riNG POINT WANDO HIGH 1560 Mathis Ferry Road Mount Pleasant South Carolina 29464 Volume 13 School Colors: Cardinal, black, and white School Mascot: the Warrior Size: approximately 1600 students Athletic Division: 6-AAAA il These Friendly Faces! Any passerby on Mathis Ferry Road might look at Wando and not think any- thing about it. Sure, it's a school, but to those of us who spend six hours a day. one hundred and eighty days a year here, we know there is much more than meets the eye. To be in the school for even one day, one finds out that it is truly the people that make the school — there are so many different types, nothing else could compare! If it was not for the variety of the stu- dent body, imagine how boring school would be! There are the studious types, athletic types, crazy types, quiet types: the list is endless! Also expected in a school with 1600 students is the countless interests and activities; working, play- ing sports, and traveling are some examples. Despite the many semmingly opposite groups of people and all the various interests, we all have one point in common: We are the Wando Warriors! TOP: K.C. tells Kara and Kathi about her “terrific Tim.” Actually being able to get in your locker is a rare chance because the halls are usually so crowd- ed: Beth. Brett, and Mike take advantage of the situation. Jeff and Allen use the five minutes between classes to catch up on what has been happen- ing. RIGHT: “The numbers are uno. dos. tres says Mrs. Hurd as she reviews her Spanish 2 students. 2 OPENING Rick and friends pal around during first lunch. What is this friendly foursome hiding behind their smiles? u ivzRsn These guys beat the heat by standing in the shade by A-pod during first lunch ABOVE: No. these freshmen aren’t behind bars; they're just waiting for the dreadful “Wando Phys. Ed.” uniforms, the next best thing. Friendly faces can be found almost anywhere at WHS. OPENING 3 Inside Look At Wando Because we come to school ev- eryday, we often fail to realize the special points that separate Wando from any other Charleston County school. The most obvious ex- ample of this is the Honors Program. Although many feel there are still some incongruities to be worked out, the program's purpose is to create a strong, challenging curriculum for those advanced students who want to utilize their abilities. Wando is the first school in the county to take this step toward academic excellence, and next year’s graduating class will be the first one with Honors Diplomas. In addi- tion to the honors courses, many AP classes are offered, namely in English, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, and U.S. and European History. Some students still choose to take classes at the Col- lege of Charleston. Wando is also the only school in the county to offer four languages: Spanish, French, Latin, and German. As a result of last year's evaluation, Wando is expected to be accredited by the Southern Association of Col- leges and Schools (SACS) sometime in 1985. The administrators and faculty worked extremely hard on this last year and the students appreciate their dedication. Jody Legare captures the attention of his audi- ence. His drama class was doing an exercise in imagination and speaking expressively. Many students take Mrs. Clift's marine biology class in their junior year One reason for its popu- larity is that its subject matter is easy to relate to because we live in a coastal city. 4 OPENING Doug Marek studies surfing. Although the li- brary is mainly for research and studying, stu- dents who finish their work early will always find something else to do The door of opportunity is open to every student; Sandy and Dana have taken advantage of it in the Business Department. Crowded halls are all-too-familiar scenes be- tween classes. One wonders if it is possible to get to his next class in just five minutes! It’s a wonder that our teachers can be so pleas- ant. considering they have such rough jobs! OPENING 5 eniors — Finally On Top!! A Alter four tough years, it is finally the year of the CLASS OF 86. At last we are above all the other classes, but we cannot help but look back on the previous years with a feeling of sadness. It is hard to believe how fast the time has flown — only a short time ago we were FRESHMEN, the ones getting lost in the halls, the quietest class at the pep rallies, and the “new kids on the block.” But through three years of killer classes, teachers, and tests, we have managed to excel in every aspect. Our class has pulled together after a slow start to win the spirit award two years and shows no inten- tion of relinquishing the title of “Most Spirited Class. This year promises to be one of great memories (Junior Senior, Senior Cruise) as we realize we will not be together next year. But for now. we are ruling the school as the CLASS OF 86!! Jennifer Cichoki tells another of her wild itories. to the amusement of her friends. Julie studies for her next test, while Kerie hates just thinking about it. Noel Bentle concentrates intently on her music. Norman lives up to his reputation as biggest flirt any place, any time. 