We the editors have done our best to make it the type of yearbook everyone can enjoy not only now but in future years. Taking into consideration that this is the 50th year of our school we have seen to it that our yearbook has helped celebrate this anniver- sary. Fifty years is a long time. This year wa- hut one in particular for you to remember. May the 1963 Eagle be a reminder to you of all the fun, all the work, and all the achievements that you have had in senior high. Thank you, Your Editors-in-Chief Peggy Cocreham and Janice Akin Students of Easton, Your Principal Writes to You This Note: A man does not find satisfaction in any other way but by making others happy. This teaching has been a part of the philosophy of our school for generations and has allowed untold numbers of our students to grow and flourish into the kind of adults that make us proud to be associ- ated with. To the Senior Class of 1963, I hope that the many experiences you have shared at Warren Easton will afford you the privilege of realizing that the purpose of our progam was not the achieving of material success but the overall realization that if something is worth doing then every effort should be made to carry it to its completion. The success of today is a fleeting thing but, the experiences shared and the friendships made in building a better way of life will last forever. 77 18 Our Principal Mr. Harry T. Garland Mr. W. O. Boys’ High School, Caliope Street, was the only boys’ high school in New Orleans. In 1896, the first football team was organized, electing George Stein as its Captain. The school colors, Purple and Gold, were chosen this year, and the first issue of the school paper was published. This paper, ‘'The Old Gold and Purple” has the reputation of being the oldest school paper in the South. Also in the year 1896, the first Senior Class Officers were elected, and Max Moss had the honor of being chosen as President. This year actually marks the beginning of the activities of the present Warren Easton High School. The present school building of “E” type construction, costing almost S400.000 was erected in 1913, and opened its first session on September 24, with Frank W. Gregory as Principal. He had been the principal of the Boy’s High School. The dedication of the building was held on May 26, 1914, and was conducted by the Society of the Alumni of New Orleans. The year 1925 marked the beginning of the first Easton Yearbook which was published under the name, the “Eastonite.” One of the great milestones in the history of Warren Easton was the writing of its “Alma Mater” by C. W. Spencer Jr., in 1927. In the year 1929, Easton’s band was rated the largest high school band in the State. During this decade, the Debate Society, one of the first organizations at Warren Easton Boys’ High, won all of its out-of-town tour debates. In 1933, the first Pep Squad was organized, being the first in the public schools of New Orleans. The year 1924 marked the beginning of Student government at Warren Easton. For the first time. Student Council Officers were chosen, with Raymond Miller as President. An event almost as great as the writing of the “Alma Mater” was the composing of the “Fight Song” bv Mr. Anthony J. Valentino and Mr. Frank Cardenia. in 1945. In 1947, Easton’s Science Lab was considered one of the best in the New Orleans Public Schools. In the summer of 1952. the old building of Boys’ was renovated to make ready for the admittance of girls, and the name was changed from Warren Easton Boys’ High School to Warren Easton Senior High School. This not only brought girl students but the first woman principal in the history of the school, Miss Amy H. Hinrichs. Having girls in the school, prompted the Girls’ Flag Team to color Half-time Ceremonies at sporting events. The year 1953 brought honors to Easton in Debate and Distributive Education, both winning first place in State Contests. The Journalism Department also won honors in 1951. by being awarded the National Freedom Foundation Award: and in 1956, by being awarded first place in the National Accident Prevention Contest for Easton’s Traffic Issue of Old Gold and Purple. Miss Amy Hinrichs retired in the year 1956, and Mr. Harry