Legend 1983 Wando High School 1560 Mathis Ferry Rd. Mt. Pleasant, SC Volume X This year marks the tenth anmversity ot Wando High School Wando received its name from the Wando River, named tor the Indians who lived around it in the eighteenth century Wando has made many accomplishments and under gone many changes in its first ten years Three prmci pals have had a hand in Wando s development Mr Bergen. Mr. Reeves, and Mr Scott. We have seen a change in the school's appearance — the old smoking area has become a courtyard, complete with flowers and park benches The school has held eight state champion ships — all in girls' sports. The varsity cheerleaders placed sixth in the nation in 1981 Furthermore, the Wando band has done exceedingly well, constantly com peting and receiving superior'' ratings The Foreign Language Fair, held each year in Ladson, has been dominated by Wando; we have won first place every single year. The Warriors have shown to be generous donating large sums ot money, time, and food to various charities. Yes. Wando has proven itself an essential, msepara ble part ot the East Cooper community Wando s tirst ten years have been memorable, en oyable. and exciting Afterall. we're not ordinary anymore we re legend ary Student Life 2 Administration 17 Faculty 19 Classes 31 Beauties 91 Activities 99 Sports 107 Clubs ldb Closing 165 Ads 173 htle Page 1 WANDO AWAITS TT he seemingly short summers have brought about vast changes in Wando in the last ten years — and indeed since just last year. In 1973 when Wando first opened its doors, it did so without a history pod. A pod was just added in the last four years to replace the numerous trailers which Wando had. Also, the smoking area first began as the area between the gym, the vocational building, the band room, and the school. Years, however, have wrought changes in Wando. The trailers, for the most part, are gone — only six remain. The smoking area was changed from its first location to behind A pod, but it is now non existent, thanks to the regulations passed by the Charleston County School Board. The site of the old smoking area has become a courtyard, en- hanced by beautiful flowers and park bench- es. Perhaps the most significant change in Wando was the new stadium. For ten years, the Warrior football teams have used Jasper Green, located next to Moultrie, as a home held. Beginning with the 1983-1984 sched- ule, however, Wando will have its own stadi- um — for both football and track — right behind our gym. The new stadium will add a sense of belonging to the spirit of Wando, and, hopefully, it will add a few more confer- ence victories to our football teams’ records. 1. The sign says it all! 2. During a two day span. June 18 and 19. the iowcountry had seven and one halt inches of ram dumped on it by a tropical depression It seemed as if it would never stop raining However, when it did stop raining, many Wando Warriors could be seen wait mg in long traffic lines going to and from the beaches Many a Warrior could be seen strolling the beaches, swimming m the ocean, and sunbathing on the beach Yet. summer was not all fun Many Warriors were busy trying to earn money to spend during the school year Indeed, one could hardly walk into a grocery store without seeing a fellow student employed there. Grocery stores were not the only employers of Wando students Clothing stores, small businesses, camps, and the packing shed hired high school students Many students also earned extra, tax free money by employing themselves — cut ting lawns, raking leaves, and other odd obs Nearly everyone, though, found time — between the ram and work — for some kind of recreation Whether it was going to the beach, playing his favorite sport, or something else — the choice was up to the individual student Nevertheless, as all good things do. the summer came to an end School began the thirtieth of August, and another school year was at hand 1 David Cole works at McDonald's to earn money 2 Summer is work tor Teresa Meares 3. Student hie S WARRIORS’ FASHIONS AND 7 4 undo High School is fortunate r lijl enough to have a variety of people. ” Preppies, punk-rockers, and nor- mal people are all a part of Wando, and each group wears his own style of clothing. Preppies can easily be seen around the Wando campus. They wear Izod shirts, Ox- ford shirts, and, of course, Polo shirts. For the most part, their pants are also Izod. Pants and shirts are usually color-coordinat- ed with each other, with hair ribbons, and with watch bands. Of course, the outfit would not be complete with Izod socks. Prep- pies also finish their ensemble with Aigner accessories. Penny loafers, Docksides, and deck shoes are a part of a preppie's ward- robe; on