Possibilities however are not a guarantee of a realization of the best. The good world in your lifetime will be about you and with you and for you to the extent that your generation and the generations immediately ahead of you and back of you are willing to be guided by basic principles that embody service and good will and love to and for all mankind. Your Principal 7 (bambu . . Our other dean, Mr. Fred Rode- beck, has been affiliated with Warren Central eighteen years. He is our present Dean of Boys and teacher of advanced book- keeping. Since a few boys often have the tendency to get on the wrong path, you can find Mr. Rodebeck in his office helping them. If you pass through the cafe- teria, you will find him busily working away. Oh! Yes! He buys much of our food. Mrs. Myrtle Rodden “Look! Here come our deans!” Mrs. Myrtle Rodden, Dean of Girls, has been with Warren Cen- tral for twenty-two years. She, at the present time, holds the office of vice-principal of our school. Our girls’ dean, who is a very pleasing and understanding per- son, is a very busy woman. ' ■■ Mi (But let ua, Acud, 13 f iiA, t neAMHP ' Once again another school year has come to the end, and another class has been graduated. Each year the seniors have a certain routine that they must follow, yet there are certain distinctions which have and will occur that make them all different. During the last generation, as we all know, the people did not have as many opportunities as we of today have. Many of them were not privileged to attend school for the World War I was in progress. Thus most of the young people were either fighting or helping at home. Another cause of non-schooling was lack of money and interest in the school. Con- sequently the completion of high school education came out of the first world war. Just about thirty years later another world war was fought. This time youths were able to attend school and also could help fight by gather- ing essentials as tin cans, iron, and grease. Having needed better and entirely different equipment, science has made possible more chances for us seniors to serve. Since the students of today have more interest in higher education, more interest in college degrees has resulted from this second world war. Also, resulting from this war, there have been many opportunities founded in the fields of medicine, in photography, in foods, and in the knowledge of using our rare elements for different and more useful pur- poses. Some of these advantages are not entirely for the best. For instance, the A-bomb. We, instead of using it for destructive purposes, should use it to serve humanity better. In the medicine field, many medicines have been compounded which bring quicker relief and help overcome some of the rare maladies. Food values were stressed. As the fighting members needed certain items to keep them strong, we at home learned how to use other foods and at the same time received the necessary nutritive value. Remember “opportunity only knocks once.” So as the world of today has given us seniors of ’47 more opportunities to learn, explore, and serve, we wish the succeeding seniors richer and more abundant opportunities for study and service. ibney, Jack Ignew, James Llbright, Vernon illen, William Lmos, George Fall, Richard Folkening, Irving Forsythe, Marjorie lnaijt i it - jytfl jthiA ■ dedkaiion. . Reading And Writin’ And Arithmetic Are Essential (1) Pauline Schaekel, Barbara Slentz, Carole Oertel, Jim Winters, and Bob Stev- ens are among the members of the Ger- man Class who are interested in the learn- ing of German phrases of time. Both the first and second year classes were held the second period, and must have kept Mr. Eash pretty busy. (2) A new class, World Geography was watched with interest by many people and received writeups in the Indianapolis papers as well as those in the Owl. Geography was studied from an economic point of view. Present-day problems were discussed to give students information which can be used in everyday life. (3) Mary Clark presses a jacket while Betty Gouker, Nita Gates, and Donna Goodrich sew and Carole Singleton helps Mary Bader fit a housecoat which she made in advanced clothing. (4) Speech was one of the busiest classes at Warren this year not only giving plays but speech contests and many other ac- tivities. Shown here rehearsing a play are Eddie Windle, Jack Fowler, Elaine Weddell, James Winninger, Kendrick Hatt, Myra Mahrling, Beverly Stanton, Rosemary Shepherd, Mary Bader, and Donna Goodrich. (5) Roland Pond, Leroy Hunter and Fred Baker are shown usine some of the rtJtlA ' jthaiJL. But — We Picked Up A Few Other Things Here An There machines