One of the highlights during a semester is when the girls prepare their first full course meal. This will prove an excellent foundation for future homes, , Sub-divided into three different courses, foods, sewing and child care, the Home Econo- mics Department this year provided practical training for 390 future homemakers. While foods classes learn how to balance diets and budgets, the child care students are kept busy learning and practicing various phases of home nursing and care of children. In beginning sewing classes, students toil to cut patterns and sew seams correctly. The advanced sewing class makes such items as suits, dresses, formals and sports wear. The home arts students learn home- making handicrafts such as knitting and cro- cheting. Page twenty-five

To start a typical school day off mu- sically, Cecil Havens, band director, gives much attention to each person who wishes to participate in the many activities of the band. One of the newest of these activities was their presence at the Indiana State Fair Band Day. The majorette team, also sponsored by Mr. Havens, works closely with the band. Chosen from the choir are two ensembles, the madrigal, directed by Mr. Fleck, and the girls' ensemble, directed by Mrs. Virginia Smith. George Amends joined the Music Depart- ment the second semester to reorganize the orchestra. These musical groups, composed of 222 members, are in great demand for school and community programs. Classes Stress Value of ound Body-Mind This model being shown to a safety and health class by Wendell Roberts is one of the many teaching aids available for use by students in the Health Department. Physical Education plays an important part in every freshman's life. This course not only develops the physical being, but also develops many skills, abilities, and de- sirable health habits. Physical Education helps the individual attain the responsibili- ties of leadership, develops fellowship, and a pleasing personality. The Physical Education boasts an enrollment of 327 students and is, for the girls, a one-half credit course integrated with Health. The boys, on the other hand, take Physical Education for one whole year and receive one full credit. Department One, two, three, fourg one, two, three, four, from sit-ups to deep knee bends, physical education classes exercise daily to keep physically fit. Every sophomore boy is required to include in his schedule safety and health. Wendell Roberts, safety and health instructor, directs the sopho- more boys in this course. First aid is included in this course, and is necessary for graduation. Two awarded students successfully com- credits are pleting the full year of safety and health. Health, Education, which is integrated with Physical is required for the freshman girls. This course is under the direction of Miss Sarah Shute and one-half credit is awarded to each girl concluding this course. The Health and Safety Department boasts an enrollment of 335 students.
