Scott, Principal BS — Florida State, MAT and EDS — The Citadel I am firmly convinced that accountability is the one word most descriptive of this period in education. Also, there is a widespread move to improve educational quality. In reviewing our accomplishments over the last 4 years, we have concrete evidence that our students are achieving at a higher rate and excellence is a realistic goal. The Mt. Pleasant community is more aware than ever before of the many activities here and the quality of our academic program We appreciate the contribution of each member of the staff, faculty, and student body in making Wando High School the best Mr Quentin Scott. Principal It is increasingly apparent that Wando students improve scholastically each year. This year is no exception. I have also been impressed with the confidence and dedication exuded by the majority in their day to day pursuit of cur- ricular and extracurricular activities. As we continue to grow and learn we will make Wando an even greater school. Mr Carroll Davis. Assistant Principal W — Willingness to meet obstacles and find the best solutions. A — Ability to think, achieve, and cooperate. N — Navigate the course well and successfully travel through the 1983-84 school year. D — Dedicated to the best education possible. O — Optimistically look at our present and future. To the students — ’ If you obtain an education and never put it to use. it is of no value to you and you have wasted your time Reading maketh a full man. conference a ready man. and writing an exact man. Francis Bacon T.J Brown. Assistant Principal - Mr. Carroll Davis. Assistant Principal BA — Methodist. MAT — The Citadel Mr. Thomas Brown, Assistant Princi- pal BA — Clemson College. MA — College of Chas. Mrs. Eileen Vaughan. Assistant Principal Mr. Andrew Stamp, Comm. School Di- BA — Marrymount, MA — Duke, MEd — rector USC BA — Bowdoin, MEd — Univ. of Vir- ginia I will have to give you only the impressions of the last three months since I don’t have other years at Wando with which to compare this one. I have been very impressed with the quality of the facilities, the friendliness, courtesy and ability of the students and the expertise of a hard-working and caring administration and faculty. From my observation of first semester grades and conversations with students though. I know that we are not anywhere near reaching our potential Wando has all the ingredients of a really outstanding high school which would be recognized any- where and competitive with the best private and public schools in this country. What I see lacking on the part of many students is a real seriousness of purpose and the drive and dedication to do the very best. I spend so much of my time dealing with students who are smoking in the restrooms, tardy to classes or talking or playing in classes that I often wonder what school and education is really all about. I guess the conclusion of my observations is a challenge to all students to take advantage of the marvelous opportunity you have here at Wando to get the best education under the best staff, to stretch yourselves to the limit and make of yourselves and Wando the best they can be E. This was an outstanding year for the Junior class; we were very school spirited, had good representation at all sporting events, and experienced our first Junior-Senior. All in all, it was a year full of outstanding memories. Most of the people in the Junior class have matured since entering Wando as Freshman, and we enjoy looking back and remembering the great times that we have had. We have made many new friends who we will remember for a long time. The class of 1985 is eagerly looking forward to next year when, as Seniors, we can top everything that we have done as Juniors and show everyone that the class of 1985 is the most awesome class that Wando will ever have. . The 4-6 records posted by the Warriors is by no means any indi- cation of just what kind of football team Wando had this year, op- portunistic turnovers and bad breaks were major factors in a number of the Warriors narrow losses. Karlheinz said. They care less about everything (education, driver’s license). Children are included in the adult world at an early age. One of the main differences he found was that. They don't care about age too much. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it isn’t.’’ Monica Lingeri — Italy tn (or English) use Monica said this about Americans. I find them colder than people in Italy — have you ever heard the expression “hot Italian temperment ? I’m kidding; seriously I think we have more real friendships. When asked about slang words, she said; We have some expressions that people here don’t use. However. I think we use more words in our language, while Americans a single word for different meanings.” Anders Nordborg — Sweden Anders feels this way about American participation in the government; You seem to be less involved; people are afraid of voicing their opinions. Every one is so conservative and alike.” When asked about schools, he said; The schools in Sweden are harder because we have fewer tests. The relationships with teachers are not as good as they are here.” Nicolai Visser — Holland About clothes Nicolai says; The people in the states dress old-fashioned most of the time; even if somebody dresses wild or modern it is still behind the fashion in Europe. He says this about American patriotism. They’re a lot more patriotic than in Holland; everybody is proud of their country and start the morning with the national song. In Holland nobody who I know would stand up for the national song. I even think that the loudspeakers would be pulled off the wall after a couple of days. 168 Foreign Students Boy’s State L R: Vinnie Rhodes. Trevor Cannon. Barry Sharpe Governor’s School A committee of teachers select twenty-five students for Boy s State. They look for boys who make good grades and are interested in politics. Out of the twenty-five names sent in. only six are selected. The Boy's State Convention is held at the Citadel and is sponsored by the Ameri- can Legion. Pictured above: L-R Beth Gearhart. Kathy Miller Students interested in attending Governor's School, which is spon- sored by the office of the Governor of South Carolina, contact the guidance counselors. The counselors then turn in all the names, and a committee of teachers, counselors, and principals select the students who will fill out the applications. These are sent to a Governor's Com- mittee where they are screened, and the best are selected to attend Governor’s School. The committees look mainly for those students who show a gift or talent in a certain area. Awards 169 All These Happy Faces!!
