I Past5HePast5HeScHoo15HeScHoo15HeScHoo1 . . . I ScHool5HeScHool gn Dedication This school is and has been many things, some of them bad, most of them good, but all of them ours. And because these things are ours, and because they are real, they are important, maybe not earth- shaking, but important. The purpose of this annual is to try to be a mirror. A magical glass in which we can see not only what was, but what almost was, or maybe even what just might have been. This an- nual, like this school, is the students, and it is an expression of the personality of the student body. Life, such as ours, can not be captured between covers of a book or put intovwords. This is merely a shadow of us, but we can look at it and remember. This is the last annual that will ever be printed at Wampee, and therefore it is only fitting that it be dedicated to you, the students, and to the school which we all love. Ute Haculfy Day in and day out a group of individuals work at, what can be, at the same time, one of the most thankless and one of the most rewarding of jobs. Between badgering and being badgered by students, popping excedrin and drinking coifeeg our teachers perform the primary and most important job in our school. The ritual to learning is both long and complicated, and every student knows Hrsthand the job that our teach- ers do, both to and for them. When a student enters Wampee he is little more than a child. When he leaves he is a scholar. Our teachers are the catalyst that effects this change. They do their job well. ,3 Hg' X SEQ 4. my ff 1 va Y' ' O. pa-e ,sup--P U. 1,fz1f 1: - U K Aww, wr 1- v 9 g ' ,f , Mrs. Sue Collins - Jr. High English. Mr. Don Morrell - English, Journalism. It's a group of young women and men who have cared enough about themselves and the world they are going to live in to stick out four years of high school and get an education. Wampee has provided them the opportunity. By the same token, they, as students, have given Wampee something. Without its students Wampee would not be more than a group of empty buildings. They have given it life and lots of it. SENIOR SPONSORS: Lett to Right: Miss Moore Mrs. Ward, Mrs. Holmes. Breck Todd, Vice-Pres. Sue Thompson, Sec.-Tres. Herman Holmes, President Iris L. In its four years the Student Council has made great strides in the exer- cise of student democracy, in school spirit, and in student- faculty relationships. Tangible evidence of the Student Coun- cil's accomplishments are: our valued break between fifth and sixth periods, our student can- teen in the gym fthe only one in our countyj, and our great Council movies during activity period. The Student Council is not con- tent to rest on its laurels, how- ever. Presently they are working on many projects, the most no- table of which is their attempt to give us an indoor smoking area. With the loss of elev- en seniors from a team that went to the state semi-finals, it was definitely a rebuilding year for the Indians. The club contained only five or six boys who had seen action in the ranks of high school football. With the loss of these seniors and the seeming- ly unconquerable schedule, defeat was bitter, however, this made the team come fighting, more determined than ever. This group of dedicated boys worked hard and finished with a 3 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie record. In these four losses, never once did our team give up or admit defeat until the final play had been played and the last second passed. We are proud of our team, their spirit, and their enthusiasm. 94 Coaches Joe VanFaussien and Dave Dickson give pregame advice to Mack Neeves. Runner-Up 7-A Conference A TROPHY!!! The honors in basketball at Wampee were reserved for the girls' basketball team in 1970. Practice and hard work began on November 3, 1969, with team members displaying more conscientious dedication and selfsacrifice. The girls' basketball team earned a 12-7 record for the season, finishing as runner-up of the 7-A Confer- ence Tournament - a fitting exit for the Wampee girls, basketball team. These accomplishments were the best for the girls' team in many years. From this super tream graduate five very good players: Connie Chestnut, Gretchen Lew- is, Linda Lewis, Sissy Livingston, and Nancy Moore. We, the members of the girls basketball team, would like to thank Coach Joe Van Faussien for his leadership and encour- agement over the past two years which led us to this trophy. This is the first year that Wampee has had a Girls J. V. Basketball team. The main reason was that there was so much interest shown in the junior high and ninth grade. Although these girls didn't get started until late in the season, they still went to practice and showed their enthusiasm. In baseball no one man can be singled out for his efforts, everything that is done is the team's doings. For this reason thanks for par- ticipation are extended not to each player but to the whole teamg from waterboy to the coach himself. . . a team. 4 Joe Van Faussien, Sponsor. www 5512 Course Kings After placing first in the conference and fifth in the state in 1969, Wampee's Sinister Six Cbetter known as the first unitj trek out for a try at becoming the first team to repeat as conference champions. She holds the office of Secretary-Trea- surer of the Senior Class and was elected to the Hall of Fame for