D. Harrold DEDICATION For your efficient work and leadership as our school superintendent, and for your guidance and understanding as our friend, we wish to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation by dedicating this, the 1957 Retro of Wapella High School, to you, Mr. Arnold. BOARD of EDUCATION LEFT TO RIGHT: Paul Ives, Kenneth Duncan, Carl Thorp, Norman Arnold, Dale Chenoweth, Harry Bethel, Ray Johnson, and Donald Powers. DOROTHY CAMPBELL SUPERINTENDENT S MESSAGE It is very gratifying to see a group of high school students working together as you are this year. This is an indication of your ability as future citizens. As we travel through life, there is always a lot of giving and taking. Our changing times have had their effect on this year's senior class in that you have had to give up certain things that you have worked for. Your ability to give up personal wishes and desires only makes you stronger for something that opportunity will provide for later in your life. These qualities that you possess will help to make you a happier being as you live your life. PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE SENIORS TODAY-LEADERS TOMORROW The heritage that is ours is often taken very lightly by today's average high school student. Many of us need to stop in this furious pace we are setting and consider what has taken place in the past that has made possible this high standard of living that we are now enjoying. Due to this heritage, we in the United States have the greatest educational potentiality of any country in the world. This has been made possible by the leaders of our country who have had the foresight needed to ascertain possible situations in the future. Remember, students, that each year Seniors leave our school to find their place in this economy. Are you prepared to become a leader? FACULTY CHARLES SCHETTLER Vocational Agriculture B. SENIOR BABY PICTURES James Underwood Bill Deeters Junior Lange Ronald Oakley Marvin Morris Philip Green Joan Johnson Catherine Toohill Antoinette Thorp Donna Jones Rosalie Summers Sandy Kinder SENIOR PROPHECY It is the year 1967 and the class of 1957 are having their first ten year reunion. The whing-ding is taking place in the lobby of the now famous Green Door hotel in Wapella, owned and operated by Philip Green. In charge of the reunion are former classmates Sandra Kinder, Rosalie Summers, and Catherine ToohilL Let’s go there quickly so we can see what is taking place. We arrive just in time to see Philip hypnotize the first member of our class so we can get the dope” on the past 10 years of his life. Number 1 is Sandra Kinder. Sandy tells us that she has won herself a wealthy husband on one of her ocean cruises during which she served as hostess. She has 10 kids with a private tutor and chauffeur for each one. Rosalie Summers is a recording star. She tells us that she got her start by out-yodeling the champion yodeler of Bavaria and has taken over his job as yodeler for the Busch-Bavarian advertisement. Catherine Toohill tells us she is laboratory technician at St. John’s hospital. She once stirred up a mixture which has experts puzzled. It seems that when she gave it to her patient, he started doing the bop and he hasn’t run down yet. Buddy Ryan is a well-known shirt manufacturer. He became famous for his shirt with the detachable front. He says if you spill something on the front of the shirt you can take it off and put on a clean front, while all the time you have on the same shirt. Bill Deeters is an electrical engineer. He specializes on working on electric chairs. He says he has just given the one at Joliet State Prison an added charge. Denny Bray is a barber now. He says he has a booming business, especially in the short shears. He has a style all his own. He was discovered and advertised by the one he gave Paul Mollet in his high school days. Joyce Witt (Mollet) is next on the stage and is ready to be hypnotized so we can hear the dope on her life. She says she is happily married and has a complete push-button home. It seems she is always getting hit by pushing the wrong buttons. Marvin Morris tells us that he now runs a funeral home. He drives the hearse himself. It seems that he got the idea in high schooL Antoinette Thorp is quite well-known for her Rock’n Roll techniques and is now giving Elvis Presley lessons on how to shake. Paul Mollet tells us he is owner of a chain of Sip-and-Dip stands. He does a big business, partly due to his good-looking waitresses. He keeps his wife (ex-waitress at Sip and Dip in Clinton) inside washing dishes. Mary Sumpter says she is private secretary to her husband who is manager of Heinkels. Whenever they have a family quarrel, she doesn’t speak but just writes office memos for later use, when she feels like talking. Junior Lange is a player on the House of David team. He says it took him 5 years to grow a beard so that he would be eligible to play, but now he has a full-time job keeping it trimmed so he doesn’t trip on it. Ronald Oakley says he lives on his research farm called Oakley Acres. His latest experiment is growing a special food for hippy women. Anything Ronnie can’t tolerate is a woman bigger than he. Duane Gardner says he is an instructor for the National Guard. One day he shouted out orders so fast that the boys were running into each other like they were in a maze of mirrors. Raymond Fryman says he is just a farmer, but his looks have changed quite a bit. He tells us that at first he couldn’t get anywhere because of his temper. He finally had Denny Bray bleach his hair so he could lose his temper. James Underwood designs cars for General Motors. He says he has plans for a remote-controlled car, made especially for lovers. He and his girl have already experimented with one, and they say it is terrific. Joann Johnson has become quite a screen star. She says she got her start by being an understudy to Marjorie Maine. Her comedy caused Jack Benny to give up at the age of 39. David Wilson says he has just won the ‘’Daredevil’s” race. Upon nearing the finish line, he turned a sommersault in mid-air. He ruined his old high-school hot rod by doing that. Donna Jones informs us that she is teaching French at Yale University. The class is taught entirely in French and sometimes the topics are odd but interesting. Last but not least (or littlest) comes Mr. Schettler, our sponsor. He tells us that he took the 1958 class to Chicago on their trip. He thought he knew Chicago well after our tour, but it seems the only place he remembered was the location of Riverview--probably because that's where we spent most of our time.
