This nameless group was varied as to size, dress, ability, and nationality. These students were later to be known as the class of '36. Like all preceding classes we were given little or no recognition. YVe were trampled under foot and over-ruled by the upper classmen literally and figuratively. After one year of submission, being an aggressive people, we began to assert ourselves. ln our sophomore year we joined Dramatic Club, Glee Club, Hi-Y. and Girlsl Club. Some of the more socially inclined attended the all-school dances on Friday afternoons. ln the fall of 193+ our athletes showed merit and training in football and in basket ball. We began to feel the need of organization if we were really going to succeed that year's senior class. By popular vote we elected Joseph Viola, president, hlary Ellen Ostergard, vice-presidentg Aldean Rossman, secretary, and Kent Reading, treasurer. It was then necessary for us to choose our class insignia. XVirh what pride we hrst wore our class rings! YVe first showed to the public our dramatic ability when we produced the junior play, 'KA Peach of a Family. lt really was a peach of a play. Klany of our members rose from the ranks to take part in various school activities. such as The Dragon and The Draguneite. The junior-senior prom topped off an eventful year. VVith great expectation we looked forward to our senior year. VVC returned to school in the fall of 1935, full-fledged seniors. We had over- thrown the old regime and set up our own rule. As a result of the fall election we had a change of officers. William VValker was elected class presidentg hlary Ellen Ostergard, vice-president, Jean Blodgett, secretary, and James Kliller, treasurer. One of the outstanding events of the year occurred on the day when our football heroes dragged Jamestown's red and green in the dust for the first time in seven years. Our senior play showed great improvement in dramatic ability. The Green Ghosi was a big success and excelled all others. The Dragon came out, strikingly done in our class colors of black and white. The membership of the class had gradually decreased each year. There were many reasons for the competition against education, such as depres- sion, indifference, and love. Time passed quickly and events crowded in, Class Night, the junior-senior prom, and the Baccalaureate service -all led up to the grand climax, Commencement! With heavy hearts but happy memories, we ended our reign as a class. -JEAN BLODGETT, Historian. 38 CI ASS - PIQCDPI-II-CY llilj the prophet, Helenus of old, the power of divination was bestowed upon me by that immortal arbiter of the fates of men, the ruler of lofty Olympus, the supreme being to whom we mortals give the appellation of Jove. By my interpretations of the will of Jupiter, the omnipotent father, l may incur great wrath, but bear in mind that l am but the humble instrument that speaks the mind of the founder of our race. As l, careworn and abused by disgruntled humans, prostrate myself before my glowing charcoal braizier, l hear thundering in my ears the voice of him who is dreaded by all. The misty paths of the future are unveiled by a roseate gleam of light. l see many figures along the way. Some are near, others are farther along on the highways of life. l see ......... I see . . . . . . . A maestro, a short, dapper man in his middle thirties. He resembles Henry Busse of former days. That bustling personality is the one and only jimmy YVells. A very pretty girl in her early twenties with her charms all unheeded. Xvho? Bless my soul, can it be? It is Rita Guthrie, a nurse in a Chinese Red Cross hospital! A boy in a football uniform, being carried off a college gridiron after catch- ing a pass that won the game. That smiling hero is our own Bill VValkerl A woman in her middle forties, proudly displaying a gold medal from ll Duce for raising the largest family in ltaly. Can it be? It is Charlotte Knabbl A small, mild-looking man of about thirty-five. He is a much respected professor of physics. Believe it or not, l can see distinctly our own Kenneth Betts. A happy, smiling girl who has just been elected the prettiest girl on the campus. She is slimmer than the girl whom we knew in high school. Klary Ellen Ostergard weighs only one hundred fifteen pounds now! A woebegone young man in a strange land. He is nursing sore feet, which have been encased in army brogans several sizes too small. lVe always thought that Jim XIiller,s big feet would prove a blessing A radiant girl in her late twenties. She has just married the most eligible bachelor in her town. He has money, too! You're a lucky girl, Helen Davidson! A muscular fellow of twenty-eight. He is engaged to a young debutante whom he saved from drowning at Palm Beach. It's just like Byron iXIcKenzie, isn't it? A famous violinist of thirty-odd years. She is good-looking, too, for a violinist. UI owe it all to llr. Summersf' says Genevieve Faul. I see a famous basket ball team called The Fifi? ,U11xketeer.v. I recognize them as Eugene Campbell, Jack Lutz, Tony Notoro, Stanley Peterson, and Ray Tibbott. 39 CLASS PROPHIQCY Jeanne Hoppe Qmarried nowj as she is receiving the Pulitzer Prize for her revolutionary novel entitled, Frou: 131111 In lf1'or.vff. Two fatherly old gentlemen who have attained fame by founding cat and dog hospitals all over the world. They are those two publicfminded souls, Eugene Hedges and YVendell Lawson! Annabelle Lohnes and lfleanor Spe1'ry, in accordance with the dying request of Klr. Nason, have financed a school for stuttering and stammering. A happy young couple who have just christened their darling little son, Kent Jr. The man is Kent Reading, but 1 don't recognize his wife. Robert Jewell and Jane Speidel in the near future billed as The fllorl Gracef- fu! Bzzllrf Dmifers on Tour. Catherine Barnett Cat only twenty-five, to tell the truthj, advertised as the only circus strong woman who can wrap a steel bar around her manager's neck! A boxing ring in which a heavyweight is beating Joe Louis to a pulp. Louis Check is the hero! Two young women who have invented a type of lipstick that stays on in spite of everything. These benefactors of the human race are Helen Crosby and Lillian Hand. A man in his late fifties. It is Joseph Viola, who has been unanimously elected president of the 1. YV. VV. lncidentally, Gilbert, Buerkle is his right hand man. Jean