6 OPENING Incredible though it may seem. Seniors are still living after four years of school lunches! ABOVE: DOUBLE TROUBLE — Jennifer Orvm and Jennifer Cichoki hug and mug for the cam- era. Kim Wilson and Leslie Miller don’t mind school too much, as long as they have a lunch break to relax in. Laura and Mary — best friends FOREVER! These two aren’t camera-shy! Tom Schuman and Westy Westmoreland are their usual friendly selves. Despite any distractions. Terri-ky manages to take notes in Marine Biology OPENING 7 The sophomore class gives its all in supporting Wando. Elizabeth Craven prepares to participate in the Hartsville Hick eating contest. Deron Nettles goes to the board in an eflort to solve a problem. Not all business courses are easy, as Mary Heath is finding out. 8 OPENING Q ophomores Take On Challenging V Year The Sophomore year seems al- most like an extension of the Freshmen year except for the new title, the harder classes, and the relief of not being picked on. Sophomores find that school has its fun moments as they become more a part of the activities and adjust to the expectations placed on them. They realize that their freshmen year is over, and now they must start to decide more of their goals that will guide them through the rest of high school. They also realize that they are now in those long-awaited “high school years.” r - Many sophomores like Kirk Bonnoitt find out that you can learn the history of the world in one year! John McQueen thinks he understands the Span- ish phrase, but he listens to make sure. Sean Adams does some last-minute studying for a surprise World History test. OPENING 9 Junior Class Has Many “Firsts” This year's Junior class has. like most Junior classes, experienced many firsts. like going to the Junior Senior, taking the SAT. and getting rings. But there are also some other firsts this year’s class has to its credit It is the class with which the honors pro- gram was initiated, and they are taking the diffi- cult courses designed for advanced students. It has been said that the Junior year is always the hardest, so without a doubt, this class can attest to that This year's class is also the first required to have twenty two credits to graduate. Overall, the Junior year is the busiest and har- dest. as one finally starts to decide on colleges and his future; this seems like an insurmountable task to some, but the choices usually become clearer as time goes on. It sometimes feels like it is impossible for anyone to survive the tough classes most Juniors take, but it is always worth it in the end when one can say he's a Senior! Lunch is the best time for these Juniors to catch up on the latest gossip about everything! Anna Hamrick pretends to do her English classwork. 10 OPENING Troy takes a break from yearbook layouts to find the photographer practicing his aim. Margaret, you look tired and practice hasn’t even started yet! Cliff lets his point be known and George doesn't attempt to disagree. Alice Sun only wishes that class could be like this all year! Todd gives Julie a hug during halftime — just friends of course! Julie Swift lends a back instead of a hand to help a friend. AHA! The photographer found the hiding place of April Helms and Kevin Huthinson. ABOVE: Hey. someone has to eat the school’s lunch! or so says Zane Skinner. The smiles on Kerri’s and Kristy’s faces must mean that the Warriors are winning another football game. OPENING 11 Matthew Whiteside takes a peek at his note- book. A typical freshman — exhausted after one class! Cohn Somers sets his mind to the difficult task of playing the xylophone. WANQq c) H pn These freshmen proudly display their spanking- new gym uniforms — they won't be this clean for long! 12 OPENING Warrior World As the upperclassmen move up a year, a new class of freshmen comes to Wando and has to adjust to a totally different world, their home for the next four years. This year’s class had established its identity almost before school start- ed: it was to be THE largest fresh- men class ever at Wando, 600 strong. That did not mean that it would not be totally unlike the other classes in their first years. The stu- dents had to adjust to the new school — familiar questions heard that first week included Where's the gym?” and How do you get to U-pod? — the new teachers, new friends, and in general the many ex- pectations placed on them. Of course, there is also the treatment from upperclassmen that freshmen have grown to fear. In addition to the dirty looks, and offers to buy elevator tickets, the freshmen have had to learn to ignore the directions from Seniors — If you don't see the swimming pool, you're not at the right gym. Freshmen quickly adjust to the Warrior life and prove that they are an important part of Wando. John Howell reflects on his fun night and another Wando Warrior victory. OPENING 13 Warriors have DEFINITELY got spirit! It is evident everywhere and is a major reason for the success of our athletic teams. We show our spirit in many ways: by yelling our hearts out at pep rallies, taking part in extracurricular activities, and even by buying spirit ribbons. Students can al- ways be found supporting the Warrior teams of football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, and wrestling. W ■ ■ ell, Have You Got That Spirit? Students follow that great arrow to get to the Seniors prove it again — the Class of ‘86 is THE pep rally. BEST! WHS- 1 — these cowbells are used to cheer on the team and make noise! 