The old man crossed in the twilight dim g The sullen stream had no fears for hirng But he turned when safe on the other side And built a bridge to span the tide. Old man, said a fellow pilgrim near, You are wasting strength with building here, You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide- W hy build you the bridge at the eventide?', The builder lifted his old gray head: Good friend, in the path I have come, he said T here followeth after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim g Good friend, I am building the bridge for him. WILL ALLEN DROMGOOLE WORD Dr. Gray: Your name and Pacific Bible College have been synonomous to the Church for thirty-seven years. Out of your dreams, the school was formed. Its life has been permeated by your life. Your industry, faith, and sacrifice have brought the school through many trying years. Ralph Waldo Emerson expressed the thought that, '4Every true man is a cause, a country, and an ageg requires infinite spaces and numbers and time fully to accomplish his designg - and posterity seems to follow his steps as a train clients. Many young men and women have left the portals of Pacific Bible College and are extending the shadow of your Godly life in Christian service. You have been devoted to the task of building a bridge to facilitate the journey in pursuit of knowl- edge. We dedicate this Beacon to you as you ap- proach the completion of your bridge for the young people who will pass this Way. DEDI INSTITUTION IS THE LENGTHENE I 3,33 ,- -X' fy' ,f -, A , -. It 9' . ,sf I .ivy Pacific Bible Institute's first home was located in Boise, Idaho. A. F. Gray was I elected president in 1920. After two years of operation the school closed. In I 1937 the school reopened in Spokane, Washington under the name Pacific Bible College. At this time there were eight regular students, three special students, and two instructors. 'Ybw 9' hu? .0 .M AKES FCRM . . . Activities on campus were conducted in a very informal way. One of the high- lights of the days' activities was the meals that were served in family style. Two stu- dents graduated in the first graduating class in 1939. A male quartet was or- ganized in the same year. Members of the student body gathered in the library for study. In 1940 it was voted to move the school to Portland, Oregon. Dr. Gray and the student body gathered for this last picture before the move was made. ,,,. l E in i ai.. View Sanitarium, situated at the top of 68th Avenue, just off Division St. in Portland, Oregon, was purchased for the new home of Pacific Bible College. The building provided for the offices, classrooms, and living quarters. Its surrounding property was cleared and put to good use. During the war years, students planted Victory gardens. These buildings, together with the originally purchased property pro- vided for the needs of the school for a number of years. As expansions were made in property holdings, the faculty of the school was also enlarged. 1 1 ui 'Farm nal T er:-ar. iii ,if Kwok Q iv x :Quill KNEE EEZ ll sn F n W 2 Dr. Gray, Dr. Linn, and A. A. Plans were drawn and Dr. Linn, Dr. Chapman, and Rev. Roper participated in the ground- breaking service. Construction equip- ment moved in and the building soon began to take form. The Otto F. Linn Library stands as a monument to the faithful one whose name it bears. IN HIS HONOR The problem of transferring 10,000 volumes was not a difficult one. Mem- bers of the faculty and student body pitched in and organized a ubookliftf' Even parts of the old shelving were transferred to the new building by a circuitous route. The empty shelves were soon filled with books. Members of the student body quickly learned to appreciate the expanded facilities provided by the new Otto F. Linn Library. ..,,n ......-r . . 1 4 A 4 'J ai. 2 nk.- 54 3, X F ,l gf 1 v.