Harkless and hlary Betty Trusler as prim old matrons in the Beckwith Home for the llentally Deficient. This home was founded by our old chemistry teacher, now long since gathered to his forefathers. Fred Tears and Greer Putnam. For years they have been foreign mission- aries, spreading the gospel in African lands. The very respectable lrish law firm of Anderson, Anderson, Anderson, and Punslcy. They are Arden, hlaurice, Robert, and last but not least. Harry! Three girls of college age who are traveling with Ted Shawnls troupe. l see Ardelle Johnson, Sally KIacDonald, and Rachel Klahaffy have been practicing. The two Bunk brothers, Joseph and VVilliam, still bunking together. This time it is in a Canadian logging camp. Two very old ladies. Are they thrilled! Frances Klclfvoy and Klonica Armstrong are taking their first ride on a rocket ship going to the moon! A very much patronized agency for the lovelorn. l canlt believe it! Yes, it is! Donald Duhlond and James Oberg are the proprietors! 40 LLASS PROPHECY Two pretty young ladies in Paris. Gene Burns and Lois Heath are manne- quins at La Salon Parisienne. Two august and imposing gentlemen. Stuart Dickson and Gerald Cochran are the baby senators from Pennsylvania! Well, are we proud! Two aged women. Life seems to have been a continuous strife for them. Well, maybe llfartha Larson and Betsy Kinnear will see the silver lining before they grow much older. William Albaugh and Helen Knight as collaborators, who at a late age have won the Nobel Peace Prize. A man of fifty, who has made a success in life through cheerfulness and hard work. We certainly give George lXIoran all the credit that is due him. A boy who is still a senior. He has just won a state scholarship. He cer- tainly worked hard enough in school to earn it. lfelford Johnson is the recipient. Several young women on a Co0k's World Tour who have stopped off at the South Sea lslands to learn how to dance. They seem to be getting the swing of it. These talented girls are Jean Blodgett and Ann Brown. What! Two of our heavyweights doing acrobatic cheerleading at dear old Purdue. Bob Cogswell and Bob Rowley are the men! Quentin Holt and Natalie Dockham are jerking sodas for our drugstore cowboys, James Boyer and Bill Duff. On a dark night, an eccentric old fellow with an armful of specimen bottles. It is Charles Burch, the famous hunter of the ferocious horse-hair snakes. By the way, Curtis Grundberg follows him around to see that he doesn't put his clothes on backwards! Everett Siefert and Billy Greenlee, world's champion pole vaulter and high jumper, respectively. It is rumored that they attained their skill by leaping international boundary fences about three jumps ahead of a posse. We don't believe it. Rhea llercier, the millionaire lady who is riding up Fifth Avenue in her new green Dusenberg car with Vernard Ilfellander as her chauffeur. Herman Hansen and Walter Roberts, who have gained a morbid satisfaction in life by becoming monks. They rejoice in wearing burlap and shaving with jack- knives! Not for me, thank you! Two very disgruntled men. Otto Lynch and Franklin Riggs joined the Navy to see the world. The poor souls were assigned to a submarine! Betty Gilson, holding a silver loving cup. She is a champion rolling-pin thrower. At fifty feet she was able to hit her dodging spouse nine times in ten. Betty Font was runner-up with eight times in ten. The trained husbands are Owen Lester and Darrell lX'Iiller. 4-1 CI AS.. - PQI M You would know peace, my dear? You find your thoughts unworthy, Your ambitions stifled, and your days The mere routine of living? Then, this advice: ln the middle of a long day WVhen the world presses in closely, Stretch luxuriously in your chair, And take a little time for dreaming To lessen the pain of reality And give expression to your soul. Reach out your arms to lifeg Push away frantic, grasping incidentals. Exile little cares from your mind, And appropriate some time for lovingg For loving broadens understanding And builds your dreams to castles. Then, set aside an hour for prayer That God, seeing fit, may grant your dreams. Though earthly cares clamor, shut your eyes, your ears your mindg And find with God and love and dreams your each desire You need but take the time. 4 JEANNE HOPPE. The Num' et Tunr, as it is called, has since risen high in the estimation of those interested in the work, and, we believe, will continue to gain publicity and popularity. A classical publication like this should be an important factor in a stu- dent's curriculum. Not entirely devoted to the rudiments of the language itself, it branches off into lighter veins, and is a continual source of pleasure to the reader. hluch credit is due our instructor, bliss Gilmore, for her unfailing help and advice in the publication of the paper. LATIN - CLUB HE Latin Club, which was organized eight years ago, has been each year an influential instrument in encouraging school spirit and co-operation among the students of the classical course. This year was no exception. Second, third, and fourth year pupils were eligible for membership. The official emblem was a becoming combination of the scroll and the olive branch, with a guard bearing the numerals of the class. Xleetings this year were diversified and enjoyed by all, Slides, which depicted Virgilys ilanfid, Roman life, the Appian YVay, the Catacombs, the life of Horace and of Caesar, were shown and accompanied by descriptive explanations by llliss Gilmore. Other features of the programs included word races, games, dramatic offerings, and the singing in Latin of favorite sacred and patriotic songs. A special program was held in honor of the Cerealia, which was the Roman Thanksgiving. At Christmas time another program was presented to celebrate the Saturnalia, or Feast of Saturn. Individual and original projects were submitted by each student during the school year. The classes sponsored the publication appropriately named Nunn et Tune. This paper, which appeared at Christmas and Easter, contained the contributions of club members and several articles written especially for the publication by men prom- inent in college and literary circles. The year was brought to a successful and happy climax by the annual banquet. This event personified the good feeling and eager co-operation of the club members, both socially and scholastically.