the rare occasions when tennis shoes are worn, a preppie always wear Asahi. Punk rock groupies cannot be missed. Their hair is kinked; they always wear sun- glasses, and they frequently wear mini-skirts. Tiger-striped shirts and unmatched clothes round out their ensemble. Oh yeah, if you see someone walking around with safety pins in her ears, that is a punk rocker. The normal people are the hardest to spot. Sometimes they cross between the fine lines of preppie and groupie. Normal-ly, how- ever, they wear jeans. Usually they wear a nice shirt. They need not worry about color coordination (anything matches blue eans). Tennis shoes are their usual style. One can see that Wando is very diversi- fied!! 1. Ms. Johnson proves teachers are preps too! 2. Duck shoes — a must tor Charleston's wet weath- er. 3. Time out for some normal people. 4. Docksides are a comfortable casual. 5. Student Life 7 WARRIORS SHOW SPIRIT 1 Coich Sweeney announces the 1982 football team 2 These Warriors always wear spirit ribbons 3 These Warriors primp lor their picture 4 Teachers also wear their spirit ribbons. 5 The cheerleaders' Heat lor Sertoma won first place i | | ando Warriors have some of the I [ j greatest spirit in all of Charleston Many Warriors patronae the Ser toma football games Warriors cheer long and loudly to see their team score. During the school year, the various sports activities such as football, volleyball, basketball, and wrestling also invite many avid fans. Warriors show spirit in other ways. too. The week before Homecoming is spirit week On each day. students are supposed to wear the proper outfits. For example: if it is crazy hat day, each student ideally wears some type of zany hat An exceedingly large amount of students do wear the right outfit of the day Many students pick our infamous pep ral- lies to show their spirit. At each pep rally, teachers, acting as judges, pick which class has yelled loudest At the end of the year, the class who has won the most pep rallies wins the spirit award Need I remind anyone that this year's seniors, the class of 1983, are the defending champions? Another way of showing school spirit is by buying spirit ribbons. They go on sale before each football and basketball game by the student council. The proceeds are used by Wando’s student council to aid in some school project. So remember, before each game, see a student council member and support Wando by buying a spirit ribbon. 8 Student tile AUGUST 30, 1982 E? — ugust 30, 1982, marked the beginning of a new school year for Wando — its tenth anniversary. To many students, it marked the end of a seemingly short sum- mer break and the start of a long school year ahead. The first real sign of school was picking up books. Warriors were given the week of August 16-20 to pick up books, with seniors, of course, receiving theirs first. In addition to receiving books, we also got a first-hand look at our schedules and teachers. During the day, it was not uncommon to hear a student say, Oh no!!! Look whom I got for math . The next sure sign of school was the Sertoma Classic. This year we played Bonds Wilson. The Warrior offense played long and hard, and our defense held Bonds Wilson to only one touchdown in our 7 to 0 loss. Being held on the twenty-seventh of August, this was a foreboding event pointing to that inevi- table day ahead; the first day of school was almost upon us. 1. This Warrior receives her schedule on the day before school. 2. Jennifer Suits picks up her Enttsh books. 3. Tbbie Jones and Kelley Passadaifue tel caufht by the camera the first day of school. Student Life 9 The senior year at Wando was the hard- est emotionally. At every cross road one would think, Wow, this is my last football game, basketball game, or Home- coming. Everything seemed sad in retro- spect. The only way to keep those memories were with souvenirs of the school events such as spirit ribbons, game tickets, and newspaper articles. The Junior-Senior was just as good as ever, but a little sadder. Then, the year came closer to an end when we received caps and gowns. The saddest day of our high-school career, graduation day, was then at hand. After all, we were no longer Wando Warriors. SENIORS 1. the senior lunch table. 2. Student Life 11 WANDO’S 12 Student Lite A ne s sophomore year at Wando is quite 1:1 relaxing. Already one has exper- tenced Wando's fastpaced life. The sophomore year was a little more special than the freshman year because one had a greater affinity toward the school — the football games seemed better, and the soph- omore class showed much improvement at pep rallies. This is the year, however, that the curriculum got harder, and for the first time in some of our lives, we studied!!!! 