Warriors Break Jinx, Gain 0-O Deadlock In Opener The Warriors traveled to Roosevelt Stadium for their traditional season opener with Southport. The hosts were defending county champions, having scored ten straight victories the year before. The Warriors had gained but two wins and one tie in competition since 1936. Both lines played brilliantly. Southport estab- lished a first down on Warren's one-foot line in the fourth quarter but were then stopped cold. An earlier Car- din al touchdown bid was ended by Jack Burton's interception on the four-yard line. Mastery Over Visiting Tigers ls Retained The Warriors opened their home season, winning, 30-6, in the third of a series with Greenfield's Tigers. Warren had previously won by scores of 27-O and 42-6. Sophomore Shirey stole the show with an 82- yard runback of the kickoff following Greenfield's fourth-quarter score. The Tigers had scored following a blocked punt, but the game was already beyond recall. Charles Huffman scored twice, once after pulling in a wobbly pass originating from the Warrior 48. jack Burton and Wayne McCord also added six-pointers. Warriors Besmirch Champ's Record With 7-7 Draw The Warriors were next called upon to stop county championship-bound Ben Davis. The Giants were to complete their first unbeaten season, but the Warriors blotted their record before a near-capacity home crowd. A third-quarter pass play sent the Giants ahead,7-0. But Quarterback Huffman was clicking with his passes, finally hitting Bill Henke in the end zone. The Warriors outplayed the champs most of the way, throwing up a solid defense, outdowning them, 6 to 2, and intercepting five passes while Huffman completed 4 of 10 himself. Flashes' Passing Attack Fails To Stop Warriors Warren, never a loser to Franklin Township in their post-war rivalry, notched another victory, 19-O, on the Flashes' gridiron despite the potent passing of Franklin's Phil Wampler, who passed for nine first downs during the evening. The game was still young when Bob Hogan scooted through center for five yards and six points. Before the half was over, Wayne McCord had pulled in a stray pass and raced back 40 yards for an- other TD. jack Burton had an even longer journey for his score, racing 50 yards off tackle in the third period. N , - A S , 't f .- - V . - my N.. n Charles Huffman, 84, lugs the ball while pursued by three Noblesville players. Harold McGuire s sprawled on the ground and Bill Hannah, 95, is pictured in the background. Surprising Hornets Exfinguish County Tifle Hopes The unbeaten skein of the Warriors came to a premature end when Beech Grove produced a 6-O upset. It was the first loss ever to the Hornets and ended a hope for a 1950 county championship. After a scoreless deadlock in the first half, Beech Grove took the second-half kickoff and scored before relinquishing the ball. Two successive Hornet passes accounted for a total of 41 yards and six points. Warren later fumbled away several promising counter drives. Small But Speedy Bears Score 18 -7 Victory The Warriors bowed next to their old rivals, Lawrence Central. The small, fast-moving Lawrence hack- field romped through gaping holes in the Warren line. An intercepted pass led to the Bears' first touchdown by Gar Walsmith. The tribe yielded to another score when a bad punt rolled out on the Warrior 33. With the score 18-O, Huffman launched some precision fourth-quarter passing. The drive started from the one-yard line. He connected seven of eight times, and the Warriors had their only points. Unbearen Noblesville Adds To Deferance Noblesvil1e's Millers, one of the three unbeaten, untied teams in the state in 1950, almost saw their streak cut short by the Warriors, but prevailed, 25-12. It was the last home game for nine seniors on the team. Quarterback Charles Huffman and Halfback jack Burton combined their talents for a pair of touchdowns, Burton took a handoff from Huffman in the opening minutes for the first score and then pulled in a pass heaved by the Quarterback in the third period. Revenge-Minded Howe Annexes 48-0 Victory Howe's Hornets proved they were anxious to forget about the 13-O upset dealt them by Warren in 1949. Leo Ahearn, who had missed a sure chance to land a position on the all-city team because of an injury, was back in old form at halfback. He just missed scoring Howe's first of seven touchdowns when tackled just short of the goal line but had latereled to JackMelli who scored. Howe had far too much power, but in the all-time series between the two schools, Warren has gained 4 victories and one tie in in eight starts. The pessimists were patting themselves on the back when t.he Warriors picked up a 10-game losing streak left over from the 1949-'50 nightmare and extended it to 19 straight before Pike was finally beaten, 52-48, The jeers of the skeptics choked in their throats when three more victories were added to the record in the last mont.h. Even Ben Davis and Cathedral had difficulty forcing a weak smile when they gained close decisions in county and sectional toumeys, respectively. Two other powerful city teams, Broad Ripple and Washington, were all but upset during the Warriors' renaissance. In