The theme, Land of Oz, ' was carried out in painstaking detail through the combined talents of the members of the junior class. The land of eternal fan- tasy was portrayed with all the stor ' book ingredients: the Emerald City, the Munchkins, the yellow brick road, the witch ' s castle complete ' ith the witch, the scarecrow, the tinman, and the lion. As the couples crossed the portals into the Land of Oz, they ' ere en eloped b ' a romantic mist. The Tunetimers lent melody to the night as the starr --eved STuests of tlie izard danced till dawn. Entertaining visiting legis- lators and studying student governing bodies of area schools, the twenty-four meniliers attempt to keep abreast of student opinion. Responsibility for homecoming preparations — from pre- liminary election supervision to completion of final touches on decorations for her majesty ' s ball — rests with the Student Council. Freshman girls or new upperclass girls wishing to join GAA are not initiated into the club until the second semester. To be ehgible for initiation the girls must make 150 points b ' doing arious activities. The ' are given a sheet at the beginning of the year listing the points gi en for each activity. There is a playnight once every six weeks giving the girls an opportunity to add more points. The intramural manager decides the sport the girls will participate in for that night. In the spring we have a banquet at which time the officers for the coming year are installed. Awards are also given at the banquet. ' hen a girl has attained 1000 points she is awarded a letter and upon attaining two hundred additional points, a pin is gi en and four huntlred atlditional a guard is awarded. , troph ' is gi en to the senior with the highest number of accumulated points abo e 1400. These members brought new and different honors to our school such as the scrapbook trophy award which was attributed to the work of I inda Da is, Jud ' Kantner, Karen Brown, Julia Neimeyer, and Pam Knoch. Another new award was the trophy for third place in Outstanding Chapter in Oliio, which was attributed to the leadership o f Kenneth Burk, our local chapter president, and our adviser, Mr. Carter. The most unique and distinguished honor this year was having our candidate, Jeri Johnson, elected as State Pres- ident. We have participated at a national level in the follow- ing contests; Mr. F. B. L. A., Parliamentary Procedure, the Miss F.B.L.A. contest, and the State President Contest. Our local community has had approximately six hun- dred members that have belonged to our local chapter of F.B.L.A. during the past eleven years. These members have engaged in many worthwhile projects for the ad- vancement of education. The F.B.L.A. iirL:.(nu:iilion seeks to: 1. Develop competent, aggressive business leadersliip. 2. Following Ben Johnson ' s definition of a club — An assembly of good fellows, meeting inider certain condi- tions ' — Senior Science Club was organized for juniors and seniors currenth ' enrolled in chemistry or physics classes. Although much of the activity of tliis group has been social, several field trips added excitement to the business agenda. The campus of Miami University at O.xford, Ohio, and the Armco Steel Foundry at Middle- town, Ohio, were the destination of two recent journies. All field trips must be taken outside of school time. Motion pictures shown at each club meeting further increase the scope of scientific investigation. By using in- dustrial audio-visual aids, SSC members are able to ex- amine the various phases of science more closely than would be practical in a classroom situation. 50 Ricliard Frc - recei ed a Superior rating in state competition for his science project. Ever since tlie beginning of argicultnre, farm ovitli lia e had se eral liasic needs. Some of these needs are to select and train for an occupation, to belong to something worthwhile, to feel that their goals are jiisth ' set and that the ' are within their reach, and to feel that what they are doing makes sense, having a real purpose and value to society. In 1917, the Congress of the United States recognized tlaese basic needs and passed the Smith-Hughes Act which provided for the teaching of vocational agriculture in the local high schools. In the agriculture classes, students learn the most efficient methods of farm management, the latest de ' elopments in agrieultureal research, and to judge the quality as well as the quantity of li estock, crops, and other projects of super- vised farming. .4s agriculture progressed through the influence of tlie Smith-Hughes Act, the farm youth started to form local clubs and groups. Later these local clubs developed into State asso- ciations and then in 192S the first national convention of the Future Farmers of America was held in Kansas City, Mis- som-i. Since that time, the F.F.A. has grown from a mere hand- ful to some 400,000 in the United States and over 12,900 in Ohio. It can justly be called the greatest organization of youth interested in agriculture in the world today. The primary aim of the F.F.A. is the development of rural leadership, citizenship and patriotism. Other goals are to work toward successful establishment in farming occupa- tions, encourage good scholarship, work in a cooperative effort and participate in organized recreational activities — all for the betterment of agriculture. Some of the activities of parti- cipation are: parliamentar ' procedure, public speaking, land and li cstock judging, and other contests. The FHA motto, Toward New Horizons, is a chal- lenge which reminds members that their contributions to home life today will influence homes drey will have to- morrow. There are three degrees of achievement: Junior Home- making, symbohzed by a key; Chapter Homemaking, sym- bolized by a scroll; and State Homemaking, symbolized by a torch. The colors of FHA are red, signifying strength, and white, signifying sincerity. The FHA pin may be worn by active and associate members, honorary members, and Chapter parents. Class of ' 64 Once upon a time sonu ' little green freshmen got to- gether to elect themselves some officers. Jim Elshire, Judy Truesdale, Vicki Schaefers, and Vlike Moots were winners of the contest. Time passed, the green tint faded, and it was election time again. As sophomores, the now only slightly chartreuse students elected Bob Ankerman, class president; Steve Bailey, vice president; Bett e Seitz to secretary; and Sheila Ruck, service director. Dining this year Nancy Copeland represented the class in the Homecoming court. Realizing that their liigh school career was half o er, the new juniors were once again confronted with the re- sponsibility of electing class officers. Fearless leader. Presi- dent Fritz Kuck headed the class during this busy year. Assisting him were Vice president, Judy Truesdale; Secre- tary, Vicki Schaefers; and Service Director, Alice Emerson. Presentation of the class play, selection of class rings, and excitement of the spring prom convinced the harried juniors that they were, indeed upperclassmen. Jean-Clare Sims was selected to represent the junior class at homecoming. Now the eager beavers are completing their last year of high school as seniors, and the serious side of life ' s rcsponsibilit ' is about to open before them.