14 OPENING The cheerleaders show how to do the worm. The Senior worm barely crosses the finish line in one piece to win the class competition. The guys take it easy at the pep rally but know they’ve got a big night ahead of them. The Junior class says YO!” OPENING 15 Warriors Can Be Found Everywhere Although Wando covers all of the relatively small East Cooper area, there are numerous places where Warriors can be found other than the school itself. Many students work after school at familiar places like K-Mart, Wal-Mart, or fast food restaurants. Those who do not work spend their time doing schoolwork or taking part in sports or clubs. Popular spots that Warriors frequent on the weekends in- clude the mall, anywhere downtown, football games, and the beach. Warriors like Julie Todd. David Graham, and DeDe Bishop can always be found at one of the local beaches. fm This aerial view of the Wando campus makes the school seem small, but due to the increase in students, plans are being discussed to add a new pod. You can always count on getting help in the main office, be it from a monitor or a secretary. Although we only have five minutes to change classes. Warriors are never too busy to show school spirit! After a hard morning of classes, many students sometimes stand twenty minutes in line for one of the famous “school lunches.” 16 OPENING rThe Point Is Moultrie Constituent District 2 Board Of Trustees Wando High School opened in 1973 and has increased in size ever since. The student body is expected to be close to 1600 this year. This is the only high school in District 2 of Charleston County. Mr. William H. Gilden is Area Assistant Supertendent, and Dr. Ronald A. McWhirt is County Superinten- dent. Mrs. Susan Mellichamp is the Chair- person of the District 2 School Board. The other members are Mrs. Sherry Martschink, Rev. Louis Johnson, Mrs. Cathy Joyner, Mrs. Judy Thompson. Mr William H. Gilden. Area Assistant Superintendent left to right: Mrs. Judy Thompson. Mrs. Cathy Joyner. Mrs Sherry Martschink. Mrs. Susan Mellichamp: not shown Rev Louis Johnson. 18 ADMINISTRATION Administration Q: What changes are expected tor the 85- 86 school year? Teachers are expected to do more than ever before in the 1985 86 school year. A time of adjustment will be necessary to help us all cope with less personal resources (teachers) per student, more than ever be- fore. Teacher shortages are a real problem to some of our programs. The Effective Schools Movement requires that we set up a Program of Effective Teaching Training, monitor Teachers' classes more, have more contact with parents, become more involved with School Business partnership, and con- tinue a school improvement program. All of the above are direct results of the Educa- tional Improvement Act. Q. What is the status of our acceditation from the Southern Association? We expect to get an all-clear on October 21, 1985. We will then be presented to the SACS Regional Committee as a candidate for full accreditation and recognition at the SACS Convention in New Orleans in De- cember 1985. — Mr. Scott — Mr. Ouentin L. Our class is noted for it’s numer- ous academic and school oriented ac- complishments. Our class has been highly school spirited, athletically in- clined, and goal oriented. Our memo- ries and achievements will last us a lifetime and will always be an integral part of the Wando we leave behind us. Even though graduation will be sep- arating all of us soon, our memories will last forever and keep us all close to- gether in our hearts. Although this fun- damental chapter of our lives is coming to an end, we must look to the future, progress, and pursue our dreams. ... Cathy Canup reflects on her long-awaited gradu- ation. Senior Class president Doug Heath fought the strong winds, but finally decided to deliver his speech without his cap. 4 SKI I €S III H MS While taking off my jacket, cumberbund and tie. I ended my prom night with a deep and heavy sigh. I then laid down and started to recall. The factors that made this night a ball. First there was an awesome band, called Ninth Row. Who aided our dance with their musical show. And also the wonderful Omar Shrine Temple. Which held all 600 of us. oh quite simple. Then there was the battery and the starlit sky. Which made a romantic evening for the lovers passing by. And who could forget the candlelight dinner. That caused us guy’s wallets to get thinner and thinner. But guys, was it not all worth it. for all of this. Especially if you got a “goodbye kiss”. So my evening closes, after the girl is taken home. And I am back in my bed. where I lie all alone. And remembering the prom title, as my eyelids come down I thought to myself, this was truly “A Night On The Town.” .. Al Causey Richard Aydlette and Le