1. This year was the true test. The yunior year, for the most part, is one’s hardest year academically. However, this was also the best year. Juniors received rings, and, this, in itself, makes the whole year fantastic. The Junior-Senior was also a great experience. One really felt impor- tant in his tuxedo going out with his fellow juniors and seniors. Also, at the end of the year, one could finally say, ‘7 am a senior. , something he had wanted to say for eleven years. 1. Kelley Koeper cuts her eyes is it to siy, Don't you dire tike my picture. 2. I could feel my heart pounding — oh no. will I ever find my homeroom ? Frightened as was. did find my homeroom that first day and all of my other classes Although terri- fied of Wando at first. Sedell 30 Faculty During the 1982-1983 school year, 1563 students attended Wando High: 316 seniors, 409 juniors, 411 sopho- mores, and 427 freshmen. Each class, as always, elected class presidents as represen- tatives to Wando's Student Council. Class presidents were as follows: senior class president, Beth Payne; junior class presi- dent, Trevor Canon; sophomore class presi- dent, Bernard Steed; freshman class presi- dent, Chris Wagner. These class presidents spearheaded the efforts of their respective classes toward accomplishing a great deal in the school year. Through the efforts of both the class presidents and the classes, the 1982-1983 became a year to remember. Division Page 31 The class of 19821983 is a class that will not be forgotten. We are the 10th class to graduate from Wando High School. We will always have great memories of Wando. Our homecoming, Wando v. Bat- tery Creek, at Jasper Green, the Junior Sen- ior at the Francis Marion Hotel, the senior trip in the Bahamas with Mrs. Weise and Mrs. Pinckney, the powder puff game spon- sored by the French Club will always be counted as cherished memories. We will nev- er forget meeting at Norman's after Friday- night games, and lunchroom duty with Coach Pavlisko. Though our high school careers are com- ing to an end, we have no regrets although some of us will be lowly Freshmen again. After graduation, we will walk in our sepa- rate ways, but since we are the class of 1983, we will remain this class m spirit. ... 5. Payne The Senior Committee is an essential part of Wando High. Each year, all teachers nominate the Seniors that they think will serve the school well. This list is then compiled and sent out to the teach- ers. The teachers, in turn, vote for the best students out of this list. The students who receive the most votes become the Senior Committee. The 1982-1983 Senior Commit- tee consists of 18 people: Mary Reid, Sally Miller, Tania Toney, Gail Linyard, Isetta Coakley, Veronica Washington, Mary Louise Frampton, Beth Payne, Susan Dalton, Jenni- fer Rogers, Priscilla Ford, Eddie Bello, Andy Gross, Michael Patterson, Doug James, Terry Bryan, Duval Euland, Beth Murray. The Sen- ior Committee is sponsored by Mrs. Harvey and Mrs. Kennerty. Both the Committee and the sponsors work hard during the school year. They build a float for homecoming, raise money for the Senior present, and make decisions concerning graduation. Wan- do's Seniors are fortunate to have this distin- guished group working for them. 32 Seniors SHEREE MICHELE ALBERS KIMBERLY JOYCE ALBRECHT Senior Y Club 3; Junior Y Club 1, 2; Pep Club 2; Class Miss I — Runner-up 2, 3; Drama Club 4; J.V. All of our beauties — Miss Wando, Miss Homecoming, Miss Legend, and our Class Misses — are not only beautiful but also are smart, witty, sincere, and well-liked. Each one exhibits qualities of which every young girl dreams. We pride ourselves on picking out the prettiest girl for one Miss, and then we out-do ourselves by picking out another girl, just as pretty, for another Miss. Some- times it seems as if there are too many pretty girls; one cannot decide on just one girl. However, one girl is always decided on, and we should feel fortunate to have so many lovely girls at Wando. 1983 MISS LEGEND 92 Beauhes Miss Legend was udged by loan Mack and Bill Fitzgerald from Channel 2. MISS LEGEND CANDIDATES Mary Pennewill Connie Edwards MR. MNDO 1983 r- Wando is selected by the votes ITT h's peers: he's nom'nj,ed by ■ senior homeroom sections and voted on by the entire school. He repre- sents the student’s choice of what Mr. Wando should be like. Sponsored by the Renegade staff, the contest centers around four finalists and Mr. Wando. The winner of the Mr. Wando contest is de- termined by the student who receives the most penny votes. 