I am prob- ably fhe besf informed on anyfhing and everyfhing around fhe school, buf when fhe WASEI-IIAN sfaff asked me fo be fhe fheme-and narrafor. well . . . I iusf didn'f know whal' fo falk aboufp buf affer pondering over if. I believe I know whaf you will mosf enioy hearing. Our school sfill has a new smell fo if. fhis being fhe second year of ifs use. lmprovemenfs are confinually being made . . . a flagpole has been erecfed ouf fronf and fhe lawns are planfed. Trees and shrubbery adorn fhe main enfrances and courfyards. and a spacious new sidewalk provides a shorfcuf across fhe wesf courf. A design in mosaic has been sef on fhe once barren wall of fhe norfh enfrance. showing some of fhe falenf of our arf classes. As I wafch fhe seniors driffing info fhe shadows of school hisfory. I can fhink back fo when fhey were liffle sophomores. and if seems as if if were only a few days ago. Funny . . . fhe changes fhaf came over fhem in fhree shorf years of high school. Their sophomore year was like an inifiafion. They were scared af firsfg fhen fhey began fo enioy if. As fhey became iuniors. fhey all sfarfed buckling down fo gef info fhe drifl' of fhings. fougher fhan if was fhe year before. Then. fhe season of highesf merif. fheir senior year . . . and suddenly. fhe fime of saying goodbye fo fhe old prison. and of looking ahead fo posf graduafe life. l'm glad I will never graduafe. IN MEMORIAM Q' M g g my g GLENDA OSTREIM IS VICTIM OF LEUKEMIA This year lhe WASEHIAN is dedicaled lo Glenda Oslreim, daughler oi Mr. and lvirs. Leonard Osireim. Glenda died ol leukemia on Friday. January 24, l958, a+ lhe age ol l5. She ariended Wapalo schools for len years and would have gradualed wilh The class of I96O. Glenda was always cheerful and had a 'friendly smile for everyone. Being inleresled in children, she ollen iended Jrhem during her evenings and on weekends. She was also a Youih Leader al Jrhe Church of God, which she arlended. The proceeds from lhe i958 Baked Bean Dinner wenf lo The Cancer Fund in Glenda's name. All who knew Glenda Oslreim will remember and miss her for many years lo come. 1958-59, THE YEAR . . . Ol course, ihe inside assemblies had lheir allraclions, loo, wilh a :lil in nearly every one. Somelimes a club would be in charqe of lhe program and sornelimes a class. By ihe end of lhe season almosl every orqanizalion in school had spon- sored one or more ol lhese assemblies, A few ol lhe ones lhaf I especially liked were The chorus and Red Devil assemblies, in which oddly dressed boys perl formed lhe can-can and sonqleader rouiines, lhe Pep Club inilifilion, which called on lhe new members lo play a game of loolball and enierlain wilh hula hoops, The G.Px.A. assem' blien, one lealurinq Mr. Fllis dressed as a wilch, and lhe olher an inilialion, and finally lhe band proqram, slarring Mr. Dielrich and Ivlr. The songleaders, whose number was increased To six fhis year, were half iuniors and half seniors. Bonnie LaPlanfe, a senior, was ihe only girl wiih 'rhree siraiqhl years of service. The whisfle sounded and ihe group began a new maneuver. As fhe girls came near where I was siffing, l heard fhe songleaders say somefhing abour Drilleffes, and lhey fold ihe marchers fo smile, l decided fhen fhai fhis was fhe Drill Team wifh a new name and alrered uniforms. Affer fhe game l learned fhaf Lynda Pafnode was serving as presideni' of fhe group for fhe fhird year and fhaf fhirfeen new mem- bers had been elecfed, raising fhe fofal membership from 24 'fo 30. Mrs. Morrell was chaperone and drill insfrucfor for fhe group while Mr. Warcup acfed as ifs advisor. This year fhe Drilleffes gave half-fime performances af four home games. The dafes were January 2, January I7, January 30, and February 7, when we played Ellensburg, Pasco, Eisenhower, and Richland, respecfively. During The year lhe group, which aulomalically includes all sludenls faking French, sang and played French games and walched skils prepared by each of The French classes. Once during a mceling, a woman named Mrs. Menke came and showed slides ol lhe World Fair. This was a real lreal for The club members because Mrs. Menke spoke very lluenf French.
