Despite being confronted by wintery gales, deep blankets of snow, and high water, Wapat0's edu- cational process did not falter or fail. Typical of the past year,s winter, this aerial photo shows the Wapato High campus. Here is where we, the high school youth of the community, are granted the most precious opportunity to grow-in mind and spirit. Here has been the center for many unforgettable school activities and for educational enlightenmentg this is where we have been privil- eged to receive encouragement as well as recogni- tion for doing our daily tasks and meeting every- Here is one of the finished products of the many educational functions-the 1956 Wasehian. Under the capable leadership of Mr. Syrdal. our school has successfully carried forward its purpose of providing for the educational needs of its students. By staffing the school system with well-qualified teachers and by continuously study- ing and evaluating the courses of study, Mr. Syrdal has seen that Wapato has a good educational system. Much of Mr. 5yrdal's time this year has been spent on de- tailed planning with the school board, contractors, and teach- ers on the new million-dollar high school. Mr. Syrdal played a major part in promoting the bond issue campaign and making known the need for a new school. Among many other endless details, Mr. Syrdal must plan for the purchase of materials and equipment, any busses that we need, and he sees that the buildings and grounds are maintained by renovating older portions of existing build- ings and replacing worn desks and other furniture. A strong leader, Mr. Syrdal reflects the quality of Wapato's administrationg he inspires both the faculty and the students to higher goals and greater accomplishments, and he com- mands the respect of all who know him. These five men, devoting hours of time for the betterment of the school and receiving no compensation, represent the community in action. lmportant discussions and plans pertaining to the construction of the new high school building headed the lengthy list of projects carried on by the school board during the past year. These men helped conduct the original study of the growth of the Wapato school system which was published in pamphlet form and was a key factor in promoting the bond issue. lt is the duty of these men to establish the policies of the school. They authorize all financial expenditures and act on all major decisions. They must constantly look into the future to meet the demands of a growing population and new and advanced trends in education. Through unselfish leaders such as these men, Wapato's school system will continue to progress and offer the best possible educational program for its youth. BOARD OF EDUCATION Board of Education, left to right: Robert Schroeder, Virgil Cameron, Fred Olsen, Robert Fortier, Don Strother. l I I I I IQUJOX Illl-I'l'RltIll. l'RlNCll'iXL . .. Since Nlr. Dietrich took the job as principal three years ago. he has shown the same fine qualities of leadership as an f administrator as was exemplified during the years when he was a popular coach and director of athletics. To us. tht- students of Wa-Hi. he is a guiding light . . . a personal advisor to everyone. He corrects us when we are wrong, praises us. and defends us. Hr. Dietrich does more than execute the ordinary duties of a principal. He goes be- yond the point of duty in presenting a program of lively recreation. He is a counselor to the clubs and organizations and sees that they uphold high standards. To those seniors who are about to step into the world Or continue on to college. he gives personal advice and favors. He goes out of his way to help them in vocational placement and in making scholarships available, he doesn't push or pull them but en- courages and inspires. Hr. Dietrich also promoted a program of testing that is helpful to both students and teachers in placing students in tht- proper English courses, and he initiated the mental maturity testing progrant. These activities we have mentioned are but a few of the many things Mr. Dietrich docs which set him far above the average high school principal. Truly, he can he called a steadfast beacon and guiding light to all. As long as Wapato has such administrational leadership. our school will continue to rank high in education, leader- ship, and citizenship, Left to right: Mrs. Lorena Benjamin. Mr. Chester Soley, and Miss Evelyn Shirts. Mrs. Lorena Benjamin, a very cheerful, efficient. and capable person, is serving as secretary to the superintendent. This was her first year as a school secretary, but she previously did secretarial work and accounting at the bank for four years. Mrs. Benjamin, who is assisted by Mrs. Hilda Skone, acts as a receptionist, writes letters, deposits money receipts for the district, and types forms to be submitted to county. state, and federal offices. Miss Evelyn Shirts, who has been secretary to the principal for fourteen years at Wapato, has the duties of recording grades, recording attendance, writing letters, mimeographing the daily bulletins, and making out reports and invitations. Mr. Chester Soley, bookkeeper and accountant for the school district and clerk for the school hoard, could be called the man who knows all the facts. Mr. Soley records school funds, sees that all school employees and outstanding bills are paid each month, sends orders for school supplies, and delivers all purchases for the district. Not shown is George Hansen, Superintendent of buildings and grounds, who is in charge of all custodians and bus drivers. This little four-letter word carries with it a lot of feeling, especially when it comes from a well-made paddle during Red Devil initiations. This excitement lasts for two days, but new members have one consolation-their turn is coming next year. A Red Devil will not easily forget these two days. Meniliers of the club saw new dazzle added to their ranks when it was decided to purchase white sweaters to go with their traditional Red Devil emblems. Along with maintaining at least a C average in their school work, members are now subject to a point system in order to stay in the club. Under the advisorship and guidance of Mr, Ed Fisher, the Red Devils served as a shining example of an active group. They did an excellent job of patroling at games, maintaining order in the halls, and assisting with various other duties throughout the school. 1 Q 'QR s . - wg: .s nfs, ,S N 'imksft' sf ,ti A F I. The girls play various sports, starting the year with softball, followed by tumbling, ping pong, badminton, bas- ketball, and volleyball. The team finished the season with a 7-2-0 over-all record and a 6-2-0 record in league play. The Wolves were recognized as about the hottest thing in the league from mid-season through the season's finale-the traditional Armistice Day game against the neighboring Toppenish Wildcats. In that game, Wapato's seniors, playing their last game for their Alma Mater, covered themselves with glory by turning in a sparkling exhibition of football and contributing greatly to the 19-0 triumph. ' Although the team placed fourth in league play, two of the boys-Joe Espinoza, quarterback, and Joe Ortiz, halfback-were rated good enough by the coaches of the state to be picked for berths on the East's All-State team. Wapato placed more players on the All-Valley first team than any other school. John Douglas, Roger Culver, and Joe Espinoza were the players receiving the honors. Roger Culver was the team's choice for Inspirational player. Joe Ortiz was on the All-Valley second team and was voted Honorary Captain by the team. .lim Stump received a place on the Honorary Mention All-Valley Team. It is little wonder that Wapato had the best defense and the highest-scoring offense in the valley. Very top: Ortiz kicking, Juarez holding, in a successful try-for point. The yearis first social function was the junior party. The theme, '6Autumn Leavesf, was carried out most effectively in the decorations. Probably the most enjoyed of the year7s social functions was the Junior Bowles Brandt Prom. The queen's court consisted of five outstanding junior girls. Social Chairlnang Marilyn Pis: Q The graduates are going forth- God bless them every one!- To run this hard and stubborn world Just as it should be rung But much I fear theyill find that facts Donit always track with dreams, And running this old world is not As easy as it seems. The graduate is prone to think His wisdom is complete. He's but to ask-the world will lay Its trophies at his feet. , The world has garlands and applause At graduating timeg But may forget him the next day, When he attempts to climb. Life is a battle where each one Must seek and hold his own. He who would rise above the clouds Must scale the heights alone. This is the rule of life today, As it has ever been: The world bestows its smiles on those Who have the strength to win. But schooldays done and work begun, 'Beneath all outward semblances He learns to his regret The college of experience He has not mastered yet. It looks for merit true. It little cares how much you know, But asks, what can you do? Back row, left to right: Carol Banks, Clarabelle Balzer, Ellena Heikell, Carol Perkins, Beverly Hubbard, Everett Weeks, Joe Olney.
