Several changes also took place in the high school curriculum during this period. ln i920 the normal training course was discontinued. An agricultural course. with accompanying shopworlc, was added in I927. In I934 the band and choral groups were organized. Home economics was introduced in I936. During the stay in the Crescent Street building, numer- ous extra-curricular activities were introduced including the annual and various vocational-related clubs. The eighth grade was added in i928 and a tive-year high school began operation. CHAPTER IV An announcement. in I937, that the American Viscose Corporation intended to locate a large rayon factory in Warren County made it necessary to act at once to plan tor a new high school building. Sixteen acres tronting on West Shipe Street and crown- ing a hill in southern Front Royal were purchased tor Sl5.000 as a site for the new high school. Construction began in I938 and the 5300.000 structure was completed tor the I94O-l94l session. This building, one ot the best equipped in the state, contained eighteen classrooms. four laboratories, a tive- room home economics department, an auditorium seating 975 persons. a double gymnasium, a sound-proof music room, a cafeteria and kitchen, a library, three othces for the administration, thirteen ottices tor teachers, tour loclrer rooms. and a vocational shop. Special teatures ot the school include: an automatic clocl:-and-bell system, a public address system over which announcements can be made to the entire school, and individual lockers. To this plant, tour more classrooms were added in I95l in order to accommodate the rapid increase in enrollment.. Mr. Q. D. Gasque, who became principal ot the high school in l925, served as principal in our present location until I945. At that time he became Division Superintendent of Schools for Warren and Rappahannock Counties, and Mr. James S. Duff succeeded him as principal. There were A home of our own-a dream come true in l9I0 500 students enrolled in W. C. H. S. in l94O. Today our school has an enrollment ot I.O2O students. ln I940 a course in general shopworl: was added to the high school curriculum. With the co-operation ot local merchants. a course in distributive education was estab- lished in I946. Improvements have also been made in the college preparatory course. Students in the tour upper grades may now take advantage of 'Four years in English, social studies, and mathematics: three years in science: and two years in Latin. Spanish, and French. Four years of physical education are available to all students. Those with special artistic talents may also talce advantage ot' our art program. Today our school boasts a student council, six service groups, five musical organizations, two publications, ten class-related clubs, a sports club, and eight athletic teams. Each organization malces a vital contribution to our lite at Warren High.
