They also give much of their time so we may come to the many activities our school offers. While the bus drivers are not transporting students to and from school, they are working with Mr. San- ders and the maintenance men, who spend their time keeping the school and the campus clean. This year our driving staff made county history when Mrs. Phillips joined us as driver of Bus 6. She proved to the imen-of course they never thought it!-that those women are capable and efficient drivers. All in all, our transportation and mainten- ance crews are indispensable. To us, Wappin- gers Central would be at a loss without these willing people. BUS DRIVERS Standing-VC. Lent, R. Black, A. Cuchelo, Cforehead of R. Stillj, N. De-Paolo, F. Moreltoni, J. It ii unurual to find .ro much ability in one .fmall person. Class History Now that we are Seniors, the time has come for us to look back on all the activities in which we have partic- ipated. Few of us will ever forget our Freshman Day initia- tion into High School. Led by Phyllis Wilkin, our class could boast of a star varsity basketball player, two cheer- leaders, and a twirler, besides winning the junior League Intramural Award. Mickey Dorsey was a huge success in the operetta, The Gondoliersf' In 1949, with Phyllis reelected as class president, we prepared and carried out a gruesome Freshman Day. We participated in every activity in school. johnny Foster and Pete Sanfilippo played on the varsity basketball team, while Christina Visentin and Lucille D'Ambrosio became varsity cheerleaders. For his backstage work, Chuck Nord became a member of the National Thespian Society. We were well represented in the band, chorus, stage crew, and the Wap- flerian. In 1950 we became upperclassmen. With joe Negler as our class president, we had the most successful junior Prom in the history of Wappingers Central School. Our class showed its scholastic ability by having ten of its mem- bers inducted into the National Honor Society. They were: Morgan Cobb, jeanne Feddern, Shirley Hamilton, Lillian Hanlin, Paul Hof, Dorothy Lent, Charlotte Mohnach, Robert Russo, jean Savage, and William Tanner. Immediately after New Year's the juniors became the proud owners of their class rings. Moving Up Day was our day since we were awarded the editorships of the following year's Porlico and Wappertian. Now we are Seniors and have elected Pete Sanfilippo as our President. Dorothy Lent is G. O. President, Roberta White is Editor-in1Chief of the Portico, and Lillian Hanlin is Editor-in-Chief of the Wapperian. They took over their respective duties with the help of their staffs. Riki Gordon and Nile Barcalow were cast in the leading roles of our Senior Play, john Loves Mary. They became solid hits with their romantic love scenes. Seven more Seniors were inducted into the Honor Society: Carol Norcross, jean Boehm, Christina Visentin, Roberta White, Lucille D'Am- brosio, I-'aythe Briggs, Manfred Hockmuth. Boys such as Rod Darby, johnny Foster, Donald Smith, and Chee-Chee Versace helped W. C. S. football team to beat our arch- rival, Arlington, for the second year in a row. just before Christmas, George Martin joined our class and became a star basketball player. Twenty seniors made Honors for three and one-half years. Among our dances, we sponsored a Masquerade Dance and a Sadie Hawkins square dance, both of which were unusual successes. Now we are looking forward to Commencement Exer- cises for this is the night when we shall walk through the doors of Wappingers Central School into the wide, wide world. Honor Society During an October assembly, the annual ceremony for the induction of new Honor So- ciety members took place. After introductory speeches by Mr. Wells, Miss Gurney, and pres- ent members to welcome the new members and to explain the aims of the Honor Society, seven seniors and three juniors were inducted into our Dutchess Chapter, Number 2449, of the National Honor Society. Although we had lost several former members at graduation, this ceremony raised our total membership to twenty, with a membership of seventeen seniors making a new record here. After the candle- light ceremony Mr. Kegan administered the oath of membership to the successful candi- dates. At the first meetingb the group elected officers: jean Savage, President, Paul Hof, Vice- President, Manfred Hochmuth, Secretary, and Faythe Briggs, Treasurer. According to tradi- tion, the Honor Society sponsored the annual Valentine Dance on February 16. The corona- tion of the King and Queen of Hearts was one of the main features of this event. Although our society will lose seventeen seniors this year, we are looking forward to welcoming the incoming members, to be chosen from the present junior and sophomore classes. ,N-,Ekk- S fi g' 3 lm Juniors lfirwt mu 7-R. Through its channels, most of the business which is car- ried on by the students takes place. Its primary purpose is to give pupils prac- tice in good government. The Organization believes that only by starting early and giving the proper experiences in citizenship training can we improve and strengthen this great na- tion of ours against the tyrannical forces which oppose it. One activity of our Organization is to elect O. 40 Representatives the hall monitors who do such a fine job in maintaining proper trafiic control in our halls. In another phase of its control, the G. O. also operates our school store. Here are sold candy and school supplies at a considerable discount to