T. Garland became Principal. To this day, Easton has been active in all fields: since it has continued uninterrupted for 50 years now. it is ranked in age with the oldest high schools in America. During the school year these representatives have meetings to dis- cuss the different issues that may come up pertaining to school ac- tivities. MEMBERS IN MEETING The Anchor Club Anchor Clubs are international. How- ever, there is only one in the city of New Orleans and that is the Warren Easton Anchor Club. The purpose for which Anchor Clubs were founded is to provide an opportunity through which the leaders and potential leaders of the high school age group are given a chance to develop their initiative and leadership ability. This is accomplished by undertaking a program of service in the school and community. Programs that have been undertaken bv Easton's Anchor Club range from polish- ing trophies to giving Christmas parties for needy families. By doing these things, Anchor Club members learn their prospective adult roles in life and the meaning of a serviceable, aggressive citizenship which is necessary for the maintenance of principles of free- dom. Gail Gonzales, Sec.; Jody Wollard, Hist.; Betty Hines. Pres.; Glen Forrest, V. Pres.; Jane Brennen, Treas. Senior members and sponsors Junior and Sophomore members 130 The Warren Easton Key Club is the boys service organization at our school. This club is actually a model Kiwanis program. To be an active member of the Key Club one must attain an overall average of eighty. The of- ficers of this year’s Key Club are John Sable, president; James Wiley, Vice President; Mike Mc- Fadden, Secretary; Buddy Ryals, Treasurer; and Gus Shultz. Vice Treasurer. Some of the major activities planned by the Key Club this year were: the teachers aid com- mittee, the book-binding committee, which bound the S.M.S.G. Books: Cafeteria committee which helps in our new cafeteria and Mardi Gras coke stand which raises money for the Key Club con- vention. The Club Pictured above arc the members of the Key Club with their sponsors. 131 The Debate Club As Easton celebrates its fiftieth anniversary, de- bating continues to maintain its place of importance in the scholastic as well as in the extra-curricular schedule. Before the school became co-educational. it had a long tradition of winning debate teams which has been carried on to some degree during the last decade. Teams have placed first several times winning State Rally in 1956 and receiving other honors, earning for themselves enough points to become members of the National Forensic League in 1960. The first all girl team was formed in 1956. Girls, as well as boy teams, represent Easton at the debating tournaments throughout the state beginning in December with six rounds of debating at the University of Southwestern in Lafayette and climaxing their activities each year in April at L.S.U. at the State Rally. 132 Members not pictured above Jeni Su Lee, Jane Shoults, James Steward. Pelican State “The Objective of Pelican State is to educate its citizens of the rights and privileges as well as the responsibilities of citizenship. Citizens are chosen on achievement, merit, and character to attend the mythical state of Pelican where they set up government on the city, parish, and state levels. Easton’s delegates held the following positions as they are pictured below: Marsha Pickett, Comm, of Public Health, Parish Party Committeeman. Parish Nominee for Lt. Your joy or your sorrow for all ETERNITY depends upon it. The question is: Are you SAVED? It is not if you are a member of some church, but. Are you SAVED? It is not how good you are, but, ARE YOU SAVED? No one can enjoy the blessings of God or go to Heaven without being saved. Jesus said to Nicodemus in John 3:7 YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN. God gives us in His Word the ONLY plan for Salvation. The Plan is simple, you can be saved TODAY. First, my friend, you must realize YOU ARE A SINNER. ‘‘There is none righteous, no, not one. —Romans 3:10. ‘‘For there is no difference: For ALL have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. —Romans 3:22, 23. There is NO CHANCE to be saved unless you come to