94 Beauties MISS WANDO 1983 The Miss Wando Pageant is a yearly event which is eagerly anticipated by many. In order to become a candiate. a girl must be one of two nominees from her homeroom and then be voted into the pageant by her class. Once in the pageant, she will compete against approximately 30 other girls from freshman, sophomore, and junior classes. Each contestant mo- dels an evening gown of her choice and ten finalists are chosen on the basis of beauty, poise, and her accomplishments both within and outside of Wando. The ten finalists compete in a talent show to de- cide who is to be crowned Miss Wando 19S3. The winner is crowned by her prede- cessor, Laura Manning, and she receives a beautiful bouquet of roses and recognition during the Homecoming Ceremonies. Beauties 95 MISS HOMECOMING 1982 TN it contestants were chosen for Miss Homecoming by the senior class. Se- iected by the entire student body, the winner and runner-up were named on No- vember 5,1982. During the half-time festivi- ties at the game, Theodesa Lyles was crowned Miss Homecoming by Mr. Scott, and Mary Pennewill was named first runner-up! Holding the tilte of Class Miss is a great honor!! 98 Beauties many activities go on during a typical school year at Wando: the Miss Wando Pageant, the Junior-Senior, Homecom- ing, the Homecoming parade, Awards' Day, Chorus productions, and intramural sports activities. Each activitiy is important be- cause Warriors are involved, and this involve- ment helps make the school that much dearer to us Warriors. Our Miss Wando Pag- eant picks one of the prettiest girls in the school; many of us are on hand to see the crowning. Just about everyone attends Homecoming and participates in the Home- coming parade. The Junior-Senior is a MUST for all Juniors and Seniors. The whole school recognizes the seniors at Awards' Day. Stu- dents also watch — as well as participate in — Chorus productions. Everyone who does get involved realizes how great Wando truly deep r T£| owder Puff was, as always, a Jl7 great experience. The Junior- X Sophomore team crushed the Senior-Freshman team. It was a memora- ble experience though as both teams tried to out do each other. It was a foggy night — cold and damp — but the girls fought hard to win the game. This year we played Battery Creek and, of course, we won. Our team looked super as our defense held Battery Creek back tor most of the night. Everyone, it seems, attends Homecoming — the stands were packed!!! Everyone en oys Homecoming because everyone is there, and being with your friends is what makes the years seem so good. 1) The Wando band begins the Homecoming Parade. 2) Miss Homecoming 1982, Theodesa Lyles, is crowned. 3) The Key Club float shared first place with the National Honor Society. We have had our share of great moments and not-so-great moments. In 1974 we were conference foot- ball champions, losing only to Summerville. In wrestling we have placed third in State twice, having four individual State Champi- ons. In 1976 we won the volleyball State Championship, undefeated; we also won, in the same year, the girts' basketball State Championship, undefeated; furthermore, we were undefeated in girls' track during the regular 1976 season, losing by 1 point the coveted State Championship — a point which would have set a national record. In 1977 and 1978 we continued dominating the volleyball State Championships, winning 78 straight matches and an unprecedented 7 Lower State Championships. Also, we won another girls' basketball State Champion- ship, another girls' track State Champion- ship, and a girls' cross country State Cham- pionship. During the 19801981 basketball season, our boys'team made it to the semi- finals of the State Championship before los- ing to eventual State Champion, Sumter. Football VOLLEYBALL TEAM EXCELS □ National Volleyball Coach Of The Year: Linda White ando has one of the truly great traditions in volleyball. In ten years the volleyball team has won three consecutive State Championships, been runners-up twice, and won seven Lower State Championships. Over the years, the teams have set a state record of seventy-eight consecutive wins; no other team has even come close! The mam reason for their success is their coach, Linda White. Coach White has played a major part in the development of sports at Wando. Wando boasts the top girts' athletic pro- gram in the state — holding eight State Cham- pionships in its first ten years — tour by Coach White. Under her tutelage, her volleyball teams have compiled a 313-53 win loss record. Coach White possesses a rare quality: the ability to talk to her teams in such a way that on the rare occassions when Wando has been down match- point, their seemingly inevitable defeat becomes a re oicing win. On the occassions when Wando has been down match-point, Coach White calls time-out, delivers one of her inspiring pep-talks, and