THE LEGEN OF 197 7 WAPAHANI HIGH SCHOOL SELMA, INDIANA 47383 LETS TAKEA LOOK 'QP if LOOK! Who are we? We are individuals. with our own ideals and dreams. But we are also a group. Each of us is a member ourselves. We are Wapahani. Wapahani is us, and we are it. Teachers and students, together and separate, working together to make Wapahani rise into greatness. Although we are individuals, we are groups too. Band, choir, Drama and speech, Deca, Honor Society are all a part of us. Activities help to brighten stu- dents life. Band candy, choir, selling fruit, Deca drag race, Honor Society spirit week, Drama, club presenta- tions, and speech meets all take up students time, and for many, have become a way of life. School isn,t all work, as unreal as that may seem. Sadie Hawkins dance, Prom, sports, convocations all contribute to student routine of student life. So, now that we realize who we are, let's take a look at ourselves. 3 my -V H dllnununnqpp 4nununnn-qj M ' f S? The presentation of the queen, Sally Campbell and her escort, Jim Lawerence, was at ll:00 p.m. First runner-up was Leisa Linderman, and 2nd runner-up was Robin Fletcher. The ballroom was decorated to reflect a scene from Paris. A large mirror ball was suspended over the dance floor with a water fountain underneath it. Tables were decorated with red and white checked tablecloths with candle- dripped wine bottles and stemmed goblets. Artificial hedges and street lamps helped create the atmosphere. The class of,76 has spent many days at Wapahani, most of which have already been forgotten. Somewhere throughout school they have been touched by a friend, a teacher, or even an event, that moment will stay with them forever. These memories, along with memories of people talking, laughing, classes changing, senior study hall, and, of course, lunch time, will not fade away easily. They will always be somewhere in the corners of their mindsf, As the formal graduation ceremonies ended and the more carefree celebrating was about to start, the graduates began wondering about the future. All ofa f' Mi ff 'rl , .,,.. v sudden, the future seemed closer than ever before. Some students knew exactly where they were going, yet others still hadn,t decided what was right for them: college, finding a job, traveling, getting married, or 'fdoing their thing. All students had dreams and a few were ready to make them come true. More important than the future was the present. On this final day they were looking into the faces of many people they might never see again. That last farewell seemed more definite than ever before. As the students said their good-byes, they all had the same question in mind, Do you know where you're going to?,' Above: Carroll Conner speaks to teachers, parents, and classmates at graduation. Ylll Performance With Pride The raider band marched it's way through another summer. With a lot of hard work, they continued their traditional high rankings among the state fair contenders by earning a fourth place position. Heat and rain made the day uncomfortable, but did not stop the band or crowd. Both groups carried out usual band day activities. The crowd watched and cheered as the band condensed all their summer 5 ? be 5: L , . practices into a four minute show. Again the feeling of pride came over everyone as they watched the band march up to the starting line. Colorful flags. twirling rifles and sparkling knives added a touch of excitement to the bands music. At the end of the show the crowd was on its feet. It was one of many standing ovations the band received throughout the year for performing with pride. -'T-7 l K . 'I-in--v Q NV' ' Q . 1 ' I ,, I 'lmao-.f I un-.An..J U. un-.aa...J 1lYJl5i' Q! Students at Ball State University, however, are due back in class today, gfter a day off due to the cold on Mon- ay. The arctic-like climate has taken its toll on some of the schools, causing water pipes to freeze and break. Muncie Community Schools, faced with reduced amounts of natural gas, extended the cancellation through at least Wednesday. Superintendent of Schools Don Slauter said the closing was armounced to conserve on fuel. He was unsure when school would re- sume, saying weather conditions and gas supplies would determine the re- opening date. V A water main burst in the attic of Selma Middle School late last week, affecting three floors and damaging light fixtures. Liberty-Perry Schools Superintendent Bud Richman said, however, that water problems there have been fixed. ' All Delaware County schoolchi dren made it home on the bus Wedne: day, but the last one didn't get the until 8 p.m. At least they won't have? go out again today. Northwest winds swept into Ea Central Indiana as many drivers weii on their homeward routes Wednee day, eliminating all visibility an drifting north-south roads shut. Som of the young passengers were force to seek refuge along the way. Liberty-Perry Schools, in soutlr east Delaware County, was th hardest hit by the weather, with a least three school buses getting stuc. in the afternoon snow. A bus driven bg Lothair Oxley of Farmland was hung up on road 875-East between 600 an. 700-South with about 15 students Oxley walked to Forrest Stanley' home, another bus driver, and got . tractor which he pushed the bus ou with. You couldn't see anything o there, and the roads were just corll pletely shut, Oxley said. The stu dents stayed at the Stanley home fo about an hour while the storm pr gressed outside. Finally, Oxley co pleted his route, delivering the la child at 7:30 p.m. Another Liberty-Perry driven Charles Conwell, became hung ui along with another bus on road 273 South. Although a tractor freed the from the snow drift, Conwell's moto later flooded. Conwell made it to th- last home on the route, where he lei his bus. Conwell's son Kevin, another bu driver, walked 15 children to his homf after his bus became stuck in tht snow. It took three four-wheel-drivl vehicles plus a tractor to free the Con well bus. Under the leadership ofMrs. Donna Pcrsonett the Swing Choir. Girls Ensemble, Girls Choir and Concert Choir have all per- formed in our area at one time or another. The choirs kept with tradition by performing at the annual Christmas and Variety shows. The Swing Choir traveled a great deal as they performed far and near. The Swing Choir is one ofthe most exclusive of the choirs as there are only sixteen members and one must have an au- dition before they're even consid- ered. History were studying about the development of America from Columbus up to Ford and Carter. Even Sophomores had a chance to study some form of history in the World History class taught by Mr. Rees. Without School Board members Busdrivers, Nurses, Custodians, and Secretaries, the school would be in a continual state of confusion. School Board members touch the lives of the students at Wapahani everyday with the decisions that they make. Secretaries keep the school run- ning smoothly as necessary. Nurses.
