HLstory In September, 1957, the Wappingers High School, Mesier Avenue, was the scene of great activity Within its walls, many new students, all Freshmen, were rushing around, with the sole purpose of finding their respective classrooms These new pupils hailed from various localities, including Fairview, Viola, New Hamburg, Fishkill, and Wappingers Falls It was the first time the school had had the privilege of housing outside students, so there was a great deal of bustle and excitement on the part of the upper classmen at the prospect of seeing new faces As for the newly arrived Freshmen, they were too bewildered and frightened to pay much attention anything except the task of associating the right room with the right corridor and the right teacher As time went on, order was restored from the chaos, and the students of this class, des tined to make history, found time to make friends with each other It was not long before this unique class began its out standing career It had the privilege of being the class to experience the thrill of the first Freshman Day in the history of Wappingers High The venture was a success because of he good sportsmanship and cooperation of all In the field f athletics both girls and boys excelled, the girls by winning the softball championship, the boys by being members of the Junior Varsity Basketball team The scholastic ability of the group was not to be neglected, however, as was shown when mem bers of the class received awards at the end of the year There were few changes in the class as the second year of its term ir nlgn school oegan Several members were missing, but there were also several additions In spite of crowded conditions, the class continued with its program A few of tke boys were outstanding in baseball and basketball, while the girls carried through by winning the field hockey championship The class had a chance to display its dramatic ability for the first time in high school by the presentation of a well known play, The Valiant The characters were portrayed excellently by well picked members under the direction of Miss Margaret Steele The intelligentia of the class also burst forth and again were rewarded It was during the Junior year that the ability of he class was really displayed It was a red letter year The first undertaking of the group that year was the sponsoring of movies in the school for the benefit of both townspeople an pupils The Junior Hop next followed in the line of successes The greatest social event of the year, however, was the Junior Prom, one of the most successful ever held in the school Throughout this year, members of the class participated every field of extra curricular activities, and several held important positions in various organizations However, al this glory lost some of its joy when it was learned, towards the end of the year, that the classmates from Fairview and Viola were to spend the last year of their high school career in a school of their own The class was to lose some of its companions, but it was to gain a new school, also Since it had to be so the time of separation could not have been more appropriate, after such an outstanding year of triumphs The last ytar in high school, and the first yeal in the new school, provided a fitting ending for the ambitious class With many new facilities at its disposal, the class had a fine opportunity for putting the finishlng touches on its career of successes The Senior Play and the Senior Prom were two notable triumphs Then, too, the innovations made in the school publications must be credited to the group The pro gressive class thus came to a successful end, with a store of helpful knowledge and experience gained through diligence and hard work It had a career of which it could be justly proud I O - O to O 5 . . l 7 . t . o 7 O O J L - V C Q L I I1 A ll - I I t I I d I I O in - I . l , I . . l O O . - , 0