in the shop class. (6) Ann Goold watches Dick Hon as he boils chemicals in making a test. Leland Reich is making a smoke screen, Eugene Reeves is stirring a mixture, Phil Krug pours HCL in a graduate, and Eddie Fredricks watches as Jim Curry makes a flame test, and Paul Sparks filters with suction in one of the advanced chemistry classes. How those chemistry classes stood those awful smells is beyond us, but they didn ' t seem to mind. (7) Click, clack, click, clack! As you wandered around study hall almost any period of the day you would hear this noise coming from Room 10. But never fear the room isn’t falling down. It’s only the typing classes pounding away at their “budgets.” Miss Townsend is shown here preparing the advanced typing class for their next assignment. (8) Bob Ste vens, Earl Bangle, Ray Bul- lock, Bill Schelske, Carlos Montgomery, Walt Frankhouse, James Barnett, Don Brune, Charles Bremer, and John Endi- cott work industriously over their draft- ing assignment. (Ed. Note. This in a posed picture, of course.) (9) Government is one of the required subjects. It helps pupils to understand their government and the way it is run. The little guy in No. 4 isn’t Nero cause by heck he said his name was Jack Fowler. Cowgirl Joan Powell, No. 5 says, “I like ’em wild.” Another daring horseman, Bill Harris, No. 6, reels off one of those Roy Rogers poses. ‘In the Good old winter time.’ Betty Folkening, No. 7, and a friend enjoy this winter sport. Let’s hear that motor roar. “Strike three . . . You’re out,” implies the husky chap in No. 17. It looks like Ralph Smith. ‘Open the Door Richard!’ Peggy Spriggs, No. 18, peeks between two giant pillars. No. 19 shows Pauline Hill trying to practice animal training or something. This beautiful hunk of a boy in No. 20 is Leonard Arnold. Goo! Goo! He must be frightened by the camera — just look at his hair. “Come on in, the water is nice and cold” says Ed Fredrick, No. 22, as he takes a dip in Lake Michigan. Is Dale Monroe proposing in No. 22 or just scratching Snook’s fleas? ‘Ah, yes, my Romeo.’ Don West and Jim Curry enact the scene as Bill Simpson and Ed Fredrick take the part of the supporting cast. l • 9 $ 7 . -vsvcultfi la g • Stilt psmhhuj jjutdk aJwjlva. jujl othsJv £a Joy Abney Ray Alexander Richard Alger Marjorie Anderson Roselyn Arbuckle John Armslrong Don Arthur Patricia Ashley Joan Baker Jesslyn Ball Joe Ballard Shirley Beaver Barbara Boren Jane Boynton Julia Brown Don Brune Ray Bullock Loislee Burtt Rosemarie Burtt Carl Cloud Phyllis Coffey Ivan Cordrey Joan Cornelius Don Cox Alice Curtis Robert Dahl Marjorie Davis Erwin Deerberg Robert Dollinger Beverly Dorrel Janet Duke Rodney Dunham Margaret Dunn ■HM v X 4 John Endicotl Belly Eytchison Mary Fecker Mary Fivecoal Roy Fleelwood Marjorie Folkening Waller Frankhouee 33 ti_, Qua, magic, halt, Yiiliah, flaccA. (2) Have you heard students going about gibbering mysterious incantations or discussing declensions (whatever those are?) If you have, don’t think we have a few inmates from a mental hospital enrolled, or a clan of witches plotting against the school. They’re just students from Miss Kinnison’s Latin class, trying to figure out their assignment. (3) “Clip ’im one,” “Atta boy,” “Slug ’im! !” Shouts ring out as interested spectators follow the flying fists, the dancing and ducking bodies. It’s Mr. Nolte’s fifth period Physical Fit- ness class, with Denzil Jones and Alan Miedema engaging in “a bit of fisticuffs,” which is one way of saying they’re having a good time at a typical boys’ sport. (4) Harolda Green, Leona Perkinson, Joy Abney, Irene McMahan, Joan Powell, and Betty Pressel seem to be hard at work in Mrs. Seibert’s Advanced Art class. Betty looks sat- CL L AOhlOlAA, Is It An Actuality Or Is It Posed For the Photographer? isfied (and justifiably so) with her painting of a little country church. (5) One, two. One, two. Touch your toes. Left hand. Right hand. Barbara Ready leads Miss Martin’s Physical Education class in a muscle-building exercise. (6) Tom Robling, Jimmy Morris, Joe Ballard, and Glenn Willets at work in the Warren print shop. (7) Ronnie Wimmer studies conscienti- ously, while Mike Koldyke rummages industriously through the files in Mr. Clevenger’s guidance class. Jimmy Wilson and Claude Forth are taking one of the aptitude tests given to the classes. (8) Mrs. Strieker and her fourth period Home Economics class conduct a luncheon prepared by themselves in the foods laboratory. These girls were often called upon to serve at luncheons, teas, and dinners taking place at the school. (9) While Lynn Stephenson and Russel Houze look occupied with the transit, John Prange looks knowing