Anne Jackson spin into action on the dance floor. The long line for that awaited picture that will last a lifetime. Junior Warriors Class Of ’87 The Juniors have definitely proven themselves to be the elite of academics, sports, and good times. I’m sure this tradition will continue to next year as the class of ’87 becomes reality. Our school spirit and pride has really shown and the hard work has paid off. Good luck and good times! ... The following questions were asked in an interview to inform Warriors of their similarities and differences to teenagers around the world. What do you think about Americans and their attitudes? Carlberg: “I like Americans and I do like their attitudes; they're always so kind and help with everything.” Woessner: “Friendly, open, interested, kind of chaotic, and always in a hurry. What do you think about American fashions? How do they compare with those in your country? Andersen: There is not a big differ- ence between the Swedish and Ameri- can fashion. What you have more of here are sweatpants and sweatshirts.” Myyrinmaa: Here fashion is much be- hind! What is your impression of American teenagers? Andersen: “Outgoing, positive, and in- terested to hear about other coun- tries.” What do you like about Wando the most? The least? Sylvester Stallone had double success this year with his movie hits “Rambo: First Blood. Part H” and “Rocky IV” (picture: Time magazine) Many people tuned in every Friday night at 10 to watch Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson on one of the trendiest and most popular television shows. “Miami Vice. (picture: Time magazine) In reviewing 1985, many images come to mind. It was a year charac- terized by terrorism and hijackings, natural disasters like the Mexican earthquakes and Colombian muds- lides. and continuing starvation in Afri- ca. It was also the worst year for air travel, with four major crashes killing thousands of people. AIDS scared so- ciety into awareness, especially after Rock Hudson’s death. South Africa erupted over the apartheid policies of the white-minority government. However. 1985 was not all bad. In the summer, the Live Aid concert was held to benefit the Ethiopan starvation Bottom: the Statue of Liberty underwent lots of renovation and scaffolding in preparation for its 100-year birthday in 1986. (picture: AP Photos) Bruce Springsteen experienced worldwide popularity in 1985. Other favorite male singers were Sting and Phil Collins, (picture: Time magazine) crisis; and the Farm Aid concert was held to provide some relief for our own farmers. In November, president Rea- gan met with Soviet leader Gorbachev for arms talks. The Kansas City Royals won the World Series, and the Chicago Bears won the Super Bowl. CLOSING 207 Right: Scott Scogin wears at least two fashionable things: a jeans jacket and a paisley sweater. Susan Newton is dressed in the familiar outfit of a big shirt, pearls, and a jeans jacket. ich In Style 208 CLOSING Earl White shows his own style with his earmuffs and leather jacket. Bottom right: The asymmetrical haircut was seen on girls and guys alike. Below: Paisley prints showed up everywhere this year: shirts, sweaters, even jewelry and shoes. Warriors showed their fashion sense and continued to be some of the best-dressed students anywhere this year. Although we all ‘‘dressed to impress,” everybody wanted to show his or her own sense of individuality. The prevalent style for girls in 1985 was big shirts under big sweaters, with antique pins and long strands of pearls. There was a lot of paisley and flowers on everything they wore. On guys, we saw a lot of surfing-wear, but of course blue jeans remained every- one’s favorite thing to wear. In addition to accessories like scarves. Swatches could be seen (and heard) on many wrists. These watches again showed our individuality — whether clear, paisley, scented, or wrapped in “Swatch guards. Our hairstyles also expressed our different tastes. Some girls preferred asymmetrical cuts; some liked longer hair. The freshmen surfers had their own unique hairstyles. Wando is per- haps one of the only schools around to have students with these stripped, cropped, and sometimes radical cuts, each one expressing individuality itself. CLOSING 209 As another year ends, we’ll al- ways look back to this one and our own personal memories of it. The Seniors, having taken their cruise, at- tended their last Jr, Sr., and finally graduated, prepare to leave Wando and go out into the real world. The Juniors eagerly anticipate being on top and all the privileges that follow. The Sophomores look forward to becoming Juniors; although it will be their hardest year, they will come to feel like actual upperclassmen. And the Freshmen, well, will be recognized as human, as they plan for their revenge. So what is the point of Wando? It is not only a place to learn, it's the place where people with infinite styles and personalities come together at one common point. Even though we’re separated in many aspects, it takes all of us to make Wando what it is. 210 CLOSING Ackerman. Jennifer L. 89 Adams, Tammy C. 89 Addison. Charles L.
