First was the difference in the number of classes and the amount of time spent in each class. The day at Wando consisted of seven periods that lasted 56 minutes each. There were many schedule conflicts this school year. Students and faculty found that most all of the classes were overcrowded. We at Wando also faced the confusion of a bell system which was no longer a bell but a tone. Many students were tardy consistently to class after lunch because the tone could not be heard, until outside speakers were installed in October. At the end of the '85 school year and the beginning of the '86 year, we learned that we could claim some of the finest teachers and coaches. Coach Jim Craven was named Golf Coach of the Year. Coach Craven has done a great job with the Golf Team, which won the State Championship last spring. Mrs. Beverly Varnado, who teaches English to tenth and eleventh grade students, was named Charleston County Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Varnado is also the co-director of the Charleston Area Writing Project. Wando is proud to have such fine faculty! Tragically, Wando faced a fire last June on the night of graduation. Although the damage was not severe, some damage was done to the library. Many books were either burned or received smoke damage. The damages were repaired before the ’86 school year began. Besides being teacher of the year. Mrs Varnado is The Mt. Pleasant Fire Dept, stopped a fire in the very spirited Media Center before it did much damage. -{XJ — Opening T 26007 Coach Craven. Coach of the Year, presents the 1986 State Golf Champions and Trophy. We are letting the heavens know Wando has school spirit. Angela Allen and Chad Tucker are friends reunited after the summer. Opening---| 3 | A SPECIAL PERSON Dedication It’s hard to lead others to capture the spirit of classes, places, events, faculty, and students with professionalism and with originality for nineteen consecutive years. It is also not easy to be the perennial yearbook faculty advisor in addition to serving as Department Head of Social Studies, in addition to teaching Advanced Placement United States History, in addition to instructing the regular complement of other courses. Dru Berkhan has done these things at Moultrie and Wando, and she has done them extremely well. Can anyone imagine the students photographed, the pictures and captions submitted, the students motivated and cajoled, the staffs praised and prodded? Can anyone imagine the time and effort involved in nineteen years of deadlines, payments, ad sales, yearbook arrivals in June, deliveries of the books on a Sunday every April, Mr. and Miss Wando contests, Senior Superlatives and Halls of Fame? But there were funny times, too. I remember one year Dru went through all the garbage cans at Wando and at the county waste depository. She was looking for some color photographs that had been inadvertantly thrown away. They were never found, but Dru made sure they were never missed. There is no telling the hours and the “missed” vacations and holidays that were used on school and yearbook business. Dru Berhan took things seriously and that’s why things were produced by her and for us with pride and style and with a labor that found satisfaction in service to others. So, in remembrance of things past, consider how much many of us owe to this remarkable woman, this conscientious and exemplary teacher. We miss you on the yearbook advisory, Dru. Nineteen years is no small amount of time in our lives or yours. Many lives have been briefly chronicled and made memorable by your work. Thanks in large measure to you, I can already see these young people coming to reunions and revisiting the past, paging through their old Legends to reflect on friends and events. You’ve made our traditions tangible, Dru, and we appreciate you more than words can say. ___ Kara Gwynne-Vaughan 4 |— Opening ----------------------------- MISS FOR IN APPRECIATION OF DRUSCILLA BERKHAN NINETEEN YEARS SERVICE m FINAL YEAR Seniors Ever since we were six or seven, the routine has been the same. Fall marked the beginning of school and school brought summer to an end. For twelve years, this pattern remained unbroken. Of course, we grew during all those years and we changed; but, when fall came, we went back to school. Patterns, however, do not last forever. Graduation is a time of change. We lose the routines of change. We lose the routines to which we have become accustomed and go on to something different and new. Instead of leaving this school for a short vacation, we leave it forever. And where do we go from here? College or work; independence or continued dependence ... ? What do we do now? This decision we have probably made already. The future, though, is still scary and is still known. We have new tasks to complete and new goals to reach for. The old pattern is gone. A new one is already being made ... These three guys are wild about the band’s first trip to