NINETEEN HUNDRED FIFTY A Publication Of WARREN CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL Indianapolis, Indiana atcacvicC — This Wigwam has been edited and published in hopes that it will help recall many friendships and achievements during the past year. W ' e, the staff, hope this annual will be among the most cherished memories of high school days, not only for the seniors of 1950 but for all students who possess this book. Editor s Note: This book contains very little text and should be evaluated in this manner: (1) The book is a pictorial production. (2) Pictures tell a clearer story. (3) The hope of the staff is that inglancing through this annu- al you may remember many of the pleasant events of the past school year. 37 JdS W e.S ‘Dedication — The Wigwam staff wishes to dedicate this annual to the mem- ory of Mr. Clyde C. Nice who met his untimely death in August, 1949. Mr. Nice came to Warren in 1945 as a journalism and English teacher. In addition to his regular teaching duties he was spon- sor of the Owl and the Wigwam and was public relations director. Although he was associated with Warren for such a brief time, all those who knew him and worked with him will long remember this fine man. His understanding and tireless efforts on behalf of the student body and the school endeared him to all. Advisory Board Mr. C. E. Eash, Principal Mrs. Myrtle Rodden, Assistant Principal Mr. Sydney K. Neil, Sponsor Editor-in-Chief Don Jackson Associate Editor Joyce Hancock Business Editor Billie Alger Subscription Editors Bob ] or dan and Claudette Wise Senior Editor Dolores Gumberts Assistant Joan Buckley Activities Editor Miriam Dorrel Assistant Walter Curran Feature Editor Barbara Blowers Underclass Editor ] acquelin Franklin Assistant Jean Ashley Oa% ' P’lwci feaC To pupils, former pupils, parents and teachers, greetings; and to the Wigwam staff, congratulations for a job well done. I am happy for the opportunity to convey a message by way of the Wigwam. One of the interesting annual events in the years of the beginning of our school was the troop move- ments from Fort “Ben” to Camp Knox for summer manoeuvres. This movement took place in the month of April. The return was always made in September after the opening of school. Usually the vanguard made its appearance at about eight in the morning and the rearguard passed our grounds about three or four in the afternoon. The officers on these movements were mounted, the vehicles were horse-drawn, and the enlisted men marched. It was customary on these days to have lengthened intermissions; sometimes classes were dismissed in order that we might be able to see the troops “go marching by.” It was really a big event. From Fort “Ben” to Camp Knox was a ten day move. Later, when paved highways replaced dirt roads motor vehicles made the trip in four hours. Today, our faster planes can travel the distance in ten min- utes. The marked change in speed of travel indicated in the time reduction from a ten-day march to a ten- minute flight is illustrative of the momentous changes that have taken place in many areas of human ac- tivity in the past twenty-five years, the lifetime of the school. Closely related to these changes affect- ing human life have been the prosperity of the twenties, the great depression of the thirties, the greatest of all wars in the forties, and the subsequent inflation of the present. In spite of the many things that tended to disrupt and hinder the progress of many institutions, our school prospered. The credit for this belongs to parents and teachers and boys and girls who during these years never lost sight of desirable goals, who clung steadfastly to the things that are good, who weathered the trying periods through which we passed, and who adjusted themselves intelligently to sud- den and momentous changes. My congratulations to all of you, for you have been responsible for the growth and successful devel- opment of our school. My sincere thanks to all of you, for you have made my twenty-six years of principal- ship happy years - happy years for me and Mrs. Eash. Sincerely, C. E. Eash. event cp - ix tyeci’Ki o-l eivice Last January marked Warren ' s twenty-sixth year of service - service not only to her students but also to the community. During these years countless improvements have been made and many more are planned. Mr. C. E. Eash, our principal, has led the school in its advance since the opening day, January 15, 19 25. Two other teachers have been with the faculty since Warren ' s founding. They are: Mrs. Myrtle Rodden, vice principal, and Mr. Walter Mowrey, athletics. Through the tireless efforts of the administration and the efforts of all the teachers, past and present, War- ren has become the successful institution of learning that we attend today. This year ' s enrollment of over a thousand far overshadows the two hundred and sixty-two pupils of the first year. Since that time our school has made steady and rapid progress. In 1933 Warren was honored by being rated the only Marion County first-class commissioned high school, with the exception of the city schools. In 1942 Warren received the honor of becoming a member of the North Central Association. Opportunities for learning, other than the three s - readin ' , writin ' , and ' rithmetic - have been greatly de- veloped. Today, when the need for a well rounded education is so great, the many and varied courses offered at Warren provide boundless possibilities for the aspiring student. The new distributive education course is a pro- gressive step toward bridging the gap between high school and business for those students not contemplating college. Warren has grown in size as well as in curriculum. In 1936 the new wing was added to the building, housing classrooms, shops, offices, and a modern gymnasium. The extension to the cafeteria was completed in 1946, and this year six new classrooms were added - two of these to accommodate the overflow if grade school chil - dren in the township. One of the most prominent mediums of school and community service is the school paper. The Warren Owl has been published bi-weekly since the first year. First place ratings have been received by the Owl from press associations for the past four years. The Parent-Teacher Association has developed steadily along with the school. By sponsoring the dancing