To the seniors it gives a shiny new coin to spend in life . . . a high school diploma, their reward for a four-year-job well done. From them it takes the fun they had while learning to work together, the Friday night sock hops, the County Tourney and Sectionals. For the underclassmen it brings their goal a step closer. It's the beginning of new and deeper friendships, greater responsibilities and more good times. To the faculty and administration '1958 gives 169 new graduates in which to take pride and 939 underclassmen who need their help. All of this is 1958. Page sixteen dministration The Warren Central administration consists of Edward Cuddy, principal, Obert Piety, dean of boys, and Mrs. Maude Siebert, dean of girls. The duties of this group extend into all school activities and problems which arise during the year, as well as the general administrative responsibilities. Numerous problems, both adminis- trative and student, cross the desks of this trio every hour of the day. Keeping a family of nearly 1200 individuals happy and busy and yet learning is a full time job. These three administra- tors try to attend all school functions in addition to their daily responsibilities. Edward H. Cuddy is the newest member of XVarren's administrative staff. Mr. Cuddy, for- merly vice-principal of Bloomington High School. became Warren's principal only this year. He is Warren Central's third principal. Among his many other responsibilities Obert Piety, War- ren's dean of boys, is in charge of all class scheduling. Mr. Piety has been at Warren for three years. English Stresses Reading, Writing, Speaking kills Warrengs English Department boasts the largest enrollment 1,077 students of any of the various departments in- cluded in the schoolgs curriculm. For students who have difficulty with their English, reading and remedial Eng- lish were offered. These special courses extended a helping hand to 113 students. Journalism I developed intelligent news- paper readers and taught students the purpose and appreciation of writing with exactness. OWL and WIGWAM staffs offered practical application of journalistic skills. A general speech course provides the fundamentals of public speaking. Debates, after dinner speeches, radio announcing and introduction speeches arc all given a try in the speech class at Warren. These students seem to be enjoying a debate. Included in this depart- ment are classes in freshman guidance, United States history and government, which are all required for every student. Besides the re- quired courses are elective classes in family living and world history. To help keep history and government stu- dents informed about world affairs, these classes subscribe to three daily newspapers. Government students also receive Our Times, weekly current events magazine. By learning more about themselves through the extensive testing programs in guidance, freshmen are better able to plan their remain- ing three years of high school work. Family living prepares Warren seniors to cope with the problems they will have to face in their future home lives. Robert Carey's U. S. History class is illustrating the fact that maps, books, and newspapers are necessary articles in keeping up with historical events that have taken place in the past, and in the present. The study of mathematics not only prepares stu- dents for future vocations and for college, but it also requires that the students employ the use of good reasoning power. At Warren, each student is required to take at least one math course. Seven hundred and ninety-six students were en- rolled in the algebra, plane geometry, advanced alge- bra, college algebra, solid geometry, and trigonometry courses which were offered at Warren Central this year. During 1957-58, 640 students were enrolled in practical science, biology, chemistry and physics. In one year the science department spent 35425.34 on test tubes, skeletons, chemicals and other scientific equipment. Speed and accuracy are the key words of this department, and only through constant drill and practice can these be accomplished. Bookkeeping students had never before realized how two little words, debit and credit, could be such a pain in the neck. While the typists try to unscram- ble the alphabet that lies before them in a maze of keys, the shorthand students try to master the peculiar language of loops and lines, which was devised by Mr. Gregg. In beginning sewing classes, students toil to cut patterns and sew seams correctly. The advanced sewing class makes such items as suits, dresses, formals and sports wear. The home arts students learn home- making handicrafts such as knitting and cro- cheting. Page twenty-five ROBERTS, WENDELL Health and Safety, Indiana Central Col- lege, B.S. Physical Education plays an important part in every freshman's life. This course not only develops the physical being, but also develops many skills, abilities, and de- sirable health habits. Physical Education helps the individual attain the responsibili- ties of leadership, develops fellowship, and a pleasing personality. The Physical Education boasts an enrollment of 327 students and is, for the girls, a one-half credit course integrated with Health. The boys, on the other hand, take Physical