Have you ever considered what has been accomplished in the short two hundred years of this country? Suppose we look at only the past two generations-your parents and grandparents These are the people who within just five decades have increased life expectancy by approximately 50%; who, while cutting they workday by one-third, have more than doubled per capita output. These are the people who have given you a health- ier world than they found. Because of this, you no longer have to fear epidemics of flu, typhus, dip- theria, smallpox, scarlet fever, measles, mumps and polio. Let me remind you these people lived through his- tory's greatest depression. Many of these people know what it is to be poor, to be hungry and cold. Because of this, they determined that it would not happen to you, that you would have a better life, better schools and greater opportunities to succeed. Because they were materialistic, you will work fewer hours, learn more, have more leisure time, travel to more distant places and have more of a chance to follow your life's ambition. They put men on the moon, sent satellites to outer space to investigate other planets and are preparing to send space stations into orbit where people will live for months and perhaps years. tion. They set in motion new laws giving con- servation new meaning and in setting aside land for you and your children to enjoy. They also hold the record for paying taxes—al- though you will probably exceed them this time. While they have done all these things, they have had some failures. They have not yet found an al- ternative for war nor for hatred. Perhaps this gener- ation will perfect the social mechanisms by which all men may follow their ambitions without the threat of force. Crime has still not been conquered. But they made more progress by the sweat of their brows than in any previous era. If your generation can make as much progress in as many years and areas as these two generations have, you should be able to solve many of our remaining ills. It is my hope, and I know the hope of these two generations, that you will find the answers to many of these problems that plague mankind. But it will not be easy. You cannot do it by conducting your lives on the Cafeteria Plan-self-service only! You won't do it by negative thoughts, by tearing down or belittling, by being disrespectful, by criticizing, nor by being lazy. You may, and can, do it by hard work, humility, hope and faith in mankind. Try it. This is my challenge to you. 4' JroZOLs These are also the people who fought man's grisliest war. They are the people who defeated the tyranny of Hitler, and who, when it was all over, had the compassion to spend billions of dollars to help their former enemies to rebuild their homeland. These two generations built thousands of high schools, trained and hired tens of thousands of bet- ter teachers, and at the same time made higher education a real possibility for millions of young- sters—where it once was only the dream of a wealthy few. And they made a start-although a late one-in healing the scars of the earth and in fighting pollu- 9 10 Office Staff Mrs. B. Duhe Mr. P. Lateur Mrs. M. Gremillion Mrs. V. Lassus Counselors Mrs. G. RAH! On every play we're marching forward. It won't be long before we score. We'll send a man around the end to fool them. Then hit the line until we overrule them. We've got the stuff that makes us tough. Hey! Easton is the champion today! Alma Mater Warren Easton marches onward, through victory and defeat. And bravely without murmur, what fortune sends we meet; For we're all for Warren Easton And we'll strive to gain and hold, The honor of our high school and The purple and old gold. Boy's High School, Caliope Street, was the only boy's high school in New Orleans. In 1896, the first football team was organized, electing George Stein as its Captain. The school colors. Purple and Gold, were chosen this year, and the first issue of the school paper was published. This paper, “The Old Gold and Purple has the reputation of being the oldest school paper in the South. Also in the year 18%, the first Senior Class Officers were elected, and Max Moss had the honor of being chosen as President. This year actually marks the beginning of the activities of the present Warren Easton High School. The present school building of E type construction, costing almost $400,000 was erected in 1913, and opened its first session on September 24, with Frank W. Gregory as Principal. He had been the Principal of the Boy's High School. The dedication of the building was held on May 26,1914, and was conducted by the Society of the Alumni of New Orleans. The year 1925 marked the beginning of the first Easton Yearbook which was published under the name, the Eastonite. One of the great milestones in the history of Warren Easton was the writing of its “Alma Mater by C.W. Spencer ]r., in 1927. In the year 1929, Easton's band was rated the largest high school band in the State. During this decade, the Debate Society, one of the first organizations at Warren Easton Boy's High, won all of its out-of-town tour debates. In 1933, the first Pep Squad was organized, being the first in the public schools of New Orleans. The year 1924 marked the beginning of Student government at Warren Easton. For the first time. Student Council Officers were chosen, with Raymond Miller as President. An event almost as great as the writing of the “Alma Mater was the composing of the Fight Song by Mr. Anthony J. Valentino and Mr. Frank Cardenia, in 1945. In 1947, Easton's Science Lab was considered one of the best in New Orleans Public Schools. In the summer of 1952, the old Building of Boy's was renovated to make ready for the admittance of girls, and the name was changed from Warren Easton Boy's High School to Warren Easton Senior High School. This not only brought girl students but the first woman principal in the history of the school, Miss Amy H. Hinrichs. Having girls in the school, prompted the Girls Flag Team to color Half-time Ceremonies at sporting events. The year 1953 brought honors to Easton in Debate and Distributive Education, both winning first place in Debate Contests. The Journalism Department also won honors in 1954, by being awarded the National Freedom Foundation Award; and in 1956, by being awarded first place in the National Accident Prevention Contest for Easton's Traffic Issue of Old Gold and Purple. Miss Amy Hinrichs retired in 1956, and Mr. Harry T. Garland became Principal. To this day, Easton has been active in all fields; since it has continued uninterrupted for 15 years now, it is ranked in age with the oldest high schools in America. Mr. E.R. Tootle is now principal of Easton. 162 YOUR SIGHTS ON BELL Call 529-9482 For Employment Information South Central Bell An f quo I Opportunity fmpioyur Photographs By D.H.
