The Retro Staff Presents PAST . . . Wapella Comm. Unit 5 FOOTSTEPS IN TIME PRESENT . . . FUTURE . . . Volume 61 RETRO STAFF Nancy Duncan, Julie Russell, Michelle Mollet, Robin Thorp, Editor; Denise Whitted, Co-Editor; Karen Ledbetter, Linda Reynolds, Theresa Johnson, Miss Connie Durbin, Advisor. Absent: Nancy Arteman. Footsteps In Time As we walk through.the past. We realize how time has gone so fast. It's always there to remind us There are both good and bad times behind us. And as we walk, our mistakes are corrected. And with photos and memories good times are collected. Our footsteps now lead us out of the past And into the present. The present is a time for living. For working toward our goals and thanks giving. It's a time which requires many decisions, A lot of work and foreseen visions. We often find ourselves walking astray, Trying to decide which is the right way. By Peggy Karr Once our footsteps have decided which path to take Our future is then at stake. The future seems so far away. Yet we think of it each day. It's something to keep reaching for, Yet we'll never touch, there's always an open door. The future is always there; at least we hope as much. Our footsteps have found: Without the past We'd know not how to walk. Without the future We'd know not where to go. Thank you for your time, effort, patience, and for your devotion to the Future Homemakers of America. The Wapella FHA-HERO Chapter is part of a National Organization whose members are students in Home Economics or Home Economics Related Occupations. The activities of the organization are based on a common goal and eight purposes. In planning the program for the year, the executive council includes service, educational, and recreational projects. For service the members collect for Unicef, sell stationery for Muscular Dystrophy, and visit the Nursing Home. Speakers and panel discussions at the regular Chapter meetings, at the Section Rally at State Conference and at National Meeting are part of the method for carrying out the education of the members. The recreational projects include the banquet for parents, the tea for Mothers, the initiation for new members, and the Hamburger Fry and Sweetheart Dance sponsored jointly with the FFA. The National FFA Organization was launched at Kansas City, Missouri, in November of 1928 following many years of local agriculture clubs in high schools in the United States and was incorporated under a National Charter by an Act of Congress in 1950 (Rjblic Law 740, 81st Congress). The National Organization has approximately 450,000 members in 9,000 local chapters in all the states of the Union, Puerto Rico, Japan, and Great Britain. Illinois has more than 17,000 young people in FFA chapters with the Wapella Chapter having 28. The motto is Learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, living to serve. The purpose of the Student Action for Education is to acquire more knowledge of the responsibilities and the rewards of the teaching profession, to obtain a better understanding of the Wapella School and its particular educational system, and to set an example of cooperation among students, teachers, and administration. The activities that correlate with this purpose are: student teaching, activities during National Education Week, visits to colleges or businesses, and fun things like Christmas parties and pizza parties. In G.A.A. the girls participate in various sports and activities such as bowling, skating, swimming and softball. We try to create enthusiasm in good sportsmanship. During the fall the Science Club was in volved with a money making project and a field trip to Weldon Springs. These enthusiastic artists help to brighten the school by sponsoring a Karate assembly, and decorating the halls with artistic work. With the score 25-20 in the second quarter, Beason pulled away from the mighty Wildcats who put up a good fight to the end. Kevin Thorp turned in one of his finest performances of the season with 36 points. The Junior Varsity played an outstanding game against the Yellow Jackets, winning 49-45. The Pom Pom Girls gave a fine performance as usual at half time. The Homecoming Court was introduced with each queen candidate receiving a Homecoming mum from the Student Council.
