The school exists for you. the students. and much of the success or failure of this year and the years to come will depend on your desire to do a good rob in gaining your education and the enioyment you might have in the other activities at school. The student leaders and the student body can be proud of their yvork this year. The fine spirit that prevailed during the gathering and dis- tribution of the Christmas gifts to the needy and the March of Dimes drive typifies the spirit that exists here at your school. Let us continue to be fine students and citizens and be proud that all of us are working together for the good of our school and our community. eheel Secretaries aaa Five people compose the very efficient Office Staff. Mr. Sherman Knight. superintendent of building and grounds. is in charge of all custodians and bus drivers. The superintendent of schools is aided by his secretary. Miss Barbara Archer. who is assisted by Mrs. Hilda Skone. Some of the common secretarial duties are letter writing. depositing money receipts for the district. answering the telephone and serving as receptionist. Forms must also be typed and then submitted to county, state. and federal offices. Y, Mr. Dietrich Kasiaess ,Manager Miss Evelyn Shirts. secretary to the principal, finds many things to do in her position such as recording attendance, recording grades, writing letters. mimeographing bulletins. and making out invitations and reports. Mr. Chester Soley serves as the Xlfapato School District bookkeeper and ac- countant. It is his duty to record the school funds. to see that all employees of the school receive their salaries each month and that bills are paid in addition to sending all orders for school supplies and delivering all purchases for the district. Linda Labberton. and Patty Greene. Wapzzfo High A very active organization in XY'apato High School this year. our excellent band made many public per- formances. Under the direction of Oland K. Wfarcup, the band started its year by appearing in the parade at the Ellensburg Rodeo on September 4. On September 6, the band marched in the Wfapato Harvest Festival parade. During football season. the spectators were enter- tained at half-time. These shows were highlighted by a fine marching exhibition at the Homecoming game, On October 50. the band again made a trip to Ellensburg to appear in the halftime marching ex- hibition at the Central XY'ashington College of Edu- cation Homecoming game with six other valley bands. The band presented its annual Fall Concert on October 19. This event was well attended and much enjoyed by all. Mr. XY'arcup's musicians started basketball season by playing at the annual four-school iamboree held in XY'apato and then played at all home basketball games throughout the remainder of the season. -l,5- Linda Labberton falto clarinetj, Patty Greene fbass clarinetj, and Anita Hornstein foboej, were candidates for the annual All-Northwest Music Fes- tival held at Eugene, Oregon. Of these three, Linda Labberton was chosen by festival officials to play in the festival band. This year the band also sent ten musicians to the Valley Band Festival in Yakima. Majorettes for the marching band were Head Ma- jorette Linda Labberton. Patty Greene. Velma Case. Alvina XY'eishar, and Bonnie Davis. Band officers are Ralph Koss, President: Iannice Murphy. Vice President. 'loanne Clayton. Secretary- Treasurerl Patty Greene. Attendance Officer: Bob Campbell and Richard Boger. Managersg Anita Horn- stein, Student Directorg Alvina Weishaar and Dennis McKay, Librarians, The band deserves a great deal of recognition for their outstanding work at school activities such as assemblies and games. This is the one organization that starts practice long before school starts. The Choir. singing O Come All Ye Faithful. then marched into the gym with lighted candles and took their places on the risers. The outstanding attraction of the program was the tableau presented by the Dramatics Class and ac- The Choir was under Eichenberger. ff Bob Mitchell. and Lyle Maller. companied by the Choir with various and appropri- ate carols. Kneeling: President Ray Faucher and Secretary Don Labberton. One of the most active service clubs functioning in the school this year was the Lettermen's Club, under the guidance of Mr, Dorr. The new lettermen from last years track, tennis. and baseball teams and this years football team were initiated on january 6 and 7. To end the initi- ation, the club presented a pep assem- bly at which the new lettermen were give the traditional egg shampoo. At the next meeting of the club, hacks were given for violations of the initi- ation rules. During the year, the lettermenis duties were to help with the junior high intramural program and to patrol the football and basketball games, All in all, this fine organization contributed much toward the better- ment of our school year. Pep 61116 The Wa Hi Pep Club forms the nucleus of school spirit. Under the guidance of Mrs. Yifeitz, the club was responsible for the success of many activities. The club entered .1 float in the Xlfapato Harvest Festival. winning third prize. On September 18, new girls were initi- ated into membership by portraying various characters, and the hilarious octasion was concluded by a rec-room dance. The girls raised funds by sponsoring var- ious sales and teenage dances. This year's Homecoming success was most- ly due to the girls' earnest effort and fine cooperation. Homecoming activities were held during the halftime at the football game with Cle Elum on November 5. Fol- lowing the game, a dance was held to honor the Homecoming royal court. On November 10. XY'apato and Toppen- ish held the 'annual exchange assembly. Fea- turing music, drama, and dancing, it suc- ceeded in building up school spirit for the Armistice Day football game.