realize you are a SINNER. Because you are a sinner, you are CONDEMNED TO DIE. For the wages of sin is death. —Romans 6:23. Sin, bringeth forth death. —James 1:15. This means separation from God, in HELL, FOREVER. How terrible. Yes, my friend, but it is true. But God loved you so much that HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, Jesus Christ, as your SUBSTITUTE, Who bore YOUR sin, and died in YOUR place. He hath made HIM (Jesus) to be SIN for US, who knew no sin; that WE might BE MADE the RIGHT- EOUSNESS of God in HIM. —2 Corinthians 5:21. Who His OWN SELF bare OUR sins in HIS own body on the tree, that WE, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes YE WERE HEALED. —1 Peter 2:24. Jesus had to die. He had to shed HIS BLOOD. “For the LIFE of the flesh IS IN THE BLOOD. — Leviticus 17:11. “Without the SHEDDING OF BLOOD there is no remission. —Hebrews 9:22. Now we cannot understand how our sin was laid upon Jesus, but God says in HIS WORD that it was. SO YOUJl SIN, my friend, was laid UPON JESUS and HE DIED IN YOUR PLACE. It is true. God cannot lie. The Philippian jailor asked Paul and Silas: What must I DO to be SAVED? “And they said, BELIEVE on the Lord Jesus Christ, and THOU SHALT BE SAVED, and thy house. —Acts 16:31. Simply believe on Him as the one who bore YOUR SIN, DIED in YOUR PLACE, was buried and was raised for YOUR JUSTIFICATION. Now call upon Him. For WHOSOEVER shall call upon the name of the Lord, SHALL BE SAVED. —Romans 10:13. The first prayer for a SINNER to pray is given in Luke 18:13—“God be merciful TO ME A SINNER. Now you are a sinner and surely you are sorry because of it. Right NOW, wherever you are lift your heart to God in prayer. It does not take a long, loud prayer, for God is ANXIOUS to save you. Just say: Oh God, I am a sinner, I am sorry, I repent, have MERCY upon me, and SAVE me for Jesus1 sake. Now just take HIM at His Word. “For WHOSOEVER, (that includes YOU) shall call upon the name of the Lord, SHALL BE SAVED, (SHALL BE, not might or can, but) SHALL BE SAVED. — Romans 10:13. Just take God at His WORD. When you have done what He has asked, CLAIM SALVATION BY FAITH, according to HIS WORD. BELIEVE AND THOU SHALT BE SAVED. No church, no lodge, no good works, NO ONE BUT JESUS ONLY CAN SAVE YOU. The simple plan of salvation is: YOU ARE A SINNER; because you are a sinner you MUST DIE or else believe on Christ who was YOUR SUBSTITUTE and died in YOUR PLACE, was buried and was raised again. Just GOD'S SIMPLE PLAN OF SALVATION By FORD PORTER call upon GOD, REALIZING you are a sinner and ask Him to have mercy upon you and save you for JESUS' SAKE. Then just take HIM AT HIS WORD and BY FAITH CLAIM SALVATION. You say, Surely that is not all that is necessary to do to be saved. Yes it is, absolutely all. Thank God many have been won to Christ by this simple plan. It is SCRIPTURAL. IT IS GOD'S PLAN. My friend, BELIEVE IT AND FOLLOW IT TODAY. Now is the time—Today is the day. Behold, NOW is the accepted time; behold, NOW is the day of salvation. —2 Corinthians 6:2. Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. —Proverbs 27:1. If it is not perfectly clear, READ IT OVER and OVER until you understand it. Do not lay this tract down until you do. YOUR SOUL is worth more than all the world. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose HIS OWN SOUL? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? —Mark 8:36, 37. BE SURE YOU ARE SAVED. YOU NEED SALVATION ABOVE EVERYTHING ELSE. IF YOU LOSE YOUR SOUL YOU MISS HEAVEN AND LOSE ALL. GOD HELP YOU TO BE SAVED TODAY. He will save you and also KEEP YOU. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. —1 Corinthians 10:13. DO NOT trust your feelings. They change. STAND on GOD'S PROMISES. They NEVER change. AFTER YOU ARE SAVED THERE ARE THREE THINGS TO PRACTICE DAILY FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH? PRAY—You talk to God. READ YOUR BlBlE—God talks to you. WITNESS—You talk for God. Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before My Father which is in Heaven. —Matthew 10:32. If you are saved, send us word that we may rejoice with you. Address Berean Gospel Distributors, Inc., P. O. Box 891, Indianapolis 6, Indiana, U.S.A.
