Hunter. The handy that govern our .fcbolartic world: The Board of Education Pictured on this page are five men who may be unfamiliar to some of our student body but who are most familiar with the problems of our school system. If one were to count the many hours of unselfish attendance at Board meetings, to say nothing of countless other duties ac- companying their position in our community, he would be amazed at the total. This group of public-spirited men has several thought- provoking problems facing it at the present time. As usual, they are concerned with maintaining our present high standards, both in equipment and in personnel. Their inter- est in the student body was manifested this year when the television appeared in the senior social studies classroomg their interest in our future is shown in their study of our urgent need for more space. We here at Wappingers Central School feel that we are fortunate in our Board of Education. Mt. Ben F. Ingraham, Mr. E. joseph Kegan, Miss Georgianna Gurney. Administration By the time any senior is ready to leave Wappingers, he finds it a hard task to put into words how much, in countless ways, the school personnel has meant to him. How- ever, we wish especially to pay public tribute to the three sets of guiding hands in our scholastic world: to Miss Gurney, for her constant interest in both our present and our future welfareg to Mr. Ingraham, for his readiness to listen to our numerous requests and to grant them whenever possible, to Mr. Kegan, for his accessibility and for never being too busy to let us consult with him. May we of the Class of 1951 always live up to the goals and ideals set for us by these three. GUIDING HANDS E X N W J M f f, K x X I KR ' , - X ' X ,f f I I X L J ry x 2 ,M M i Dennis J. Honor During one of our assemblies in October, 1950, after introductory remarks by Mr. Ingrahm, Miss Gurney, and present members, three seniors and ten juniors were inducted into our Dutchess Chap- ter, Number 2449, of the National Honor So- ciety. Although our ranks are reduced by the graduation of several of our former members, this ceremony raised our total roster to seventeen, In an impressive ceremony, after the lighting of the candles, the oath of membership was given to the new successful candidates by Mr. Kegan. At the society's first meeting Nicholas De- Marco was elected President. Paul Hof as vice- president, jean Keller -as Secretary and Charlotte Society Ostrander as Treasurer were chosen as his fellow officers for the ensuing year. Plans were immediately made for raising funds for the treasury. Wappingers pins and banners were put on sale during the basketball season. Following a. yearly tradition, the Chapter spon- sored the school's annual Valentine Dance, held this year on February 17. The scholastic side of our organization was emphasized when, on March 13, two senior mem- bers took the National Honor Society Scholarship Examination. Although the results are not yet known, we hope that once again Dutchess Chap- ter will produce a winner, as we have in the past. National Thespian Honor Society Some of these hands hold musicg others hold play booksg still others work on stage sets. As a reward, members of the National Thespian Honor Society are selected ac- cording to their achievement in school theatrical productions, both in acting and in backstage work. Those who are members have participated in the production of one or more of the plays and operettas given during their years in school. They may well be proud of their pins and diplomas, for these testify that their owners have contributed to the advancement of interest in the theatre in their school. Cl 'C2 5135.9 v Kneeling: E. These hands take charge of many of the tasks that make easy and en- joyable our contacts with the library. Have you a book reserved? Hands such as these will find it for you. Have you forgotten to Assistants return a book? These hands write the re- minder slips, shelve books, take charge of attendance and passes, file magazines-and constantly provide Miss Terpening with greatly appreciated and needed assistance. Senior Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, during the fifth period, the auditorium is the gathering place for our faithful choristers. Although this year's group misses the members we lost by gradu- ation last june, we have enjoyed a very successful fear. i From our entire group six girls made up a Senior Sextette which made its first public ap- pearance at the annual Christmas entertainment Sexlelle given for our parents and friends at Open House. We are proud that the audience showed, by its generous applause, its approval and enjoyment. In past years the chorus has taken part in school activities by singing at Baccalaureate and Com- mencement. At present we a.re looking forward to another appearance in junevthe last one here for some of us. 3 Chorus lfiv-if wiv: M. Martin, B. Luperelli, J. Disbrow, Mr. Lockwood: Second wut l. Spear, L. What fine work they do during the entire school year! Every teacher and class, from the kindergarten through the seniors, is conscious of their helping hands and cheery presence. When there is a filmstrip or a motion picture to be shown, Mr. Deppe's staff is always there. Probably no one realizes the extent of their service. During the ten months they are at our beck and call, they show for the benefit of our various classes ap- proximately one hundred and fifty motion pictures, each of which is run off on an average of five times. In addition, about eight hundred film strips have been shown in our classrooms by these eager beavers. They are an outstanding group, faithful and serious in their service. Kneeling: D. Peoples, C. Stage Crew This year we credit a great deal of our success, especially that of the Senior Play, to the Stage Crew. Every senior and every underclassman appreciates the grand work and cooperation rendered by this group. In- cluded among their varied activities are such diversified talents as making a tree, building a fireplace, painting scenery, decorating stage sets, running up and down ladders-to say nothing of such regulation tasks as directing the lighting of all assembly programs and setting up the chairs for those participants on the stage. Wappingers Central would cer- tainly miss our energetic Stage Crew. 'YC EC-H C0 WV! V. Cheerleaders The V. Cheerleaders began this year by electing Ann Van Wageiien Captain, and Winifred Relyea Co-Captain. As all the members of the squad were new and inexperienced, they put forth especially hard efforts. The group includes: Wini- fred Relyea, Ann Van Wagenen, Faye Mullen, jean Ryan, Barbara I-lusted, jackie Husted, Gerry Henry and Cathy Gallagher. The duties of the V. Squad are to promote school spirit and to help to lead the V. basket- ball boys to victory. This takes a lot of practice and long hours of hard work, but not one of the girls would willingly relinquish her post. As none of our girls will graduate this june, we are looking forward eagerly to the cheer- leading try-outs and expect to form the nucleus of next year's future prize-winners and future Varsity squad. We realize that we face keen com- petition from the present Varsity, but we intend to keep up our hard work and practice. Varsity Cheerleaders The Varsity cheerleading squad, under the supervision of Miss Polis and the leadership of Norma Kennedy, Captain, and Nancy Owen, Co- Captain, has had a very successful year of cheer- leading. This squad started out the season with only three veterans from last year and has gone all out to enliven the school with more school spirit than W. C. S. has ever had in previous years. Our squad proved its ability the night of the Arlington football gameg we really had a lot of support from the crowd. fOf course, we're not forgetting the team's part in defeating Arlington in basketball alsoj. An outstanding feature over previous squads is the addition of many new cheers and acrobatics presented to make our squad PePPY- In the near future our Varsity squad is looking forward to the cheerleading competition meet held to determine the best squad in Dutchess County, and the state competition held at White Plains. We hope to come out with top honors in both meets, but even if we don't, almost everyone will agree that this squad is one of the best to come out of W. C. S. Fin! row flfrj: Melvina Atkins, R. One for these was against Millbrook, the other against Oakwood. In each game our girls showed good teamwork and although they lost both games, they also showed wonderful sportsmanship. Under Mrs. Malek's guidance these girls worked after school practising plays to use in their games. In these after school sessions the girls learn the importance of team work. Many of these girls will be with the team next year hoping for success. Good luck, girls!! 66 Fifi! row: Melvina Atkins, R. Atkins, C. Mohnach, P. McAneney, Marguerite Atkins, P.
