SB aids in purchase of videotape machine As the year comes to a close I have no feelings of regret or relief. I have thoroughly enjoyed this year serving as A.S.B. President, and I am very proud of the accomplish- ments that were made through the efforts of the Board of Control membersf, We started the year out with little money, but we quick- ly covered it up with A.S.B. sales and football gate receipts. Amazingly enough, with a record of l-8 for the football season, we made more money this year than any other year. Spending the money, however, was no problem. The A.S.B. helped the annual class pay some back debts, gave S500 towards the purchase of a new videotape machine, and, of course, paid all the bills relating to the various sports. Money problems were not the only things that occu- pied the time of the A.S.B. We held a joint meeting with White Swan A.S.B. leaders in an effort to help them straighten out a few problems. During the Christ- mas season, we handed out 24 Christmas boxes filled with gifts, food, and candy. We went to the school board and pleaded for cloth towels. We got them. We also successfully sponsored several school dances. Above all, I feel we got a little more involvement from the students. If success was measured by accomplish- ments, then I feel that we were and will be one of the most successful A.S.B.'s to ever hit Wa-Hi. Dee Allsop A.S.B. The season was highlighted with an excellent 4th place finish at State. The young and experienced Wolfpack was not de- feated in league competition for the second straight year. Coach Tomisser, commenting on the youthfulness of this year's team-two juniors and five sopho- mores represented Wapato in the District meet- was extremely pleased by the performance of the team under the pressures of District and State competition. Ed Aparicio, junior leader of the pack, finished in nineteenth place at State. Bobby Tovar, sophomore course record holder, came in 34th, and cousin Lupe Tovar, a junior, placed 44th. Sophomore Felix Cos- tello and Andy Tovar rounded out the top five finishers with places 60th and 83rd. Wapato was also represented by junior Carey Anderson 96th place and sophomore Phil De La Rosa lO2nd. Coach Tomisser said, The team really worked hard all season. They are by far the most talented team I've coached, and their loyalty to one another and the team is fantastic. The team posted a l7-ll record for the season. Starting out slowly, the Pack gathered momentum through the latter part of the season and finished fourth in the tough Mid-Valley League behind the likes of Ellensburg, Hanford, and Sunnyside. District playoffs started off on a losing note as the Wolves lost their first game to an inspired Prosser ball club. Faced with elimination the Wolfpack got down to business and won their next four district games eliminating their opposition as they went. These games were no pushovers though as the pack average win margin was an incredibly close l.7 points per game. After eliminating a much taller Ellensburg club for the second spot regional berth., Wapato was faced with a still larger challenge in taking on the Othello Huskies. After build- ing a 12 point lead in the first half the pack could not manage to hold on and went down to defeat. Sunnyside had also lost in an overtime battle to Medical Lake. This matched Wapato and Sunnyside up, the winner taking the third berth and the loser out. For the first time in two years, Wapato edged the Grizzles 78 to 75 in a foul-filled game, marked by an irate fan firing B-B's upon Wapato players, fans, and rally squad. Wapato then lost its first state game to the taller Elma Eagles to which elim- inated the Wolves and finished their season. Wapato, . . with a 7-1 league record, tied with co-champs Sun- nyside. The Wolfpack also placed second at the district tournament and sent eleven grapplers to the region- als. From there, five wrestlers advanced to the state finals. The Wolfpack was led throughout the years by seniors Steve Viernes, Vance Haddox, and Joe Manjarrez. Steve Viernes, Wapato's 141 pounder went into the state finals undefeated and almost lost in the final match. Trailing, by a score of 7-9 with 40 seconds left, Viernes put his Franklin-Pierce opponent on his back to win the state crown. Other state entrants for Wapato were Arnulfo Gonzales, Mario Gonzales, Joe Manjarrez, and Heavyweight Don Daniels. Mario, losing in the last few seconds, placed 5th at 135 lbs, Arnulfo, and Don each placed a respectable 8th place in the overall competition. Joe Manjarrez, NOi7i2 finalist at the regional tourney, met stiff competition and received l2th place. The state team as a whole placed 12th, and Coach Ray Cooper com- mented that he was very satisfied with Wapato's 1974-75 season and expects as strong a team for next year. 70-Wrestling League Championship T 1 L 1... The team proved its strength and depth by being able to handle all other Mid-Valley teams except Han- ford. The cindermen gave them a good rungwith the contestants really com- peting way over their heads. The Wolftrack had all-around good balance as ateam. Under the coaching of Bob Tomisser, Roger O'Dell, Morris Blankenbaker, and Tom Layman, six squad members qualified for state competition at Pull- man after placing second at district. Members attending the state meet were David Strother in the javelin, Lupe Tovar in the two mile, Ed Aparicio in the mile, Rick Orozco in the 880, Randy Bolong in the long jump, and Dan Wold in the high jump. The young not scoring at state, got a taste of state competition and will, in the coaches opinions, do much better next year. The Wapato Wolves golf team finished with the finest record posted by a Wapato squad. After three straight wins over West Valley 347-351, Sunnyside 355-360, and Grandview 342-383, the competition grew much tougher as they dropped their last four matches against Toppenish, Ellensburg, Hanford, and Selah. The team placed fifth in the Mid-Valley League: as a result Char- lie Hoppes was the only Wapato golfer to participate in the district match. Next years team will have a favor- able note to begin on as only two seniors will be leav- ing, Jim Vigil and David Hagarty. In the l975 season the Wolves received uniforms Qjackets and shirtsl to wear for the matches. For the first time, three junior varsity matches were held to improve the lower ranks. The girls had their first team matches as they defeated Selah three straight times. Pictured on the right is Crystal Marey, the top girl golfer on the team. However one cuts it, though, Wapato's teams of 1974- 75 look good! We won the girls' sub-district, boys' district, and on the state level, our boys placed second. Highlight of the year was the ex- citing, imaginative play of our i state champion doubles team: Ted Cummings and Doug Menke. Sophomore Cliff Menke added vital team points by winning fifth place in singles. Ironically, Linda Cummings fwith a 21-3 season recordj and our top doubles Becky Fate and Arlene Tabayoyon C16-73 missed going to state by the narrowest ofmargins. Our days at high school became filled with plan ning, rehearsals, anticipation, reminiscing, laughter, and crying The Mother's Tea gave us all a chance to show off our mothers and also gave the mothers a chance to let the apron strings go. The Senior Banquet was highlighted by good home cooking and oldfashioned entertainment. The parents truly out did themselves trying to embarrass their children! But we love it and so did they. but close seniors' year 138-Baccalaureate Commencement exercises begin At the Baccalaureate the graduates were priv- ileged to hear the advice of some of the senior parents through prayer and spoken word. The ceremonies were highlighted with an oration by William Clark, father of Kevin Clark. He pointed out to the graduates that they should use the tools that they have earned at high school to create a better environment for the future. He made it clear that we could either use what we have got or let it all go to waste. He did not want us to think that we would all become scientiests or other types of experts but he wanted to instill in us the ideal of using what we have to make what we are better. l. Mr. Judd Allsop offers the invocation at Baccalaureate services. 2, J. Mack Phillips does an outstanding job as organist for both Baccalaureate and Graduation. J. Mr. John Hill offers a prayer during the services. 4. Mr. Wil- liam Clark is the guest speaker for Baccalaureate. 5. Dr. Glenn Doornink addresses the graduates. 6. Solemn graduates await graduation ceremonies at the conclusion of Baccalaureate.
