Two assemblies, one for middle school and one for high school, were held. Mrs. Kimsey, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Russell, Mrs. Cunningham, and Mrs. Van Pelt were all instrumental in organizing the affair. Christie Moak, a Herff jones sales representative, spoke to the students about goals and success. A small student chorus sang three selections from the musical, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, from which our theme was taken. Awards were given to students in each subject and grade based on academic achievement and most im- proved. Other county-level awards were distributed such as Math Team awards, Student of the Year and others. The Honors Day assemblies seek to recognize those students who strive to succeed. This year was a successful one. Honors Dayf15 Student Life The 1987 Ernest Ward High School student body consists of many clowns. O In spite ofthe fuss oftangled umbrellas, sticky hair, and runny makeup, October 24, 1986, was an exciting night, Our Homecoming Court came shining through the rainy weather with winning smiles. Pre-game activities presented Miss Suzanne Delmar as our 1986 Homecoming Queen. No one was prouder of Suzanne than her stepfather and escort Mr. Neal Russell. The moment everyone had waited for arrived with the crowning of this year's queen by Mr. Pettis. Although we lost the game, the dance went well. Homecoming Week provided us with lots of fun with all the weird and unusual getups students wore on the different dress-up days. Looking back on this unforgettable night, we see muddy football players, home- coming contestants sloshing through the rain, marching band members hovering under umbrellas, and very wet cheerleaders. However, we also see our 1986 Homecoming Court standing in the reign. 1986 Court erm- T' 1 8-,, A, .. - K junior Maid Kim Thortis lisfort Bill Thortis Freshman Maid Aimee Godwin Escort Mike Godwin 3 in 5s av T? Some of these were selling cookies and Christmas wrap, and mak- ing Valentine candy and grams that were delivered to various schools in the area. The fund raising is to help sponsor FHA members in the state convention. The FHA's community service project was to sponsor a needy family. They held a food drive involving the entire school, and it was successful enough to sponsor two families. The FHA also held a spring fashion show for the second year. Candlelight Moments provided prom dresses and tuxedos to be modeled by the students. The student body really enjoyed this. You're on Candid Camera MEMORY OF Occasionally, an individual appears on the horizon who fits no ordinary mold or any sage's philosophical quotation: such a man was joe Latham. The magnitude of his spirit was too great to be measured by or compared to any one person because he was a composite of many. Painting a word picture of joe Latham is a formidable taskg however, I am happy to share the joe that I knew and worked with for nearly thirty years. joe- served his country with the same patriotic zeal which motivated such men as Washington, Henry, Paine and john Glenn. shared a sense of humor and wit which held reflections of Lincoln and Twain. developed a political philosophy which was reminescent of Will Rogers. exhibited the leadership qualities of Moses as he marched his athletes through wins and loses. bore the courage of David as he met Goliaths on the football field and in the stands. portrayed the faith of Abraham and passed it on to his children and athletes. respected and honored women like the Apostle Luke, not from a sense of demand but from a sense of nobility. was loyal to his friends as Jonathan was to David and betrayed not one. joe revered God, loved his wife, children and family, honored his country, and gave his all to his Profession. Now that was a man! 2 Z .'f'f7' ,vf jOE LATHAM Latham Memorial Stadium was deidcated this year to honor the latejoe Latham, former coach and teacher at Ernest Ward for 27 years. Coach Latham was instrumental in helping construct the original field, He had been named Coach of the Year four times by the Florida Association of Coaches, and following his retirement was involved totally in the community fund-raising efforts for the Quarterback Club, Volunteer Fire De- partment, and other civic organizations. -L 4 1-n . -ru--1. . . That is a wish that I have for EVERY- ONE at our school. However, I recognize that perhaps that wish is rather vagueg following is a brief view of how I perceive this elusive thing called happiness. You carr'r pursue it and catch it. It comes upon you unaware while you are helping others. Happiness is like cologne-you can't spray it on others without getting some on yourself. It does not depend upon a full pocket book, but upon a mind full of rich thoughts and a heart full of rich emotions. It does not depend upon what happens out- side of you but on what happens inside of you, by the spirit in which you meet life. I wish you happiness! Wm ..gp ..- ?' . dl' ',,A,,,. I af ' I ,. :tj Oh, my children, life is to be savored, sipped and tasted, not gob- bled. It is very like food which is more nourishing and satisfying if taken in the proper proportions and time sequence. You are in the bud of life. Please don't pluck the bud from the nurturing bush before it has time to blossom into full growth. Wade gently into life so that you may enjoy the good things and have the strength and courage to face the hardships and disappoint- ments. Love to you! 4 -s..