Character and Personality. Sue enjoys walking on the beach, good music, and loves to read. In the future, Sue hopes to go into some type of secretarial work. j .... . S it r 124 A 63? unior Beauty Phyllis Permenter Phyllis is the attractive seventeen year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. R. Permenter. Phyllis is very active in school related activities. Some of her activities include the pep club, science club, FHA, Block W club, and Cheerleading. She enjoys swimming, horseback riding, and cheering. She says that she would also enjoy suring if she could just stay on the board. After getting her degree in Elementary Education, Phyllis feels that she would like to teach. Hresfiman Beauty Sonia Hamilton Sonia, Freshman Class Beauty, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pope Hamilton of Windy Hill Beach. She enjoys school work in general and history in particu- lar. She is active in outside activities and enjoys the pep club, swimming, skating, dancing, and especially boy watching. After graduation, she would like to become a model or a fashion de- signer. Sophomore Beauty Dianne Ward Dianne is the fifteen year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ward and is a sophomore at Wampee. Among her hobbies are basketball, swimming, and horseback rid- ing. Her school activities are Science Club, Pep Club, Student Council, and first string varsity basketball. She was recently chosen on the up- per 7-A all-conference basketball team, a credit to her and to the school. Her philosophy in life is Live everyday as your last, there may be no tomorrow? Hall of Fame members are chosen for such categories as: academic achievement, leadership, service, character, athletics, and personality. Some of these Seniors, in fact many of them, have been selected for more than one category indicating their well rounded activities and achieve- ments. Nancy Moore has served her school to the best of her abilities in the past as a member of the Wampee Basketball team. She has such other honors as Cheer- leader in the ninth grade, Block Newspaper typist, Secretary of the Junior Class, Treasurer of the Science Club in both her Senior and Junior years, and typist of the Annual in her Senior year. When you think of a true friend, you think of some- one who is both honest and dependable. The Senior Class feels we have found a true friend in Nancy. Nancy's truthfulness and reliability have won her the honor of the Senior Hall of Fame. 'A 1 rags. Each year the Senior Class nominates three of its most outstanding male stu- dents on the basis of scholastic excellence, school spirit, leadership, and personality. The faculty votes on these nominations and selects Wampee's King Teen. The King Teen competition is sponsored by Wofford College and the winner is eligible for a scholarship grant from that college. This year's King Teen is Eddie Coffey. Eddie personifies the qualities of a King Teen. Throughout his high school years, Eddie has taken part in virtually every ac- tivity at Wampee. We don't know what the future holds, but if Eddie continues as he has he will really be worthy of the title, King Teen. Football and basketball, who do these sports bring to mind? Timmie Edge, a classic example of hard work and spirit. Timmie is the kind of guy who's not just satisfied with watching, he has to participate. Timmie has been playing varsity sports for his entire high school career. Perhaps it is not correct to say that Timmie plays, when Timmie is on the field or court he works, and works hard. For his drive and desire Timmie has won the admiration and re- spect of his teammates and classmates. Most recently, he was elected to the All-Conference football team. It is only fitting that he also be placed in this, the Hall of Fame. Ever walk down the walk way, bend over to pick up your books and suddenly be greeted by a cheery hello? Chances are you have, and up- on looking up, you find the warm smile of Amanda Gore. Amanda, no matter how busy, can always find time to greet a fellow class- mate. She is active in FHA, Science Club, Block and Head Cheerleader. In all of these she has served her school well, especially cheer- leading. It is she who has to see that Pep Ral- lies, as well as games, come off with perfection. She has been faced with a lot of problems this year but still has come up shining, such is the mark of a true friend. Ability is not the only component of a good ath- lete. Drive, desire, and spirit are just as, or even more important to play, than the native ability of the individual. Nobody, on any team, plays harder or with more spirit than Sissy Livingston. Sissy is the type of player that people go to see at a game. While she is on the court, she pours everything she has into the game. Off of the court, Sissy is friendly and unoppossing, belying her ferocity in basketball. Sissy has helped lead our girls basketball team to wins preluding the capture of this yearis Runner-up Conference 7-A Trophy. Sissy is more than a great competitor, she is a great person. Mad ff' One of the many ways in which a student is recognized by her fellow students is by her service to her school. Marcia Bellamy has com- plied an impressive record of service during her years at Wampee. During her freshman year she served as the FHA Chairman of Recreationg as a sophomore she acted