Text from Pages 1 - 232 of the 1980 volume:

To one and all, the 1979 1980 school year started off much too soon, even with the first 3 days being cancelled by Hurricane David. When it fi- nally did begin, seniors and freshmen alike had adjustments to make. 2 OPENING 1 Warriors have the ball on the fourth down. 2 John Bonds sits all alone. 3 Lark MacDonald and friends take a break from skating. 4 Many Wando students find a summer job at Heath Farms. 5 Halls are crowded between classes. 6 Varsity Cheerleaders look on as the Warriors win. 7 Skateboarding — always a danger- ous sport. 8 Terance Llnyard and Cheryl Rouse meet between classes. OPENING 3 4 OPENING 1 Seniors enjoy each others’ conversa- tion at lunch. 2 Students study in the library. 3 Mrs. Elizabeth Clark smiles for the camera. 4 Roxanne VanMeter brushes her hair before going to class. 5 Cramming — an activity well known to most Wando students. 6 Suzy Watson, J.D. Carter, and Ed Tavel discuss the new school year. 7 Daydreaming in class is JoEUen Cook. OPENING 5 The students of Wando High School really showed their spirit in 1979-1980. Everyone did his share to keep morale up and to keep Wando’s name number one in the state. Sports were patronized and clubs did their part in contributing to “Warriorlsm.” R! § iy ®k piri! 1 Steve Walton shows his school spir- it. 2 A smile is offered by Molly Sheppard as she hurries to class. 3 Darrell Cobb prepares himself for skating at Red Wing Rollerway. 4 J.V. Cheerleaders get ready to cheer at a pep rally. 5 Silence is a single boat docked on the Isle of Palms. 6 Students sit in study hall on the first day of school. OPENING 7 8 OPENING The Academics pro- gram at Wando has undergone a few changes since last year. Most of the ad- ministrators and stu- dents feel that these changes were for the best. The courses offered at Wando have changed, also. A few courses were added to different depart- ments. especially his- tory and foreign lan- guage. Courses have been offered at Basic. Regular, and Ad- vanced levels, as well as Advanced Place- ment courses In sev- eral areas. — — — ACADEMICS 9 County Administration 1 • ; rw , v w'Ci' 4 IMf School Board L to R: K. Wrixon, J. Randolph, S. Mellichamp, K. Shuler, not pictured J. Roitesch Knowing that they have many responsibilities to the teachers, the school, and the students, the Administration at Wando worked hard to carry out these respon- sibilities. The Adminis- tration is a group of hard-working people dedicated to making the school run smoothly. They talk to teachers and students and do what they think is best for them. Some people find fault with the things the administration does, but they continue to try to do their best. The Ad- ministration works hard and diligently to make Wando a school every- one can be proud of. WHS Advisory Council L to R: Mike Ward, Mr. Tolley, Mr. Austin, Mr. Scott. Mrs. Kay, Donna Buckner Mrs Keenan 10 ACADEMICS A New Principal This year Wando High School had the honor of receiving Quentin L. Scott as it’s new head administrator. Mr. Scott, previously the administrator of Stall High School, has made many very beneficial changes at Wando. He feels that it takes coo- peration from everyone, the administration and the students, to make a school successful. In Mr. Scott’s own words, “Administrators are here to serve teach- ers and students, not just to enforce rules.” Wando High School has as fine a faculty and stu- dents as anywhere else and with a leader like Quentin L. Scott, Wando will prove that it is and will remain to be the best school in the lower state. Mr. Scott says, “Pride is the secret word — in yourself. In your school, and in your job.” ACADEMICS 11 Assistant Principals 12 ACADEMICS Guidance Attendance Office ACADEMICS 13 14 ACADEMICS Science Department The Science Department of- fers courses in Chemistry, Physical Science, Biology, Physics, and Marine Biol- ogy. Certainly many things of importance are overlooked but most of the happenings should be found in this section. This section deals with the action and en- ergy of the Wando Warriors and how the students strive to improve themselves as well as the school in general. ACTIVITIES 97 Although the students of Wando do enjoy the time they spend at school they attentively watch the clock on Friday afternoons. Favorite Warrior haunts are Burger King, the Redwing Rol- lerway, the Mount Pleasant Cinema and the major sports events of Wando. 98 ACTIVITIES 1 Many warrior fans spend their week- ends watching our girls play volleyball. 2 Another place to find Warrior fans on weekends is at the football games. 3 Along with the fun of weekends, the band members also know what practice is. 4 As soon as Glenn Ruth steps off the bus on Friday afternoon, he starts mak- ing plans for the weekend. 5 Debbie Weathers and Steve Jamison enjoy each other’s company. 6 A lot of Wando students, like Steph- anie White, take part-time babysitting jobs on weekends. 7 Abraham Singleton waits for school to open. 8 Before the weather got too cold, many weekends were spent at the wa- ter slides. 