We wish to show something of the classes, athletics, organizations, socials, plays, and people, and to explain their im- portance in our school. The halls are filled with your laughter and the echo of your songs, but in this book we have attempted to reflect, in its entirety, the school life of you, the students. As years go by and memories of your high school days become hazy, you can look through this book and remember . . . 4 DEDIUHTIUH With a feeling of pride and deep gratitude, we dedicate our 1951 MIRROR to Mr. Joseph R. Gasque and Elementary Supervisor, Mrs. Leslie Fox Keyser, are the guiding hands behind the school system in Warren County. Their knowledge and sympathetic understanding of our needs are the foundations for our progressiveness. Through the efforts of Mr, Gasque and the School Board additional classroom facilities at the high school have become a reality. Due to their farsighted planning the schools of Warren County continue advancement in education. The Warren County School Board, Superintendent Gasque, and Principal Duff dine in our Home Economics Department. They are, reading from left to right: E. L. Shiner chairmang W. F. Kesler, W. Maddox, R. Mitchell, Q. D. Gasque, C. W. Baldwin H. Gruver, and S. Duff. HIHIIIHISTHHTIUH Whether it's early in the morning or late in the evening, Mr. Duff will be around to share in our activities. In- terested in each one of us, he is always willing to discuss our problems and give us counsel. He reflects dignity, honesty, and sincerity which he attempts to instill in each of us. All students will agree that we would be lost without his continuous assistance. MR. HENRY C. COE Axrirmnt Principal . yitl -Q .. 2- ff 5,1 'ffff fic if ff. an 'Y- MR. JAMES S. DUFF Principal If he is not drawing geometrical configurations or explaining the coefficient of expansion, Mr. Coe will probably be in his office checking the attendance records. Yet he is never too busy to lend a sympathetic ear when help is needed. His dry wit and sense of humor aid in making his classes extremely enjoyable. The initial vision to enter our minds is our Freshman year. As we watched the upper classmen our greatest desire was to become Seniors. Next year as Sophornores we revealed the talent in our midst by presenting a play entitled Huckleberry Finn . The success of this play gave us confidence to D face our junior year. President Charles Holloway talks over the business of the After a Pause for summer vacation we returned with the junior Jamboree and the Variety Show which were both im- mensely successful. In the spring, the theme of Moonlight and Roses was carried out at the Prom which we gave in honor ot the Seniors. At graduation that year we took our places upon the stage thinking ot our Senior year ahead of us On 'August 31st, 1950, the largest Senior Class in the history of Warren County High School came back with great plans 'for the coming year. In August, we were already looking forward to the Variety Show, and what a show that turned out to be. Many of the Jolly Juniors participated in the Glee Club, football, basketball, and other activities. They proved to be indispensable in all the present phases of high school life. As winter turned into spring, the fancies of junior Class turned to the biggest occasion of the year, the Prom. And as the year came to a close, with the Candlelight ceremony, they looked forward to their next and final year at W. C. H. S. Treasurer joan Rodgers is telling President Bryan Ruda- cille that running the junior Class is a big job, while Vice- President Betty Lou Casarotti, Secretary Carolyn Stokes and Sergeant-at-Arms Gary Keyser agree. Each year becomes more interesting and exciting. The Sophomores are taking a very prominent part in all school activities. The abilities of several of our members have been recognized by many of our organizations electing them to offices. The members of the varsity team are displaying con- siderable prowess and are fast developing into out- standing stars. Encouraged by the success of last year's class play, we planned and produced an even bigger and better performance this year. Our star magazine salesman of last year, Grant Megargee, made head lines again this year by topping all others in the school in sales of subscriptions. Now that we have had a taste of being sophisticated sophomores, we are looking for- ward to next year when we will be jolly juniors. MISS HOTINGEKS ROOM Firrt row: D. Clarke, N. Henry, A. Mauck, R. One of our girls, jane Manuel, was chosen for the octette. The Girls I. V. Basketball Team was well assisted by Fresh- men, and yelling from the side lines were five Freshmen as J. V. Cheerleaders. The rapid increase in mem- bership for this year has proven that the students realize they can have fun without indulging in alco- holic beverages. We, under the direction of Miss Fox and Miss Stickley, are striving for greater service and helpfulness throughout the community and better companion- ship among our fellow students. Among the highlights of the year was the election of Lucy Ann Mayberry as Assistant Clerk to the Model General Assembly which met in Richmond this Spring. The Sunday Services held at Brookside brought joy to many little children. Our annual Valentine Dance was expressive of the fun and enjoyment gained from working and playing together. To us, true religion is fully understood and it maintains a definite place in the spiritual growth of our school life. 42 f, First Row: E, Partin, B. Priest. Second Row: B. The well-drilled hand and highly stepping majorettes, under the direction of Mr. Harry Parker, performed with a fine showing at the halves of all the home foot- ball games. We journeyed to Richmond in November but were unfortunately rained out of our performance at the half of the Richmond-North Carolina State game. The Apple Blossom Festival was next on our list of trips, so we climbed into our school buses and headed for the big parade at Winchester. Among the programs given for the student body was the Christmas Concert which brought a message of Yuletide. Again in the spring, the concert band sounded forth with lovely music. The Sextet added much color to these performances. IIIHJUHETTES R. Presgraves, L. Stewart, F. Henry, B. Johnson, V. Allston, J. Cooley, J. Holloway, S. Lewis, I. Smith, C. Stokes, D, Morrison. 