and Bob Schilling appears puzzled as they survey the motor on the table in the agriculture room. Julius Mithoefer looks preoccupied (could it be Lu- cille?) as Billy Hilton busies himself with a separate project. r BettV vw Geot« e e r o uise C0t dteV ;f ee s ?r °“ S i rs -;t v ion - % • S q £? • ns 1 ; otoo te %. ca e o1 , Ca oS revert ipP ee ese cate tne dies fl cet= upv C uo iWeS 6° t)eet to tia s Ut e id tea ete cVva tWia Bt Wtas totv e jon JjO Via ' tTcvets bat be en ‘Dtc’S- vve et a bea cata rt ' rtvPo rcvaa to Cta uoa pP e ? d eT bi ttea V « Kea e ea doa to oft tia no tfvey dJic pay Vttng rnn a dt c BeW be ta a e d gtnaa dett 0.5) tn Co u Vie BQt btt ee etas tty 3oaa tbeta t oa Cta Be tft nd rnet l V) ao) bent D° Ostaet nd ids Da vtd d s ca- va c otft eS Bsst OcaaS tba 0.11 bas e B.eaa a tftose t 9) cate tce ■yoa oa ot bvtd .Wet basy npt e tsW ' tbva co ' tne tYvS b©y m°a VJO poss Wta ot bo c 3 aa e tua bttas bvs°a nd y°a doafe d ? c ass Byte D eet 3oaa be s aa vtt Bat aP w y°a utftat ai) De geofet (2D vjb ete bea baay ties tne beaa b°y s 3 esst e aa , t ag e tea Bo ' y B eia e Via iet (But wait! 0 uA. qjypAjy, qjuidfL mpAeA. wddviii A , oMj, Jlbisminq, ” CujcUl. hJwvLdsxL bu. u A Halloween Parade in Irvington Carnegie Hall Haint Heard Nuttin’ Yet None of these musicians have enter- tained at Carnegie Hall but from a survey of the first places they have won and the listening appeal they have garnered, it is promising that some higher musical at- tainment is in the making. Annual Proves Most Elaborate Wigwam Ever Printed This is the most elaborate yearbook yet, to be composed for Warren students. Much can be said for the progress since the days when the yearbook was mimeo- graphed or run off on the school press. Predetermined estimates of the actual cost of production hovers near the thir- teen hundred dollar mark. The Wigwam, co-edited by Ken Tux- horn and Ann Goold, upper left, surpasses past editions not only in cost but also in style, design and size. A portion of the books were attractively finished with hard bound, imitation leather covers. Other Wigwam staff members include Lucille Williams, faculty; Doreen Sanders, senior section, and Betty McKenzie, un- derclassmen. Art work is accredited to Pat Eber- hart; activities, Margaret Higginbotham and Joan Powell; clubs, Jackie Kirby, and sports, Ken Tuxhorn. A different method of production other than the usual process of press printing has been used. This was adopted partly as an experiment and partly for financial reduction. The method used, called off- set printing, is a process of chemical transposition. Happy and jubilant were the boys after their Cathedral-section triumph as evidence in the upper right photo proves. Playing in the final game of the Indian- apolis Sectional and missing a trip to the regional by only 5 points at the hands of Southport is not the only new record the boys have unveiled. They scored a season total of 930 points, 169 more than a recent 761 high. In city competition, the locals annexed all but two of their hardwood foes. But these two surviving quintets, Washington and Broad Ripple, suffered defeat at the hands of the Warriors when the game counted most. Washington faltered 36 to 29 in the final game of the Holiday Tourney. This was the same day that Shortridge stood in the way of a blistering attack and fell victim, too. Broad Ripple tasted defeat in the semi-final round of the sectional. The 48 to 43 verdict came when the boys were at their peak and had already sent Howe and Cathedral to the showers. For four years we have been looking toward our graduation — thinking only of the end of school and not stopping to realize that graduation means goodbye. Only after it is so close to the end do we realize how much our high school days have meant to us — all of our friendships and associa- tions that we shall long remember, the classroom training we received, and all the activities which have given enjoyment. This education is only the beginning. All through our lives education will continue. We are now confronted with larger responsibilities and graver problems. All three, planning, prep- aration, and training, count in the Battle of Life. We must not just depend on the above three, but we must put our learnings to use for happy and successful lives. As we all know, success is never easy-— it is only through confidence and perserverance that it is achieved. We must tackle the problems that confront us, po matter how difficult they may seem. As we close the pages of this yearbook, we will also be closing the pages of our high school lives, but not forgetting our friends, teachers, and incidents that occurred.