Education for one whole year and receive one full credit. Department One, two, three, fourg one, two, three, four, from sit-ups to deep knee bends, physical education classes exercise daily to keep physically fit. Every sophomore boy is required to include in his schedule safety and health. Wendell Roberts, safety and health instructor, directs the sopho- more boys in this course. First aid is included in this course, and is necessary for graduation. Two awarded students successfully com- credits are pleting the full year of safety and health. Health, Education, which is integrated with Physical is required for the freshman girls. This course is under the direction of Miss Sarah Shute and one-half credit is awarded to each girl concluding this course. The Health and Safety Department boasts an enrollment of 335 students. hop Teaches Boys Industrial GKnow-How, Many, many courses are offered at Warren but perhaps the various industrial arts courses are among the most interesting for Warren boys. In the several shops the boys may extri- cate their talents into whatever phase they are best suited. Each of the courses offered, if taken for two semesters and passed satisfac- torily, will add two credits toward a boy's graduation. Me- chanical drafting may also be taken by juniors and seniors, but architectural drafting is made available only to seniors. This year 460 boys participated in practical application in different phases of shop work. Many of the boys undoubtedly have opened the door to their career and many also have probably discovered that their talent does not lie in this field. ix Y fi YQ Q 3 . sl :if li fi ie? lie Q. gi ss, , Q Ee,,ij5q xi is X 53 XJ . The old adage, Latin is a dead language', doesn't seem to hold true at Warren. The enrollment in Latin is' the largest of the foreign languages. Latin not only gives the pupil a knowledge of a foreign language, but. helps him with English. Linguists Study Verbs Plus Countr Customs If you are a student of a foreign language, you probably never have your translation done and are always studying vocabulary words. There are approximately 215 students en- rolled in the foreign language department. The largest department is Latin with an en- rollment of 146. The Latin Department has three main events during the year. New Latin students are initiated by taking the Trip through Hades. Later in the year, students may volunteer their services and be sold in the Slave Sale. Everyone enjoys the Floralia Page twenty-eight season which brings beautiful spring flowers and delicious candy. On Pan American Day, the Spanish classes present an annual program. This year the Spanish students took a trip to Chicago for a week-end. The French classes seem to be steadily growing. Now in their second year, they have an enrollment of thirteen. This year the French students had two men from France visit their class. The Frenchmen compared the American way of living with their own. This year the Main Office staff, consisting of fifteen girls, one boy, Mrs. Theodora Pfister and Mrs. Mary Jane Deer, filed 2,210 schedule cards, enrollment cards and excuses. They delivered mes- sages and notices, ran off about 2,400 sheets of paper each day on the ditto machine, stored sup- plies, sold tickets to the games, sorted the mail, recorded the grades on permanent records and gave out general information. There are files of perma- nent records dating back to 1924. On the average, 150 telephone calls come in each day. Without this central office and the help of those who Work in it, Warren would literally fall apart. The Warren Central cafeteria serves on the aver- age of 400 pounds of potatoes, 36 gallons of green beans, 50 heads of cabbage, 12-15 gallons of fruit, 40-45 pies, 1,000 individual sandwiches, 10 dozen doughnuts, 16 dozen twinkies and cup cakes and 69 gallons of milk per day. Our average grocery bill is from 31,700-52,000 per week. For ten years, Mrs, Mary Jane Deer has been Warren Cen- tral's school secretary. Until january of 1958 she has had only student help to assist her in the main oflice. Without her help, Warren would be at a loss. GBehind the Scenes Workers? Under the supervision of Morris Campbell, 'S 8 class sponsor, the senior class sponsored many fund-raising projects to bolster their treasury. Selling shakers at the county tourney, sponsor- ing a disc jockey dance, selling taify and fruit cakes were among the activities that raised money for the prom at the Medical Center and the after-graduation dance at the Riveria. Through the government classes the seniors ordered their cards and invitations for gradua- tion and were measured for their caps and gowns. The Senior Council worked diligently with the faculty to make '58 the best year pos- sible. Morris Cnmpbell, senior class sponsor, is measuring jim Meunier for his graduation cap. This year's seniors decided on caps and gowns of white dacron for the girls and blue cot- ton for the boys. Although they brought a profit of only 513, the shakers provided a good excuse for shaker parties. Vcraiean Steinbrook, Gloria Cecrlc, Kenny Tobias, Bonnie Strom, F. D. Miller and Kay Alexander gather around the shaker box. Page ninety-three uniorfi refierue c arm ringa or coming Page ninety-four geal' . .