classes, the canteen, the Easter Sunrise Service, the senior party, and other activities, this organization serves the school and community to a great extent. It has been successful in developing a valuable relationship be- tween the students, parents, and teachers. A reputation for clean playing and good sportsmanship has been maintained by the athletic department throughout the years. Various teams and individuals have brought honor to Warren on many occasions. The music department, both vocal and instrumental, is one to be very proud of. Although there was no band or orchestra the first year, there was a chorus, and since the band was organized in 19 28, it has received first place ratings in competition with high schools throughout the state. The choir is also an outstanding service organization. This group of fifty-eight voices has provided entertainment for many events throughout the school year. After reviewing the progress made in the past, we of Warren Central, feel certain that this school is no w ap- proaching an even greater future in the fields of education and community service. Mr. Paul (Peanuts) Payne was the assistant foot- ball coach and reserve coach. When the entire first team from the 1948 season graduated, much remorse and wringing of hands ensued. These were wasted tears, however, as the grid- men finished the season with a 4 won, 2 tied and 2 lost record. This dropped them into a third place tie with Decatur in county competition. The Warrior ' s county record stood at 2 won, 1 lost and 1 tied. Ben Davis lacked very few bonus points of also entering the third place tieup. Southport claimed first place laurels with a clean slate. Lawrence, who came in second, had their record spoiled by the tribe ' s 6-6 tie. Top notch performers showed up throughout the year. Ernie Miedema was chosen to Joe Adam ' s all county team. Other linemen received honorable men- tion. One of these was Glen Brown who was ineligible until the Lawrence game and played only a few minutes in this contest. The first game of the year was held here with Southport who won 18 - 0. This was the fifth game in this series to terminate with that score. Greenfield came here the next week and was defeated 43 - 0. The reserves scored 18 of these points as they played most of the last half. The Warriors traveled to Ben Davis for the following tilt. This was a hair-raiser, with both teams playing the breaks which came thick and fast. Walt Curran clinched the contest with a last period worker to end the game 19- 13 in favor of Warren after trailing 13 - 12. Franklin Township fell victim next 40 - 6. The pass defense clicked well during this fracas as the Flashes depended heavily on their aerial attack. Charlton at Plainfield ended the winning streak under the hot afternoon sun with a 6 - 6 tie. Both scores were made in the third period. Lawrence was riding high at this point and was favored heavily as they came to Warren the next week. The tribe was keyed to a high pitch and re- versed the situation from the preceeding year and deadlocked the contest at 6 - 6 . Howe crowned their football queen at the next game which displayed the best defense of the season. Warren played the breaks and rode to a 13-0 win. The Broad Ripple game which was postponed to this date from earlier time of the season ended things. Ripple trampled the tribe 33 - 0 on their home ground. The seventeen varsity boys pictured are: (left to right) England, Forsythe, J or- dan, Miedema, Coates, Holz- hausen, Oertel. The season got off to a good start with a 29-2 6 win ov- er New Winchester and a 39-34 triumph over Ben Davis. Both of these games prov- ed very interesting seeing that during both contests the tribe came back to overcome a 10 or 15 point deficit to win. The next fray was not so encouraging. Warren’s crew was swamped by Tech’s green wave 50-26. The following week Manual added to the deterance with a 41- 38 beating. Faces lit up again when the Warriors tripped Decatur 45-33 with a 19 point third period after trailing the first half. It was the first time the team was called upon to play a possession game, however, they froze the ball effectively and clinched the contest. The next three games were lost by an average of nine points to Beech Grove, Lawrence and Southport, respectively. The exact scores for these contests were: Beech Grove 42 - Warren 33; Lawrence 52 - Warren 44; Southport 53 - Warren 34. Traveling to Pike Township, Warren subdued the Red Devils to the tune of 61- 42. This was the year’s widest margin of victory. At the next encounter Crispus Attucks took it upon themselves to settle the Warrior’s hash with a 49-30 walloping. This brings us to county tourney time. The tribe’s first game was a hair-raiser with Ben Davis. Bob Hage’s pivot shot which provided the one point margin was in the air as the final gun went off. Southport eliminated the Clevenger men in the second round 49-39. Losses came thick and fast from here on. Speedway came out on the big end of a 39-37 score on January 28, and January 29 Washington took the tribe for a 48—41 ride. Greenfield then dished out a 56-36 beating to the Warriors. Franklin Township, Broad Ripple, Lawrence, for the second time and Howe took home the respective bacon 41-28, 69-28, 30-28, and 51-46. On the whole the team appeared as a classy, ball-hawking congregation who sorely needed height. At the season’s start the boys employed a comeback last half with some success. The end of the season saw a team that went hard the first half and slackened the pace afterward. If it hadn’t been for this pace slackening the crew might possibly have con- quered Tech, whom they drew in the first round of the sectionals. However, Tech took the sectionals and advanced to a regional that also contained Speedway and Franklin Township. Only senior student mana- ger this year was Rolla Dar- inger. Warren dropped the game to the section- al champs by the score of 56 to 36. Leading cheers for the athletic teams was the job of Hel- en Armstrong, J im Wilson, and Jean Ashley. Helen led cheers for the reserve team for one year and the varsity team one year, while Jim was varsity cheer leader for two years. J ean- nie received a white sweater this year for four years of ser- vice. Warren ' s cheer leaders received able assistance from little five-year-old Stevie McClintic, who was their first mascot.
