, and so We want to be fit for ourselves to know. We want to be able, as days go by. Always to look ourselves straight in the eye; We don't want to stand, with the setting sun, And hate ourselves for things we have done. We want to go out with our heads erect. We want to deserve all men's respect. But here in the struggle for fame and self. We want to be able to like ourselves. We don't want to look at ourselves and know That we're empty inside with nothing to show. We don't want to keep on a closet shelf A lot of secrets about ourselves. And fool ourselves, as we come and go. Into thinking that nobody else will know The kind of people we really are; We don't want to dress up ourselves in shame. We can never hide from ourselves. We see what others may never see. We know what others may never know; We never can fool ourselves, and so. Ju- niors are a rare combination of fun times and serious ambitions. Our ambitions range from becoming dancers to engineers; from writers to executives. We really know what we want out of life and we are taking the right steps to achieve our goals. We are serious when we need to be, and we make the most of everything we do. Even now we re making plans for our fun time. We re already dreaming about vacations, beaches, movies, and no homework. Those hazy, lazy summer days are fast approaching. The 1985-86 school year has seen many new faces, Freshman from many Junior High Schools arrived this year. The freshmen say that they are enjoying to. The hardest adjustment to make, of course, is the dress code. From faded blue jeans and sweats to slightly more formal at- tire is a big adjustment in itself for anyone. The added worries of being in high school, more advanced classes, new surroundings, and new people all make life difficult for freshmen. Living the life of an Eagle is part of learning and these students are accomplish- ing more than ever before. From sports to student council. Easton students are full of school spirit during Homecoming Week, when the dress code is dropped and we all don our favorite costumes. Each day has a different theme: Fifty's Day turns out so many Fonzies, La- vernes and Shirleys that we really expect to hear the strains of Fats Domino's Blueberry Hill coming over the loudspeakers. Hobo day allows the Eagles to pull out all of the stops and use anything and everything as clothing. For the First time this year, we had Punk Rocker Day. There were so many Cyndy Lauper's about, one was never sure if the rock star had actually dropped in for a visit or not. All in all, dress-up week is one of our favorite times of the year, and in typical Easton style. Eagles participate all the way. Hobos were found everywhere; lurking in corners, and lounging in classrooms. Have you ever seen anything like it? Julie Ross and Fay Harrison don’t want to be left out! Wonder what these folks had for lunch? 140 Tammy Meilleur sports her NIFTY FIFTY'S look. And this man is a teacher? HOMECOMING 1985 THE PEP RALLY The Easton auditorium was the scene of some riotous activity on the morning of Homecoming Day. The noise was deafen- ing as students cheered and laughed them- selves into the spirit of the day. Members of the cheerleading squad acted out a sce- nario of homecoming presentations—but with a twist. The boy cheerleaders took the parts of the homecoming Maids. We had no idea they had such great legs! THE PARADE The Eagles paraded, with glorious smiles, down Canal Street to the Super- dome where our game was held. As the Homecoming Court waved to the stopped traffic and parade goers, our Band kept up the pace with their well rehearsed and bouncy renditions of some popular songs. As twilight set in, the Eaglettes, HighStep- pers and Cheerleaders joined in the fun, shining brightly in their purple and gold. It was a sight to behold. The parade begins ... led by this year's Homecoming Eagle. Curtis Young, and the Band. Queen Elisha Picot and King Ryan Johnson wait patiently for their part of the parade to begin to move. Alan Maldanado was glad to provide some spirit for our handicapped Eagles, who with the help of the cheerleaders, marched right behind the band. 145 1985-1986 Finally, the day has arrived. You've spent weeks preparing, trying on dresses, searching for the one that will be just perfect. So many visits to the tuxedo rent- al, so many fittings, so many worries. Am I ready for this? My hair will never be dry in time. What's this spot on my jacket? How could they leave those pants so short? What if he doesn't show up? What if she hates the way I dance? Will it be a perfect night? Of course, it is Homecoming—a night to remember. I I 146 HOMECOMING Our 198V86 Homecoming Queen is the lovely Elisha Picot, the daughter of Mrs. Leslie Rose Picot and Mr. Harry Pi- cot. ROYALTY REIGNS OUR QUEEN, OUR KING AND A GLORIOUS COURT The Homecoming Dance was truly a night of beauty. From the glorious lobby of the Le Pavillion Hotel to the waltz of the homecoming couples, the stars shone brightly on Easton's Court. The ladies were dressed, of course, all in white, each a mag- nificent representation of cloud like splen- dor. The gentlemen, in tuxedos, perfectly complimented the ladies. All looked digni- fied, handsome, and noble. Highlighting the occasion, members of the court, coached by Ms. Mabel Benjamin, waltzed for the audience who looked on with de- light. The sight was one to behold as seven lovely couples glided around the dance floor. Rosaline Marie Ford, a student at NOCCA for two years, caught the audience unexpectedly as she performed a modern jazz routine. Dressed in fiery red leotards, she captured their attention effortlessly. Also to be commended was an eloquent Eagle painted by Mr. Jordan, which was on center stage. The abundance and variety of food was greatly appreciated by the stu- dents. Roast beef, ham, chicken drum- mettes, mini pizza, and mini muffalettas were among the tasty foods served. Thanks to the planning of Mrs. Washington, Ms. Benjamin, Mrs. Crier, Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Bowen, Mr. Dunbar and Mrs. Huckaby, the Homecoming Dance was a real success. As the King. Parents, students, and teachers gathered in the Easton Auditorium where the choir and band shared their talents with the appre- ciative guests. Dr. Ferguson recognized the efforts of parents and teachers alike, stressing the points that students must be accountable themselves for their school success and fail- ures. Parents visited with teachers in the gym, which was a pleasant experience for all. Re- freshments in the cafeteria topped off the evening. Patrice and her parents take time to pose for a family Most students really enjoy introducing their parents to portrait while Mrs. Demas decides to take a peek at their teachers, the many pamphlets on display. 