As every piece is important to the puzzle, every individual is important to our school. With this idea in mind, our aim is to present every possible aspect of Wapella High. With over 125 students having diverse interests and personalities, it is a large order to fill. But together with a staff of 11, we worked diligently to fill the following pages with a memorable interpretation of our lives during the past year. x 7 WE DEDICATE THIS 1974 RETRO TO . . . Miss Connie Durbin, who with the many hours of overtime that she puts in has helped the Retro Staff get our book together for the past four years. She has truly been a guiding light to us all. Along with this, she also teaches all the business classes at Wapella High: Typing I and II, Office Practice, Shorthand I and n, and Accounting. She has been a Junior and Senior class sponsor, and a real friend to the students. 4 SCHOOL LIFE GREAT SCOTT I ONE OF THE HOMECOMING1 FLOATS HAS GRABBED THE BIOLOGY TEACHER AND IS CLIMBING UP INTO THAT HUGE TREE.... I’LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS t 8:00 p.m. on the eve of Decemberl5th, many starry-eyed students and alumni ound themselves amidst a winter wonderland as they stepped onto the dance loor. The Homecoming Dance was a tremendous success with its snow-covered loor and brilliantly lighted Christmas tree. At the stroke of nine, in a glow of adiance, the king and queen's court entered the gym led by last year's king and ueen, Jim Holland and Sheila Johnson. After hushed anticipation, Mrs. Collman nnounced that the new 1973 Homecoming King and Queen were Steve Wills and Rebecca Thorp. The runners-up for the title were John Marvel and Nan Brown, he other members of the court were Linda Lord and Lewis Thorp, Lynn Samuel nd Steve Redman, Linda Woollen and Allen Washburn. After the excitement of he coronation, everyone continued dancing to the very end, to top off a perfect vening. 8 Even though the snow was continuing to drift, there was still a good turnout of enthisiastic fans. The Junior Varsity team put up a hard fight, but were still overcome by the Comanches. Between games some Art Club members presented to the school a handsome Wildcat mosaic. The Pom-Pom girls with braids and all, gave an outstanding performance to the beat of Half Breed . The Varsity played an outstanding game even though they were defeated by the Saybrook-Arrowsmith team. The boys may not have won the game by score, but it was won in the hearts of the students. 9 WHETHER YOU LOSE, WE WIN OR WHETHER YOU LOVE YOU WILDCATS! WAPELLA’S FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT The foreign exchange student of the 1973-1974 school year was Irma Desachy. Irma is from Mexico City. She is nineteen years old. Irma arrived in the United States on July 9. While here she lived with two families in Wapella. They were the Jim Clifton's and the Ronnie Fryman's. Irma was an active member in F.H.A. and G.A.A. F.H.A. was quite an experience for Irma, as she has never prepared food before. Irma is now studying to be a dentist. Being a city girl she had quite a few different things in Wapella to get used to. She was fascinated by the chickens at Boring's and wanted to know if they were boy or girl chickens. Irma left for Mexico City on February 27. She said she would miss the town and all of her new found friends. She plans on coming back to see everyone soon. COMPLIMENTS OF CLASS OF 1974 — wapella h.s.