1 . Guided by a very capable and inter- ested Miss Vada Miller, we obtained, through out- side activities, additional information about scientific advancements of the day. This year six of our members competed for schol- arships in the National Science Talent Search. To qualify for these scholarships, each student wrote an essay on a scientific project conducted by the entrant and took the national examination. State-wide functions, such as State Open Houses and the Virginia junior Academy of Science meet- ings in Roanoke, were attended by some members of the group. Rexrode A new addition to out many clubs and activities around school is the Camera Club, which has been a useful asset to our student life. The aim of our club was to learn due funda- mentals and theories of photography and to practice this newly acquired knowledge of the subject. We attempted to portray school life about Warren High, to reflect the friendly spirit of the students in their work and play as caught with the aid of the camera. One of our activities was to render the darkroom suitable for use by all organizations, a very beneficial gesture. With the snap of a shutter and the flash of a bulb, the reflection f moment is caught, never to be forgotten. 0 an unforgettable 54 DISTHIBUTIVE EDUCHTIUII Our Distributive Education Club is composed of Seniors who are interested in becoming salesmen and buyers of the future. We made a special study of re- tailing and merchandising. Experience in meeting the public was gained by working in business establish- ments in town as part of our high school educational program. Club work and outside interests are centered around the purpose of our organization-to produce more com- petent salesmen. This year we broadcast a radio pro- gram and held an assembly program at school. Enjoyed by all was our fourth annual employer-em- ployee banquet where we met our managers on an equal footing over good food and pleasant conversa- tion. To complete a productive and educational year, we took a field trip to Washington, D. C., where we toured the many department stores learning the fine points of retailing. Firrt Row: A. Floyd. FUUTBHLL The '50 Wildcats met their opponents with a new Coach-Ralph Floyd of William and Mary, a new formation-single wing, and a new attitude --spirit and hustle. Despite these changes, the team had an unsuccessful season except in one respect. In the initial game of the year, the Wildcats were upset by Strasburg Rams. The Wildcats, agitated by the previous defeat, fought hard but lost the games both to Staunton and Wilson Memorial in away games that followed. Falls Church next rolled up the points while Warren failed to score. At the hands of Harrisonburg we suffered with both a defeat and several injuries. james Wood, a new opponent on our schedule, edged us out 20-14, and our eleven then bowed to a strong Waynesboro team on the home field. The last game of the season, one very much anticipated, was the game between the Warren Wildcats and the Handley Judges. The Judges, failing to score in the final minutes of the game after twelve attempts at our goal, and over- whelmed by our team's determination, were sub- dued by a score of 6-O. It was Warren High's first victory over Handley in five years, and because of this victory many regarded our season as a success- ful one with promising hopes for next year's squad. The Wildcat basketball team, in winning the deciding game from Waynesboro, fought their way into the District V tournament. The Wildcats, how- ever, were defeated in the tournament by Lee High of Staunton. The team, lacking veterans from previous years, fought hard and with determination to gain fourth place in league standings. They finished the season with 13 wins and 7 losses, of which 8 wins and 6 losses were in league competition. Coach Tommy Heslep is checking with his scorekeeper, Kenny Pullen, and his managers, Billy Lube: and Sherry Smith, after the game. 4 , ,Elf 'PF 4 me M 5 di Q Q, ff-WSI, -bv ..!, '33, ' f 5 'S W , 5 1- Q x 5 'S E Nh 5 GIRLS' BHSHETBHLL C. There goes the whistle and the Wildkitties are off to another thrilling victory. The record shows that the highest scores weren't always on our side, except at Playday, when we came out the only undefeated team. One of our guards made District and who should be captains of the District Reserve but two of our own players. Proceed-we all came home with our heads just a little bigger. Captained by Connie Toothman, we came through the season with 4 wins, 5 losses, and 3 ties. Behind us all the way was Coach Liz Thomas, who would be an inspiration for any team. 68 Captain Connie Toothman is conferring with Coach Thomas about the forthcom- ing game.