play, but it was cancelled because of rain. David Hoffman is always flirting, but now he has gone too far! Seniors Seniors---- 7 o % step closer Sophomores The class of 1989 is developing in the true Warrior spirit. With our growing knowledge of Wando’s traditions, we are beginning to excel in many ways. We are well- rounded in sports, academics, and the arts. We are proud to be a part of Wando, proving that our spirit for our school cannot be surpassed. Anything to help, but we'd rather be riding the waves. What are you doing? Sophomores ONE MORE TO GO Juniors The shot is fired, the flag is raised, and we are off and running. Striving to make our way to the front, Juniors get caught in the middle rung of the ladder to a successful graduation. The Junior year of high school is one of the toughest years and it is definitely the year with the heaviest academic workloads. We Juniors are reaching for the final goal of graduation. We have a close view of the finish line, but we are still not quite there. Juniors have run only half the course, but we will be next to cross the finish line. Tradd Rosebrock enjoys his job as an office attendent. Vincent Rivers takes notes in geometry The Junior Class is very school-spirited. A NEW BEGINNING Freshmen The freshmen class is walking in the moccasins of great warriors, and it isn’t easy to be a freshman at the beginning of the school year. The first thing we realize is that Wando is not middle school anymore. This is a new place with more people and harder subjects. As the year goes on, we make more friends, adjust to challenges and difficulties, and begin to notice life’s little pleasures. Wando is fast becoming an exciting and interesting place to be. Caught in the act. What is the answer to number 6?” Shelly Hassell cannot believe her picture is being taken. It seems Shannon Dee Dee would rather horse around then learn about physical education. Freshmen ONE MORE BRIGHT LOOK Alice Sun tells Angela Allen about a cute guy. Colby. Brad. Johnny, and Patrick are always clown- ing around at lunch. Robbie Parker studies over his homework. Someone waiting for a schedule change was a famil- iar sight this year. 14 | — Student Life Millicent Clemons smiles while talking to a friend. Student Life COMING HOME Homecoming Activities Warriors prepared for the Homecoming activities during a three day period. Wednesday was School Color Day followed by Costume Day on Thursday, and Friday was Dress-up Day. Wednesday night started off with a caravan from the Isle of Palms to Wando Stadium which was followed by a pep-rally and a bon fire. And a final note: the Seniors won the week long spirit contest. Ashton Suttle and friends decorate the famous Sharkmobile for the caravan. □D — Opening Jessie Williams must have thought there was a Mr Davis crowns Laura Todd as Homecoming Queen, beauty contest tonight. What a great time! Did you ever think you could cram so much fun into one night? Once again the Jr. Sr. was held at the Omar Shrine Temple on the battery in downtown Charleston. The 1986 prom was decorated along the theme of Old Charleston. Rainbow Row was at the entrance and twinkling lights were in the trees; flowers were on the tables and balloons were in the air. Prime Time played the music and everyone was there! It was a wonderful evening and not a soul left disappointed. Memories of this May 3rd night will most definitely last and last. HOLDING THINGS TOGETHER ADMINISTRATION When asked about Wando '86-87, Mr. Scott had these replies: Q: What do you think of the students at Wando this year? A: A great group. Each year students seem to be more serious about school and their future. It’s gratifying to see this. Q: How do you think the accreditation from the Southern Association will help the graduates of 1987? A: This simply means that any graduate of WHS can apply to any college of university in the U.S. with the assurance that their transcripts will be accepted. Southern Association accreditation, a part of the National Association of Colleges and Schools, is the highest accreditation available to our school. Mr. Quentin L. Scott. TEACHER OF THE YEAR In March of 1986 each school in Charleston County had the opportunity to select a member of its teaching staff to represent the school in the competition for Charleston County Teacher of the Year. The Wando faculty nominated, voted on the ballot of nominees and selected Mrs. Beverly Varnado and four runners-up. In April, 1986, the Wando administration and Mrs. Varnado completed the official application form. This form and those from all of the other applicants in Charleston County were reviewed by a county committee composed of representatives of the PTSO, County School Board, students, parents, administrators. Higher Ed., and community business leaders. Twenty outstanding teachers were selected by the initial committee. Wando’s nominee, Mrs. Varnado, was one of these five. The five teachers prepared and submitted a