Warren CounTy High School has been a symbol of The search Tor wisdom and TruTh. Her hisTory is wriTTen in The hearTs oT graduaTes who have carried her inTluence To all parTs of The world. Since her founding in l906, our high school has conTinued To produce men and women who have Taken Their places in The world wiTh greaTer wisdom and keener undersTanding gained in The years spenT here. Come wiTh us, as we relive The golden memories oT our TirsT TiTTy years. CHAPTER I ChapTer l in The sTory of Warren CounTy High School reveals The acT of creaTion, The moTive behind The acT, and The immediaTe eTTecTs of The acT. On March I4, l906, in order To TurTher public school educaTion, The legislaTure of The STaTe oT Virginia enacTed a law which provided Tor The esTablishmenT and mainTenance oT a sysTem of public high schools. AlThough cerTain high school subiecTs had been TaughT in The2ounTy for more Than ThirTy years, a Tour-year high school did noT begin operaTing unTil The l9O64l907 session, following The acT oT I906. The T'irsT high school, known as FronT Royal High School, had iTs beginning in a Three-sTory brick building locaTed on SouTh Royal Avenue. AT ThaT Time The building, which also housed The graded school, was known as OddTellows Hall. Mr. Thomas W. Troxwell was TirsT principal ol' The high school deparTmenT which boasTed Tour Teachers and TorTy sTudenTs. During The period l906-l908 commercial work was in- Troduced in The high school curriculum. CHAPTER II ln l908 increased enrollmenT made iT necessary To move The high school To Davis Hall, a building on Main STreeT formerly used as an Opera House. Tha high school now had Tour classrooms, a sTudy hall, and an assembly hall. The Two-year sTay in Davis Hall saw The inTroducTion of a normal Training course for Teachers. CHAPTER Ill A second Transfer was made in l9l0 To a new 525,000 brick building on CrescenT STreeT, known as The FronT Royal High and Graded School. This building conTained eleven classrooms, an audiTorium, a principal's oTTice, and a library. Mr. A. B. BrisTow was The TirsT principal in The new loca- Tion. The TirsT graduaTing class, oT Tive members, received Their diplomas in This building. The nexT Tew years wiTnessed The consolidaTion oi sev- eral counTy schools and in l9I8 The name of FronT Royal High School was changed To Warren CounTy High School by The counTy school board. However, This change did noT acTually Take place unTil The I923-l924 session. Con- solidaTion broughT abouT our bus TransporTaTion sysTem, and This in Turn soon over-loaded The high school TaciliTies, To provide Tour addiTional classrooms, The TronT base- menT of The high school was excavaTed in l923 aT a cosT of 54000. The nexT expansion Took place in l927 To provide Three addiTional classrooms. Upon The compleTion oT a new primary building in l936, Tive more classrooms were made available Tor The high school deparTmenT. I