the team pulls out a miraculous come-from- behmd deteat. It is this such quality to which one can attribute much ot Wando's success. In recognition of her fine job, Coach White has received a most prestigious honor; she was named National Volleyball Coach ot the Year by the National High School Athletic Coaches' Asso- ciation. This is, of course, the single greatest honor that could be bestowed upon a coach. It involves ridged competition as the winner ot the state competition advances to the region compe- tition and the competition continues until a na- tional winner has been chosen. Wando is fortunate to have one of its coaches such a distinguished Coach as Linda White. Watching one’s school team play in the state tournament of any sport is a once in a lifetime event. We, Warriors, should take advantage of seeing this event and support the Warriorettes as well as the Warriors!!!!! 'YfT fcellence! That is the one word to ■Iff describe the hard work and perior- mance of the volleyball team this season. This year's Warriorette team compiled a 23-6 win loss record. The team placed third in the conference, and it won the Porter Gaud Tournament — one of the strongest tourneys in the state as the eventual AAAA State Champion was in the ten team field. As a prelude to the start of the season, the team attend- ed camp at North Carolina. Here they practiced endless hours to perfect their skills. The hard work paid off. however, as the Warriorettes lost to only three different teams (they lost to Goose Creek three times — Goose Creek was the even- tual State Champ.) The team continued to improve their skills. Next year they will have four starters returning to the team. Again they will have strong competition in conference 6-4A. These girls have some- thing no other team in the area pos- sesses, determination. With the determi- nation to win our Warriorettes will again capture the State Tournament, be it next year or ten years from now, and will bring the State Title back to WANDO, its true home!! This was the first time our team had a losing record. The young team was led by only three seniors: Jennifer Johnson, Mean Wright, and Johnette English. Juniors such as Larraine Frazier, Terry Windham, and Joyce Isaac gave the team help too. Next year the Warriorettes will be aided by the J. V. team, which ended up with a strong conference showing. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL IMPROVE RECORD w ando has always had a strong girls’ basketball tradition. For many years the Junior Varsity teams went through the seasons undefeated. However, as tough- er competition emerged, our Warriorettes also became tougher. The last few years, nevertheless, our young teams have strug- gled. There have been three coaches over the last four years, and therefore, the teams have not had a stabilizing factor. Now, though, a new Junior Varsity Coach has come forth — Karen Cook. Ms. Cook is a former Wando track standout. She realizes the po- tential her team has, and she will, in a few years, be able to mold the JV girls into a fine squad. The JV girls practice every day after school trying to gain the necessary exper- ience that will enable them to play basketball for many years to come. They work many hours with little recognition. The work that the JV program does is an essential part of the Varsity sports program at Wando. All the memories of the past year are remembered by everyone at some time — be it then, in ten years, or in twenty years. The yearbook is filled with these past memories: memories of the football games, Friday nights at Pizza Hut, the Junior-Senior, Pow- der Puff, and other school outings. It is only at the end of the year that we look back and see what a great school we are leaving, and Wando is a great school. Mi The ending of a school year is always sad. One looks back al- most always and remembers; he remembers the football games, dates, Fri- days and Saturdays he spent with a friend; the Junior-Senior, Homecoming, people, teachers, and much more. The Seniors especially are melancholy; to them, there is no more high school — no more Wando. There is only college. Yet, remembering high school events and people should make one happy. Looking at an old friend should make one recall all his past high school experiences ... 1) The pom pon line performs at Homecom- ing. 2) The Warrior band plays at Sertoma. 3) I dare you to take my picture. 4) Marching is a never-ending teat. 5) “Let's ad pose for the camera. 166 Closmg WARRIORS FROM 1983 168 Closmg PEOPLE AND EVENTS 1983 — A YEAR WE WILL NOT 170 Closing 1) Economics isn't oil thit is crtnktd up to . 2) AH students enjoy the Nando library. Kirkland October 1, 1964-November 1, 1982 Remember yesterday, dream about tomorrow, but live today. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To: Dicksie Louise Kirkland When God took you, dear friend, It hurt so much we cried. We never told you how much we cared, And that's what hurts inside. Your death seemed so senseless Although no one is to blame. It seems your life was full And God says your time just came. We thank you for your friendship When we needed it the most. And now we think its our turn To try and be your host. We think of you as our sister The one some never had. We went through the good times And we went through the bad. To think of you as gone just Makes us very sad. Your spirit lives on And so must we. We think of you and sometimes cry But now its time to say goodbye. But whenever we have a problem We'll come talk to you We know you can hear us Although we can't hear you. And when the first of each month rolls around We'll bring a yellow rose and lay it on the ground It will be the symbol to remind us of our friendship And just how much we cared With Our Love and Everlasting Friendship Pamela Hatfield and Wando High School WHS B0IH IBS Holius thanks tor all the great memories. I’ll miss you next year! — Dino “Phantoms Live and should be carried on. Ms. Simmons: We want to say thanks for all the work you've done, the tins were kind of successful, but selling was no fun. We learned a lot at camp — sometimes it seemed blah, but you're always so optimistic, you shout “Rah, rah, rah!’’ You've done so much work — so many pages, and you never yell at us even though we have our rages. The annual would never be the same without you, we really appreciate all the work that you do. Kathi and Ebbie Ms. White: Thanks for all the great volleyball games. High school would have been NOTHING without them. I'll always regret not winning that 4th title: I guess some things are not meant to be. Please win OUR title next year. P.S. Don't forget to press against Summ. when you have a 45 point lead. Ebbie '83 Legend best ever — Congratulations Ebbie and Kathi love K.S. Ms. Berkhan: Your help on the annual was really quite great, but when you saw our dinner bill we thought us you would hate. $48.89 is not a great deal, but we were talking about a really good meal. You still haven't learned to cross the streets in town; be careful you won’t have us next year to guide you around. Oh yeah, those pictures that you could not find: You blamed it on us and to you we'll remind: YOU lost the pictures and blamed it on Ebbie, But you found out the culprit, it was really DB! Kathi and Ebbie Ebbie, you're sometimes my enemy, but always my friend — Sometimes we have disasters, but there's always perfection in the end. The memories we have shared will not fade in '84, but instead grow stronger as our friendship matures. This will I always cherish, the laughs, the talks, the fights, the tears, the friendship we have is all so dear. I Love You! Kathi Congratulations class of '83! K.L. This year’s Bowl was held February 9,1983. Com- petition is tough. Students are asked questions about events in history re- lated to blacks. Members of the win- ning team were Damon Fordham, Ve- ronica Washington, and Melanie Wil- liams. PARENT VOLUNTEERS y 11 ando is fortunate to have parent 1'1'J volunteers to help the office, attendance office, and library workers. Each volunteer donates her time and energy to help make Wando the great school that it is! Without these volunteers' assistance, Wando would not get along so well as it does. Everyone appreciates the great work these ladies do. L Io R: Kay Childs. Nina Wilson, Rose Kavanaugh. PaI lohnson, Bea Weston, ludy Cannon. Lynda Anderson. Here are some brief updates, sport-by-sport, of how the teams did up to March 4, 1983: Wrestling: Wando clinched third place in Con- ference action. Eight wrestlers qualified for the Lower State Tournament. Out of them, two Chris Frazier and Waverly Pinckney, qualified for the State Tournament. Girls' Basketball: Wando had its first losing season ever as the girls' team had an 8-14 record. Wando's bright spot in the season was its defeat of the 8 team in the state, Berkeley, 44-41. Larraine Frazier was named to the all area team. Girls' JV Basketball: The JV team had a very good year. They finished with a 10-3 slate. Boys' JV Basketball: The boys' team, as always, had another winning season. They finished the year with a record. They also figure to be a great asset to next year's varsity program which has four starters graduating. Boys’ Varsity Basketball: The boys' team is still in season. They defeated West Florence in the quarterfinals of Lower State, 73-54 Their next game is against Eau Claire. Every one wishes them the best, so BRING BACK THE STATE TITLE!!!