scrapbook in July and were interviewed in August by a committee selected by the Trident Chamber of Commerce. On September 10, this committee selected Mrs. Varnado as Charleston County Teacher of the Year. In October, the State Committee elected five teachers from those submitted by each county and these five finalists were interviewed in Columbia on October 23. From all of the fine teachers nominated from throughout the state of South Carolina, Wando’s Mrs. Varnado was chosen as the South Carolina State Teacher of the Year. Her winning scrapbook has now been submitted to the National Teacher of the Year committee. Academics' 31 FACULTY Mrs. Marianne Albrecht English Dept BA Columbia College M Ed. Troy Follak, Millicent Clemons As we realize that our four years at Wando have almost come to an end, it seems as though it was just yesterday when we were awkward, scared freshman anxiously awaiting our gradua- tion. Now that the time is actually here, we are a bit apprehen- sive about going out beyond Wando, the high school that has become a special, memorable part of our youth. Although these years have passed, we will never forget the ties we have to Wando High School — our true friends, our respected teachers, and many unforgettable experiences. These thoughts are sad, and yet, we must not dwell on them too much because we have goals to reach, success to achieve, and dreams to live. The Class of '87 is the best class that will ever be and we thank you Wando, for your caring, your love, and your never ending devotion to us. We have shown this not only by winning the spirit award at the first pep rally, but also through our athletic and academic achievements. The class of ’88 will continue to interpret the meaning of spirit, academic achievements, and leadership among its students. We have made it through two years of hard work and dedication which will definitely pay off in our Senior year. KEEP THE EPfPfT UP Varsity Football Coach Harris’ Varsity Warriors put in an average season this year. David Garris did a great job quarterbacking against our top rivals. Other standouts included John Popelka, Dolfey Jenkins, Cliff Toner, and Greg Keith. This year was their rebuilding year. Although the Warriors’ record was below average (4-6), they came on strong in the second half of their season. Senior starters on both offense and defense will be greatly missed; however, the returning squad hope to lead next year’s team to a bright and prosperous future. Zane Skinner confirms Cliff Toner's touchdown with raised hands. The Warrior defense swarms all over the field. Brett Hammes punts for injured Eric Hooper. V. The coaches must also be noted for their great coaching abilities. Once the team entered the field the fans had faith in the well- prepared group of ladies. One of the players watches the game closely. These players begin celebrating early. Powderpuff TO m AGONY OF PEFEA T On ihe girls' night out to show their athletic prowess, the Junior-Sophomore team was unable to defeat the Senior-Freshmen team in the '86 powder puff game. Even in the team photography, their appearance, like their playing, seemed a bit timid and hazy. One of the players said. We did our best and that’s all we were able to do. but next year we'll do better when we have a few new players to change our luck. Unfortunately, the defeat was not just a lucky shot for the opposing team which obviously won on their experience and knowledge of the game. The Junior-Sophomore coaches were supportive of the teams' effort and enthusiasm And most of all. the coaches were still pleased with the performance of their girts and were quick to say so. hoping for better luck in next year's rematch. Powderpuff VOLLEYBALL The '86 Girls' Volleyball Team has proven to be “tops once again, ending the season with a 13 and 12 record. Last year, the long time coach, Linda White, was replaced by Alexis Homer, a graduate and former player from the University of South Carolina. The girls worked hard through the season's practices with their new coach and advanced to third place in the region tournament. Senior Tashia Greene was selected to play for the All-Region 6AAAA Team. This season started Miss Homer on what we all hope will be a bright and successful coaching career. Mr. Loftus, the coach, was pleased with the results. A few of the team members said they should have won more games, but all they could do was their best. Hopefully, next year’s team will have some of the aspects from this year’s team. If not, I’m sure they’ll have a good season. Amy Barrineau prepares to throw the ball. President Reagan freed some hostages by selling arms to Iran. Money collected from this deal was deposited in Swiss bank accounts and later withdrawn by Central American rebels to buy arms. The deal was a direct violation of Congressional policy of dealing with terrorism. One part of the World News that hit close to home was the nuclear melt-down in Chernoble. U.S.S.R.
