SPIRITUAL RETREAT On Thursday and Good Friday before Easter, the college held its traditional Spiritual Retreat at Mt. Scott Boy Scout Leadership Training Camp. Speaker for the retreat was Reverend aloe Crane, pastor of the Eugene Church of God. Highlighting the Thursday evening activities was the observance of the ordinance of foot washing. Friday morning the group partook of Communion in groups of twelve. The group agreed beforehand that they would remain in corporate silence from the rising bell until the Communion Service. This time of quietness and meditation was very effec- tive. Throughout the rest of the morning conferences were followed by services in the morning and one in the afternoon which officially closed the Re- treat. www X5 This sextet of girls added greatly to the the Communion servlce. The meetings of this group are planned in such a way as to encourage in each member a deeper appreciation for the spiritual and cultural aspects of life. This is done in order to give preparation for greater service in the church. The preparation for service is-especially meaningful during the busy and trying years of college student life. Beginning the year with the Coming Out Party and ending with the all-school picnic the committee is kept busy planning the formal and informal activities which have become traditions on the campus. Becoming better acquainted with each other was an important part of this first all-school activity. Entertainment ran to a lighter vein as Rev. James Wade presented a fine song. FRESHMAN FELLOWSHIP One of the last activities of the opening week of school each year is the Freshman Fellowship Dinner. The basic purpose of Orientation Week is to help new students get settled in college life. This evening, spent in the college cafe- teria, included food, fun, and fellowship. The activities gave opportunity for old and new students and faculty members to get better acquainted. The speaker for the evening was Tom Smith. Mr. Sykes leads the group in fun songs while walt- ing for the delicious meal. fi Fw Q5 ew' A f WJ: '4.f ' .Ji ff 5 , K, , .- p. MX n EA Q. Presidents and official repre- sentatives frorn a great number of Col- leges and Universities attended the ceremonies. Representatives from other agencies were also present. This was a great day for PBC. Dr. Chapman and Bishop Grant, the principle speaker, lead the group out of the auditorium at the close of the ceremonies. For the second year the highlight was the out- door barbecue. A second very signficant experience of this year's homecoming was the burning of the Meier House on the east edge of the campus to make room for the new Gymnasium. The high- light of Thursday evening was a very excellent speech delivered by Governor Mark Hatfield fthen Secretary of State of the State of Oregonj. These groups sing in local churches and often accompany faculty and student speakers out of the state. They make a great contribution to the churches and for the school with the musical message they present. This summer two of these ensembles, the Ioybells and the Conchorclaires, will travel for the school presenting musical concerts in churches from the West to the East Coast. This type of evangelism is not only a spiritual blessing but is a big help in promoting the school and recruiting new students.
