IN THAT WARRIOR TRADITION Pacing The Pack As the students and faculty of Wando High School began the 86-87 school year, many changes were noticed. First was the difference in the number of classes and the amount of time spent in each class. The day at Wando consisted of seven periods that lasted 56 minutes each. There were many schedule conflicts this school year. Students and faculty found that most all of the classes were overcrowded. We at Wando also faced the confusion of a bell system which was no longer a bell but a tone. Many students were tardy consistently to class after lunch because the tone could not be heard, until outside speakers were installed in October. At the end of the '85 school year and the beginning of the '86 year, we learned that we could claim some of the finest teachers and coaches. Coach Jim Craven was named Golf Coach of the Year. Coach Craven has done a great job with the Golf Team, which won the State Championship last spring. Mrs. Beverly Varnado, who teaches English to tenth and eleventh grade students, was named Charleston County Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Varnado is also the co-director of the Charleston Area Writing Project. Wando is proud to have such fine faculty! Tragically, Wando faced a fire last June on the night of graduation. Although the damage was not severe, some damage was done to the library. Many books were either burned or received smoke damage. The damages were repaired before the ’86 school year began. Besides being teacher of the year. Mrs Varnado is The Mt. Pleasant Fire Dept, stopped a fire in the very spirited Media Center before it did much damage. -{XJ — Opening T 26007

A SPECIAL PERSON Dedication It’s hard to lead others to capture the spirit of classes, places, events, faculty, and students with professionalism and with originality for nineteen consecutive years. It is also not easy to be the perennial yearbook faculty advisor in addition to serving as Department Head of Social Studies, in addition to teaching Advanced Placement United States History, in addition to instructing the regular complement of other courses. Dru Berkhan has done these things at Moultrie and Wando, and she has done them extremely well. Can anyone imagine the students photographed, the pictures and captions submitted, the students motivated and cajoled, the staffs praised and prodded? Can anyone imagine the time and effort involved in nineteen years of deadlines, payments, ad sales, yearbook arrivals in June, deliveries of the books on a Sunday every April, Mr. and Miss Wando contests, Senior Superlatives and Halls of Fame? But there were funny times, too. I remember one year Dru went through all the garbage cans at Wando and at the county waste depository. She was looking for some color photographs that had been inadvertantly thrown away. They were never found, but Dru made sure they were never missed. There is no telling the hours and the “missed” vacations and holidays that were used on school and yearbook business. Dru Berhan took things seriously and that’s why things were produced by her and for us with pride and style and with a labor that found satisfaction in service to others. So, in remembrance of things past, consider how much many of us owe to this remarkable woman, this conscientious and exemplary teacher. We miss you on the yearbook advisory, Dru. Nineteen years is no small amount of time in our lives or yours. Many lives have been briefly chronicled and made memorable by your work. Thanks in large measure to you, I can already see these young people coming to reunions and revisiting the past, paging through their old Legends to reflect on friends and events. You’ve made our traditions tangible, Dru, and we appreciate you more than words can say.