April, it was announced that Coach Ralph Clevenger would not rctum next year to the coaching job he had held since 1936. Despite the won-lost record, followed' by this surprising news, there were several cheerful aspects to the 56350111 In the first place, senior Bob Hage lapped up many venerable Warren scoring records, some of which had been aging like fine wine since they had been set by the players of Mr. Walter Mowrey's starstudded teams ofthe l92O's. Secondly, the Warriors snapped their losing streak against their old rivals, Lawrence Central. The Bears were county finalists in 1951, but on February l0t.h, the Warriors gained sweet revenge for past defeats, by embarrassing Gar Walsmith and Co. on their home floor, 55-45. However, the brightest aspect of the season was the promising outlook for the future. In addition to Hage, the team was to lose only two lettermen - forward Roger Oertel and reserve guard Warren Sprunger. Neither Oertel or Sprunger had landed a position on the varsity until their senior year, and both came through impressively, expecially during the last half of the season. Other members of this year's varsity, who happily enough, will be back next year include juniors Wayne McCord, Bill Henl-ce, john Wiese and john Prangeg and sophomores Cedric Ransom, Jim Fish and Don Bnme. However, some of these boys may be hard-pressed to hold their positions because Coaches Paul Payne and Vaughn Wood of the reserve and fresh- man teams, respectively, came up with some top-notch prospects. These are the boys who will write the next exciting chapter in Warren Central basketball history. Warren's other rivals in county basketball, Franklin Township and Southport, saw their strong '51 teams wiped out by graduation. And so the Warriors are ready to move back into the spotlight, and soon the local gym will again be jammed to capa- city as it was when Warren had its last great teams in 1947 and 1949. The 1951 senior class will not be able to share personally in any future triumphs on the basketball floor. But many of our number will be standing around the bonfire which will be blazing at 901 North Post Road on Saturday night, january 18. 1952 to help cheer - THE 1952 MARION COUNTY CHAMPIONS. Wait 'till next year the unfaithful droned as the Warriors prepared what was expected to be a futile attempt to defend their Marion County championship at Washington High School, April 25th. The Tribe had copped seven consecutive county titles since 1944, but all those who had scored points for the locals in the 1950 meet had graduated. However, Coach Walter Mowrey, who always figures his team will lose anyway, was no more pessimistic than usual as the meet opened on awindy, rain afternoon at Washington. A fifty mile an hour headwind rac- ed out of the southwest, blowing the high hurdlies about like toothpicks, and intermittent billows of dust and drops ofrain swept through the uncomfortable crowd and the assembled tracksters. It was this time that the upstart underclassmen of the Warriors chose for their moment to shine. lt was an uphill battle all the way. The Warriors pulled into a surprising lead as George Reilly and Roger Oertel raced to surprise victories in the mile and 440. But the heir apparent to the C0unty title, Ben Davis, was keeping pace although Bill Black and Carter Collins added blue ribbons in the pole vault and the 220. The Warriors trailed Ben Davis, 30-29 before the mile relay and 36-33 after that event. Then the victory came almost too easily. The half-mile relay Pi, team, anchored by .swift Carter Collins, swept to' a second place ,pg 2 finish in the half-mile relay and added the.s1x points needed .for a .. 39-36 victory. In the same event, Ben Davis staggered in an igno- if minious seventh. Q ' ' vu r .-js, f' w,..r-- And so the surprised crowd filed out of the darkening field. All I 'N that was left now was the rising wind, and a drenching rainsto, 1 - which followed in the darkness. There was also an echo - an echo 'of 5, p , cheers being given to s spirited group of underclassmen - not a 4 X great team perhaps, but a champion nonetheless. I . We could have said to an elderly man, he is approaching sixty-one, or to the Senior Hon- or Society sponsor, or the Senior Council sponsor, or even the Senior Class sponsor. We could have said to a teacher, he certainly is that. But of these, patience pictures him best. Patient in his studies and work. ln 1912 he entered Moores Hill Col- legeg in 1948, he attended Butler University Extension. ln between times he spent fifteen school years in colleges and universities, gathering an A. B. and M. A. degree in passing. Patient with the students. Since he started at Warren in 1930, he has been an aid to the students. He aids them in the government and eco- nomics that he teaches and in the organizations he sponsors. 1-ie has aid- ed Warriors to go to college with a scholarship. His thirty-eight years in the field of education testifies to this bachelor's sincerity and patience. Because of these things and many others We, the Senior Class of 1951, dedicate our Annual to Mr. Fred L. Pierpont SEWELL, Bill R. R. 9, Box 456 SHARP, Max 2239 N. Leland SHANK, Eva Ann 2515 N.
