I MISS GEORGIANNA GURNEY To Miss Gurney, the senior class wishes to dedicate this Portico of '54. As Shake- speare once stated, Here is a true and industrious friend. Ludewig, Ross Cobb, Dr. John Mitch- ell, Charles Leroy. For almost innumerable hours the members of our Board of Education have devoted their best efforts to every phase of our scholastic life. These public-spirited men bear the same rela- tionship to the administration as do the faculty to the students. lt is through their aid and gui- dance that our faculty is able to secure the Fishkill Addition 11 ,, l L , ,JI ,,,M James S Evans School beneficial results for the school. For many years the Board has formed the policies by which our school has prospered and expanded. It is to these men that we owe our gratitude for Wappingers' outstanding achievements . The results of their efforts to provide well for our stu- dents are shown by the new James S. Evans School and the modern addition to the Fishkill School, as wellas the landslide vote on the new Expansion Program. Our expansion stands as a tribute to our Board. I O Y i Hard-working Administration Adds New Member .ig V3.9 GEORGIANNA GURNEY, Senior High Guidance Director. We thank Miss Gurney and Mr. Cavanaugh for their considerate guidance, Mr. Ingraham for his never-ending crusade to make us better citizens, and Mr. Kegan for his excellent plan- ning and supervision of Wappingers Central School . THOMAS CAVANAUGH, Junior High Guidance Director. SUPERVISING-PRINCIPAL E. Joseph Kegan and Jr-Sr, High School Principal Ben Ingraham Our story would not be complete if we did not pay tribute to the administration . They greatly influenced the forming of our character and have guided us on our way to meet the future. Seated at the helms of these vehicles was a very able crew of drivers, assuring us of being safely transported to the ever welcoming doors of W. C. S. These fellows worked intently throughout the summer and then proceeded to guide our enlarged fleet of buses. We give our thanks to these responsible men and to those custodians who work so hard to keep our school clean and neat. Damanda David Petrovits Within our hallowed halls you will discover the iunior artillery of Wappingers. You find, at a second glance, that these insurgent 7th and 8th graders are actually splendid salesmen. Under the supervision of Mr. Damanda, and with the encouragement of the core teachers, they carried on an extremely successful magazine campaign, and in their glory they held a cheerful party. These convincing salesmen topped their 52,700 by over 5300. The top salesmen were a pair of 8th graders from Mrs. Clearwater's home-room. The fortunate two whowon the trip to New York City were David Petrovits, who sold over SI00 worth of magazines, and Lois Meystre, who sold S75 worth. l I MAGAZINE CAPTAINS: Barry Borg, David Riley, Linda Jaycox, Ann Leonard, William Butts, Ronald Smyrski, Meta Van Borstel, Roy Blakely, Joy Muller, Joanne Michalosky, 12 A Profitable Party The staffstarted the Portico ball rolling with a successful dance. As we had decided to have padded covers, we sponsored this dance hoping that it would support our efforts. Shown is a small segment of the crowd that came to help fulfill our greatest expectations. It Happens Every Fall The sadistic i?j sophomores were at it again this year, attempting to dream up some dastardly way to initiate the poor freshmen. Witha ravening gleam the relentless sophomore would bestow on some lucky, unsuspecting freshman the task of carrying a few dozen rather large books. If the victim rebelled, thoughts of the seventh period soon per- suaded him. Although the rules were somewhat modified this year, the Fresh- man Day Committee still came up with a few interesting and humorous inno- vations, demonstrated in the gymnasi- um as a diverting assembly program. 1- -'N JoAnn Moeller, Nick Raffaele 13 Seifert Wins Ford Award ?-vs. I. ,,i , is T 5 j x On September 23, Bernhardt Seifert and his proud art teacher, Mr. Cac- camo, left for an exciting week-end in Detroit, Michigan. Those pulchritudinous girls shouting at the front of the crowd at sporting events are the cheerleaders. Their primary objective is to extract from the crowd as large an amountof noise as possible, whether winning or losing. To accomplish this, the members cheer with all their vocal power and go through their synchro- nized gestures at football and basketball games. At pep rallies, too, the cheer- leaders are there doing their stuff: instilling enthusiasm into the spectators and the will to win into the team. 16 if jeg KAQQI' Ol' ..!4I'lC! Q J Y. 1 :Q FRONT: L. Citizenship Education AND IN CLOSING We, the seniors pictured on the last pages of this l954 Portice, wish to bid all of you, not leaving with us, a fond farewell . As we enter the world outside of school this June, we will take with us the memories we have gathered in our years at Wappingers. This is the close of the act in our drama of life called school, and soon all we shall have left of it will be memories. So, as we bow out, we leave with you the thought that , as you progress through your years at Wappingers, you will build your own memories. Remember to keep and cherish them, for they will be memories worthy to be held forever.