as Secretary of the Student Councilg and as a junior she served as FHA Reporter. Presently she represents both her school and her state as State FHA Presi- dent. Marcia has also taken part in every other major activity at Wampee, the school where she is proud to be a member. l 2 The main purpose of a school is to teach. The duty of the student is to take advantage of the knowledge offered by the school. How- ever, this does not mean that a school should be a monastary with its cloistered walls and silent monks. Eddie Coffey is an example of a student who can work hard and still retain a Warm personality and a supreme good humor in the face of a tough work load. Eddie ranks in the top 'tive of the Senior Class. His laugh and warm smile are familiar landmarks around school. High standards of character, and dedication to study, are excellent credentials for any per- son. Herman Holmes personiiies the best in both of these categories. Throughout his high school career Herman has maintained an ex- cellent scholastic average and was his class Head Marshal at last year's graduation. Her- man scored high on both his SAT and National Merit Scholarship tests. Unlike most people, Herman doesn't speak unless he has something to say, but when he does it's usually worth listening to. Herman embodies honesty and integrity in everything he says and does, and Wampee is rightly proud to have him as a representative to the outside world. Look around the campus and listen for some- thing to be said about 'last nightis game and chances are Donald Edge is doing the talking. Don is one of Wampee's most sports-minded persons. He has played football and baseball throughout his high school years and has played well. Donald has been selected for the title of All-Conference Linebacker in his senior year. In basketball he is not far behind, He played the game in both his junior and senior years. For his athletic abilities Donald is a member of the Senior Hall of Fame, an honor he so well deserves. No matter how gloomy a morning may start off, one cheering note is always sure to be heard around the middle of first period. This is when Myra Joyner flys in with the absentee list. Her cheerful smile and warm laugh are capable of brightening the worst day or the blackest mood. Myra is always willing to help her friends in any way possible, and this is probably the reason you usually find her in the role of peacemaker. Myra is always jovial and friendly, and she is a welcome sight in the smoking area bumming cigarettes, or in the gym bumming a drink. She always seems to carry a ray of sunshine with her wherever she goes and uses it to brighten the people around her ff ' .-fgfr fiqf 'QI' 4. -P.,'-'rfb Y X il -16 ' ,Y K . 5-'ew 1' q bi Rather to be small and shed a light than big and cast a shadow. These words express the personality of Sue Thompson. Her warmth and friendliness make her a favorite wherever she goes. And her friends include almost every- one. Under her unimposing but lovely exterior beats a heart of purest gold. Her high standards are an example to her friends and a source of pride to ther parents. She is a member of many school clubs in which she takes an active part. Sue loves music and plays the piano with the same purity and grace that she does every- thing else. Beauty, character, talent, and per- sonality, it's hard to believe that all of these traits could exist in such an excellent molding of one person. gs. S , Of all the aspects of school life scho- lastic achievement is one of the most important. Jimmy Collins, besides being active in many extracurricular activities which include the National Honor So- ciety, Annual Stafff and football, has maintained a high scholastic average throughout his six years at Wampee. His membership in the Beta Club and then the National Honor Society during all of those six years shows his academ- ic achievements. During his Senior year, Jimmy was chosen as 'Star Stu- dent and a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, the first one in Wampee's his- tory. Jimmy sets high goals and stan- dards for himself and meets these am- bitiously. Such qualities have deserv- ingly placed him in the Senior Hall of Fame. There are many things which go to make a person a leader. Breck Todd embodies many leadership qualities. During his junior year, he was Junior Class President, Student Council member, and a member of the Annual Staff. In Breck's senior year, he was Vice-President of the Senior Class, and Editor-in-Chief of the Smoke Signals. He has been a member of the National Honor Soci- ety, where he was treasurer for two years, since its formation. Breck also participates actively in many other clubs. Despite his many activities, he maintains a high scholastic average and is never too busy to help a friend. Generally the world of sports is a man's realm in which there is little chance for a girl. Here at Wampee, there is only one recourse for a sports minded female - Girls' Basketball. Gretchen Lewis displays her great athletic ability on the basketball court. Her Herce conndence and her great ability, couple to make her the type of ball player to be selected All- Conference two years in a row. Gret- chen is highly intelligent and shines in the classroom as well as on the playing court. Her ideas, like her playing style, are original and un- compromising.