158 Mr. Armand Devezin with a parent, discuss the meaning of good behavior to a students future success. Easton's trumpet section really blew us out. Dr. Ferguson's introduction and speech were, as always, inspiring and helpful. She presented a plaque of apprecia- tion to Mrs. Brown, outgoing President of the Parents Co-Op Club. 159 BLOOD DRIVE The Blood Drive was held on Nov. 5,1985. Our students usually look forward every year to participating in the drive. The students always support this school sponsored drive because they know where their duties lie. If you can save someone's life by just giving one pint of blood, you know you've done your part. And Easton Eagles always do their fair share. Mr. Hill gives blood with ease. Rochelle Simpson waits eagerly to donate. Terri Mickle relaxes after her donation. Everyone receives orange juice and cookies afterward to help restore the body sugars. 160 161 DO THEY KNOW IT’S ---CHRISTMAS---- Warren Easton's Christmas celebration was held on Dec. 19, 1985. Ms. Demarest, who conducted the Christmas program, did a splendid job. The choir, band, drama club, and Asian club were all terrific. The persons who participated in the Christmas program should be commended. We're hoping next year will be a greater success. Tran Bui shows everyone that she also has talent. Zaron Griddle will really get a swerve out of his skate board, as Angela Roby looks on. 162 WHAT IT WAS ... WHAT IT IS Phyllis Diller did it, Joan Collins prob- ably does it, and now our school is doing it. We are getting a facelift! And a good one at that. Renovation started at the be- ginning of this school year with the help of Sheriff Foti and a crew of his inmates. The halls of Warren Easton are smiling once again after the successful renovation. Many men dedicated their time, determi- nation, and talent to make this gesture. We'd like to thank the inmates and guards for their terrific work in restoring this school to its former beauty; beauty that has been lost for decades. 166 CONGRATULATIONS SENIORS OF 86 from MARGARET DIAZ class of ’85 Best of Luck 167 Congratulations to my friends Tina A. of 86 Patrice L. Everyone from our new mayor Sidney Barthelemy to singing legend Irma Thomas made an appearance, letting us become part of their lives. Informative speeches, entertaining dances and singing were all a part of the important month s activities. AND SHARE ... 2 OUR DIFFERENCES The Asian club brought to us their celebration of New Year, TET. We were delighted to share in this major holiday with our Asian students. Native dances and singing by the Asian club provided the entertainment. Pan American Week found us again being entertained by the native dancers of many of the hispanic countries. The colorful costumes enlivened the ballet. Again during Black History Month we were treated to the splendid costumes of the Tchoupitulous Indians. This club parades during Mardi Gras but work hard all year long, sewing the thousands of beads which make the costumes shimmer and add a unique display to the season. 3 SPRING MOVES IN Spring time in New Orleans brings so many activities to Warren Easton. With the coming of warmer weather and blossoming flowers comes the National Honor Society Recognition program, Foreign language Contests (and Winners for us this year!) and the Spring Concert with the Choir treating the parents and students to a musical night. 4 r i Sports teams always have their award banquets held during the spring, a much awaited social function for both students and team coaches. This spring also brought to Warren Easton an honor. We were chosen to help blow up the balloons for the big Liberty Ride Festival celebration. 5000 of them in all—we always knew we had more hot air than anybody else! 5 EAGLES SLIDE INTO 1st ROUND CHAMPIONSHIP The Warren Easton Eagles baseball team captured the first round 10 AAAA title by defeating the McDonogh 35 Roneagles by 11 to 1. Then, before we even knew it they moved into the second round of district play with a well played 21 to 0 win over the Tro- jans. They continued play throughout the season; hitting hard, running full speed ahead. Coaches Costa and Robinson are to be congratulated as well as team members. These words can be heard regularly, as one walks down the halls of Warren Eas- ton. The reason is that the Tennis Team, coached by Mr. Glen Greiner, has made its mark. We've studied for exams, written tons of papers, worried about grades and spent tearful nights in fear ... But now it is Senior Day; a time for awards, laughter and sharing. We have of course, the Prom and Graduation to attend yet, but this day is special; this day is ours alone. Dr. Barbara Ferguson receives a kiss and flowers from members of the '86 yearbook staff. Roy Montague received a scholarship from the military. 10 AND GRACE MADE FOR CINDERELLAS 'V-' ••v GRADUATION WHAT THOUGH THE RADIANCE WHICH WAS ONCE SO BRIGHT BE NOW FOREVER TAKEN FROM MY SIGHT THOUGH NOTHING CAN BRING BACK THE HOUR OF SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, OF GLORY IN THE FLOWER; 14 15 CONGRATULATIONS 86 SENIORS from NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY THE YMCA YOUTH LEGISLATURE SALUTES THE CLASS of '86 CONGRATULATIONS TO ANTONIO PHILLIPS from THE YMCA BEST WISHES ANTONIO and THE CLASS OF ’86 Martin Bunch CONGRATULATIONS SUCCESS LUCK from Dorothy 1986 SOFTBALL TEAM CONGRATULATIONS ANTONIO PHILLIPS from WANDA SMITH BEST WISHES TO THE SENIOR CLASS YMCA ANTONIO PHILLIPS We wish you all the Best for your Future Dr. Saul Kahn CONGRATULATIONS to THE CLASS OF '86 MAMIE THE SPIRIT GROUPS HIGH STEPPERS MAJORETTES FLAGTWIRLERS WHAT A YEAR!