9 Wando students performed in the musical Seize the Street. Girls wore bright-colored overalls, daring slit skirts and dresses, dressy blouses and skirts, three- piece suits, and shoes of all descriptions. Some well known brands were Aigner leath- er goods, Bass shoes, and Calvin Klein jeans and skirts. Gold memory jewelry was very popular and very expensive with the price of gold at over $400 an ounce. Boys generally stuck with their Levi’s blue jeans, Topsiders, and Izod shirts. His name is Ricardo Jimenez. He is twenty-one years old and is now residing with the John Jacques family in Mt. Pleasant. Ricardo is a 21-year-old senior. He is finishing school in the United States in hopes of pursuing a medical career. School in Costa Rica consists of elev- en years of subjects similar to those we have here with the exception of mandatory Spanish. Customs in Costa Rica are sometimes the same and are sometimes very dif- ferent from those in the United States. In Costa Rica there are very few cars. Therefore most dates are meetings of a boy and girl at a public place. Most Costa Ricans wear basi- cally the same types of clothes that are popular in the United States. The boys are especially fond of blonde- haired, blue-eyed girls. Girls marry between the ages of eighteen and twenty-two. The general consensus on Costa Ri- can opinion of the U.S. is that we are rich, much larger, and more liberal on political issues. On the subjects of sports, swimming is very popular as is motorcross. Soc- cer, futbol in Spanish, is by far the most popular of all the sports. An- other pastime that is popular in Costa Rica is disco dancing. Costa Ricans dance to our rock-and-roll and disco music even though some cannot un- derstand the words. Spanish music is also popular, but it is not in anyway related to our pop music. Artists such as the Carpenters, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and Donna Summer are widely enjoyed. Among the problems of living here, Ricardo mentioned that relaxing with other people is difficult because the customs and language are so differ- ent. All in all, Ricardo believes that Amer- ica is a good country. 110 ACTIVITIES Wando, like most other high schools, is the site from which much young love is sparked. Some of the couples that are created here last a lifetime. Others seem to last no time at all. These couples are just a few of the many frequently seen in the halls of Wando. H VVlOVS l y tn os I Chatting between classes are Windy Aytes and Hank Harden. 4 Mary Peters gives Tommy Col lins a triumphant smile. 6 Mike Moraska and Marion von Kolnitz stop at their locker be tween classes. £T I I . 5 Bill McKen- zie and Laura George enjoy each other's company dur- ing lunch. 8 Donna Moore and Bii- ly Sisson enjoy talking at school. ACTIVITIES 111 Many members of the student body of Wando participated in the ageold tradition of the Powder-Puff football game, sponsored by the French Club. The 1979 game drew a record crowd and a great amount of participation from players, coaches, fans, and French Club members. The fi- nal score of the game was Seniors — Freshmen: 12, Ju- niors — Sophomores: 6. 1 Mary Ann Fosberry and Alice Watkins take time out for a picture. 2 A pause in the action to check for a down. 3 Another possible touchdown for the Senior-Freshmen team. 4 The beautiful cheerleaders cheer the team on. 5 Lovely Michael Joregenson draws support from the crowd. 6 The cheerleaders show their skill with a pyramid. 7 Playing around before the game. ACTIVITIES 113 The Warriors are extremely proud of their marching band. The band practices hard all year round and competes in many state competitions, usually com- ing out on top. The marching band performs well. 1. Mr. Basil Kerr directs the band. 4. Band drummers practice hard. 2. The march begins. 5. The band performs at half-time. 3. Drum major Alice Watkins leads the band. SPORTS 115 WANDO FOOTBALL The 1979-1980 Wando Warrior varsity football team had its share of ups and downs this season. Even though the Warriors had a young team with only six seniors they always kept the fans guessing. Lead by Coach Sweeney the Warriors never quit fighting no matter what the score. The team throughout the year kept up the Warrior pride and dignity which goes along with being a true Wando Warrior. The team will only be loosing 6 seniors and with re- turning juniors the team should have a great year in 1980-1981. Couples found the cold weather convenient. 194 CLOSING 1 Rachel Logan prepares to make a call. 2 Waiting for school to open are Wayne Thompson, Chris Horry, and Wanda Green. 3 Wando’s band prepares for another perfor- mance. 4 Erin O’Neill studies for a hard test. 5 Maurice Brown escorts Miss Homecoming candidate Margaret Stokes. 6 Members of Pippin attentively watch the pep rally. 7 The Key Club’s float was one of many In the Homecoming parade. 8 Beth Dicks wears cold weather clothes. 9 Mrs. Mullen teaches her class outside on a warm day. 10 What did you say?’’ asks Mr. Harper. 11 Beth Ammons daydreams in class. 12 Matthew Mazyck gives the photographer a quick smile. 13 Cold weather called for warm toe socks.
