'L fn n Lest We Forget On January 15, 1925, students and teachers began flocking into a new building for Warren Township High School at the corner of East Tenth and the Post Road. The grounds and building for this new school covered nineteen acres. Mr. C. E. Eash, our present principal, took the posi- tion in 1925 and has held it ever since. War- ren's first year saw an enrollment of 262, a teaching staff of 11, and a graduating class of 21- Since that time Warren has risen to the high- est standard obtainable by a school: a member of the North Central Association. Let's look back over the years and see what has made Warren what it is today. We still have three of those eleven teachers who started Warren on her upward trend. They are Mr. C.E. Eash, Mrs. Myrtle Rodden, and Mr. Walter Mowrey. They have contributed, and are still contributing, their services to the bet- terment of the school and community. When the original building was erected itwas thought adequate for the enrollment that was an- ticipated, and at that time it was. But in eleven short years the students outgrew theold building, and in 1936 a new building was erected at the rear of the original one. This new build- ing cost approximately S210,000.00 and includes classrooms, shops, laboratories, and a large, modern gymnasium. In 1931 Warren Central was rated as the only Marion County first-class commissioned high school, with the exception of the Indianapolis schools. Many of the social events that started way back in Warren's baby days have now become tra- dition. Among these are the annual Mother's Tea, Father and Son Banquet, Athletic Banquet, Spring and Fall Concerts, and Choral Festivals, and the Christmas and Spring Dances. Organizations have grown as rapidly as the school itself. The two outstanding ones are the Warrenette and Hi-Y Clubs. These two organiza- tions take a leading part in the social activ- ities throughout the year. The Sunshine Club, for the Freshman girls, is also an active organ- ization. The athletic department has brought honor to Warren's halls on many occasions, and Warren is noted for clean playing and good sportsmanship. The music department never fails to bring home its share of awards in the annual contests, both vocal and instrumental. Now in this year of 1948 as we look back over the years and realize what this great institu- tion of learning has accomplished, we sincerely hope that it will continue its indispensable job of educating tomorrow's generation. For an edu- cated country is a free country, and only in a free land can the Wwarrensn of the world flour- ish, and the people of the world become better because of them. -4- pqf, 1 f . - J.-., ff? - V . C569 21 Class of '48 Well, here we are -- the seniors of 1948. Hasn't it been fun, kids? Six years of working and playing together within the walls of dear, old W.C.H.S. We've had our ups and downs, our good times and bad, our triumphs and defeats, but looking back on them, we know that they were the happiest years any group of high school stu- dents could ask for. Will you ever forget the basketball games, the Hi-Y wiener roasts, those walks around study hall, and all those super dances. The social side of our lives at Warren has been full to the brim, and, oh! what fun. But these activities had a twofold purpose, for while they brought us good times, they also strengthened our charac- ters and taught us how to get along with Wthe other fellowu. Our class has had a whole regiment of out- standing students and leaders. Some of them ex- celled scholastically, while others achieved a measure of fame in sports, dramatics, music or journalism. All of us, at times, have assumed the role of cooperative followers. Members of our class in the music department have appeared in two operettas and many contests, our athletes have successfully participated in all fields of sportsgand all-around individual achievement has brought increased honor to the name of Warren Cexitral throughout the city and state. What of our work in the classroom? We have invested our time and energy in furthering our education. The dividends from our investment are an enlightened mind, a better ability to un- derstand our fellow-men, and most important of all, an insatiable thirst for knowledge. There- in lies the key to our future success. But we must reminisce only briefly. Our true interest lies in looking ahead, in plan- ning and dreaming about our futures. In the years to come, we will find our classmates be- hind the executives' desks, administering to the sick, and rearing prospective students of War- ren Central. Why, someone may even go so far as to invent the better mouse trap. Though we know, of course, that the extent of our success de- pends upon our own endeavor, we shall never cease to be grateful for the start we were given at Warren. J. Gazing at this picture you undoubtedly recall the many achievements of this active organization, for now you are viewing the vocal section of the music department, the Warren Central senior choir. It has been a busy year, but the choir has shown through with outstanding results. One of the highlights of the year was the operetta, H.M.S. Pinafore given on March 12, 1948, under the direction of Miss Katheleen Hergt. Not a seat was empty duringthe ev- ening performance and from the time the gym lights