the students. Each year, through our voting by real ma- chines for our new G. O. ofhcers and May Queen, the G. O. furthers its citizenship train- ing. Our aim is to see each pupil of W. C. S. not only a good G. O. citizen now but also a good community citizen in the future years. . w.Qw,ml.sM - H.. Ifirxal wu'?M. Hochmuth, Dorothy Lent, Mr. Kaminski, R. Russo, Marie Ciarfella. Serrmd mu'-J. Stage Crew This year's Stage Crew, although com- prised of many new members, has worked ef- ficiently. This was evidenced in our two major productions, the Senior Play and the Christmas Pageant. At the beginning of the school year, Herman Freihofer was elected Stage Manager. Herman has been active in the Stage Crew ever since the sixth grade and we feel that his un- tiring efforts deserve the Commendation of the entire student body. Although we have worked hard and put in many hours, we have received a great deal of enjoyment from our work. The outgoing sen- iors of the Stage Crew will miss the flurry of activities in preparation for next year's pro- grams and wish our successors the best of luck in struggling with future flats and doors. 3' Left to right-Mr. Deppe, S. Visual Education The Visual Education club is a very im- portant setup in the schedule of education for any high school, These boys are always anxious to show pictures. Mr. Deppe has no trouble making out the schedules at our club meetings because every boy is aware of the fact that showing the picture also means getting out of study hall. The Visual Education club shows pictures in the junior-Senior High School as well as in the Elementary School. If you think that some of your classmates get excited when they see a club member bringing in equipment for a movie, brother, you ought to see the Ele- mentary students. The Visual Education club shows about one hundred and fifty motion pic- tures, most of which are shown about five times each before they are returned. Besides showing motion pictures, we also have to show film when the teachers are too busy with other business. Firfz row-N. Henry, R. Hunt, S. Thompson, R. Eaton, H. Bihn, A. Olivetto, B. Hustis, E. One of these is the Open House program, and the other is the school assembly that is given annually by the chorus. The selections sung range from carols and spirituals to folk songs and patriotic numbers. A lot of work goes into the chorus and a lot of fun and good music result. 47 Junior Band Led by Mr. Lockwood the three bands, in- cluding the Marching Band, Concert Band, and Junior Band, this year did a very commendable job. The marching band, consisting of 57 mem- bers, played at all the football games. They also played in every parade to which they were invited. The concert band started out the year by electing Dorothy Lent as president, Lillian I-Ianlin as vice-president, and Danny Soper as secretary-treasurer. ln the spring both the Con- cert Band and the Junior Band gave a very suc- cessful spring concert. , . Portico We, the staff of the Portico, wish to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to all those who have contributed in any way towards helping us publish this 1952 edition. We should especially like to express our thanks to our advisor, Miss Murchie, and to our editor-in-chief, Roberta White. Our appreciation is also given to Mr. Caccamo and the Photography Club. Through the efforts of the students about 70 pictures were taken here at school. The attractive picture used for the end pages was taken by Mr. Caccamo last summer. Mrs. Oliva and the Business Staff also deserve a great deal of credit, for without them the financial burden of pub- lishing our Portico could not have been met. They also have entire charge of sales. Last fall several editors attended the C. S. P. A. Convention and returned with many helpful ideas. As a result, we hope you will enjoy our book as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. Since none of the V. girls will graduate this year, we are looking forward to even a better squad next year. We try our best to get the co-operation from the student body, promote school spirit, and to lead the J. V. basketball players on to victory. Miss Polis and Miss Nolan, their advisors, have also contributed greatly to this success. These girls have worked untiringly to cheer the boys on to victory and promote more school spirit in W. C. S. Their pep, originality, and new uniforms have made them one of the best Varsity squads to come out of W. C. S. Last year the Varsity cheerleaders placed third in the state-wide com- petition held in White Plains. This Year the girls hope to gain or better this same position. In the past they have not been so successful in the Dutchess County Cheerleading competi- tions, but this year we have great hopes for a great squad. Fin! mw4Mr. Stapleton, S. Teed, 1. Cashin, R. Baseball team, headed by Mr. Stapleton, didn't have too prosperous a season. As is the Case with all Vs., however, it is hard to get a winning team, because the players are all new and the coaches don't know their weaknesses. After one year on the V., the 'boys are bound to improve and make good var- sity men, and then the coaches can work with them personally. Then the coaches and the squads benefit form the hard work, enthusiasm, and good spirit of the J. V. boys. Above all, the boys have learned to play clean ball and to work as a team, not as individuals. wa- M if A r r 5 . .,.......-..,,- ,W , ., v Firxt rou'-E. Morano, A. Pendleten, W. Vincent.
