Bitter, freezing winds that caused State Won't Wapahani students enjoyed nearly four weeks of added vacation due to school closings because of bad snow conditions on the roads. Most ofthe roads drifted shut with drifts higher than cars. After the roads were opened most were still just one lane. Students at Ball State University, however, are due back in class today, gfter a day off due to the cold on Mon- ay. The arctic-like climate has taken its toll on some of the schools, causing water pipes to freeze and break. Muncie Community Schools, faced with reduced amounts of natural gas, extended the cancellation through at least Wednesday. Superintendent of Schools Don Slauter said the closing was armounced to conserve on fuel. He was unsure when school would re- sume, saying weather conditions and gas supplies would determine the re- opening date. V A water main burst in the attic of Selma Middle School late last week, affecting three floors and damaging light fixtures. Liberty-Perry Schools Superintendent Bud Richman said, however, that water problems there have been fixed. A bus driven bg Lothair Oxley of Farmland was hung up on road 875-East between 600 an. 700-South with about 15 students Oxley walked to Forrest Stanley' home, another bus driver, and got . tractor which he pushed the bus ou with. You couldn't see anything o there, and the roads were just corll pletely shut, Oxley said. The stu dents stayed at the Stanley home fo about an hour while the storm pr gressed outside. Finally, Oxley co pleted his route, delivering the la child at 7:30 p.m. Another Liberty-Perry driven Charles Conwell, became hung ui along with another bus on road 273 South. Although a tractor freed the from the snow drift, Conwell's moto later flooded. Conwell made it to th- last home on the route, where he lei his bus. Conwell's son Kevin, another bu driver, walked 15 children to his homf after his bus became stuck in tht snow. It took three four-wheel-drivl vehicles plus a tractor to free the Con well bus.