dimmed and the curtain parted until the close ofthe last act it caused favorable comment from all. Here also recognition should go to Betty Dammrich, choir accompan1st,whose un- tiring efforts have helped Miss Hergt achieve these high honors in concerts, programs and contests. We haw ,alarm d and clfcrufczt The Madrigal group consisting of four graduating seniors and four sophomores all under the direction of Miss Kathleen Hergt pictured left to right are: Larry Crosley, Bob McClure, Joan Tossel, Joan Thomas, Donna AnnKinzel, Joyce Hancock, Don McClure and Mark Gale. As you now look at the familiar faces of the band members you will quickly recall the many times that this organi- zation provided wonderful entertainment for us. It made us 'mightyn proud the days they displayed their marching ability at several of the football games and judging from the contest results, we all are Hrubbing shoulders' ev- ery day with several prospective 'pros'. Much recognition for the band's high standing must go to Mr. Cecil Hav- ens and Mr. Paul Hamilton, whose fine work has given remarkable results. Through the talent and cooperation of the band, the memories of our basketball and football games have been made a little more vivid. It's annual concerts have also been well presented and have proven an enjoyment to the commun- ity. Visitors who have seen and studied our music department have been well impressed by the extent of the goals obtained and its marvelous supervision. Here also we find the twirlers who can't be overlooked for their exceptional activity. Carolyn Dickerson, drum ma- jorette should be congratulated for her splendid work in leading the band and her line of twirlers through diffi- cult manuevers during marching demonstrations. Here, also, we find many outstanding musicians whose blendings of tones has provided music for countless programs. In this section of the music department we find the string instruments. This addi- tion to the brass, woodwind and percussion families renders a delicate tone to the bold and daringqualities of the others. When Mr. P. Hamilton and Mr. C. Havens put them all together they have a masterpiece of a music portrait, which once heard cannot be forgotten. The orchestra with thirty-five members is smaller than its sister organiza- tion, the band, which has fifty members, but it deserves an equal amount of credit. Its past school year history has kept its reputation like the previous years as being one of the best orchestras in the surrounding territory. One of the highlights of the season was the four team tourney at Tech which the War- riors won. They easily tri- umphed over Decatur Central 40-28 andthen outlasted Frank- lin Twp. to win 49-44. In both the county and sectional the Warriors lost to the eventual champs. Speedway turned back Warren 33-28 in a county first rounder. Wash- ington sidelined the Warriors 57-48 after Warren had upset Shortridge 49-44. The picture on the right shows the tip off of the Law- rence Central game. Top left on the opposite page shows ac- tion in the first Washington game, which Warren lost 41-38. snug --.Q 2 n I 1 no 3 2 z , 4.... :B'.. ' ..f 'i' m - W K. , . 59?-j . . .... Eder Irvington 6767 5520 East Washington Stre As We mme Preface One score and three years ago our forefathers brought forth upon this campus a new high school conceived in ideals and dedicated to the prop- osition that all students are creat- ed equal. Although those weren't the exact words of Lincoln the meaning to us, the students of Warren Central, is quite clear. It is the purpose of this, your year book, to bring to you memories of the years gone by -- years that were spent in the class rooms of this -- your Alma Mater. As you thumb through the pages remember when Effie Bottema and Mar- garet Reilly won all of those 4-H awards -- Anita Prange won the na- tional D.A.R. contest and her trip to Washington -- Martin Williams was auditioned by Fabien Sevitsky -- and Betty Mowry won a W.C.T.U. award. It is our hope that as you glance o'er the familiar faces of your friends perhaps ten or twenty years hence you will fully realize how truly trivial were your high school trials and tribulations in compari- son with those you experience in la- ter life. Warren has watched many of the students, that pass through her por- tals for the last time as students, develop from flighty youngsters to mature men and women. Men and women ready to make their debut into the world -- ready to begin a whole new way of life. The future before them, the past behind, with many a sacred memory tucked away within the pages of this, the year book of '48. in flu' 5 d Table of Contents Page Preface .... , , 2 Administrators . . 3 Faculty .... , 4 School History . , 5 Seniors .... , 5 Activities . , 16 Informals . . . , 18 Class History . . , 22 Juniors .... , 23 Sophomores . , 26 Freshmen . . , 29 Eighth Grade . , 32 Seventh Grade . . . . , 35 Classrooms ....... . 38 Clubs and Organizations . . . 40 Senior Activities . . . . . 51 Sports ..... , , 55 Senior Farewell . , , 61 Allen County Pubhc Lrbrary 900 Webster Street PO B 2270 Fort Rayne, IN 46801-2270 af HIIUIWKI' gran 11 rl' Pope's Pure O11 1F0ut9S Statlon at Marliet F dl M lk Tires ' Batteries - Parts 00 ar et Groceries and Meats Ice Cream and Frozen Foods Magazines Meats and Groceries Notary Public P.
