Debaters . . . The Debate season was highlighted with a first place finish at Regionals. WHS complet- ed the tournament 9-3 giving them the oppor- tunity to compete at State. This was the sec- ond year in a row the Debate team qualified for State under Mr. Kapfer. The regular sea- son also brought much success. Those placing in tournaments were: Chuck Banks, Denise Brazier, 2nd, Washington, 3rd, Concordia; Mary Beth White, Rick Hiegert, 4th, Concor- dia; Janette Roth, Susan Bosk ill, 3rd, Sante Fe Trial; Rick Hiegert, Shari Smith, 1st, Wa- baunsee; Buck Peddicord, Todd Brethour, 1st, Leavenworth; (WHS also won sweeps at Leav- enworth). 1. 1977-78 Debate Squad. 2. WHS Regional Champs, (L to R): Jane Smith, Janette Roth, Rick Heigert, Chuck Banks, Charlene Farrell, Lynette Roth. 3. Rich Hiegert, 1st Affirmative, was one of two novices on the Regional and State team. 4. Charlene Farrell, 1st Negative, not only out-spoke but out-classed all her opponents. 5. Chuck Banks, 2nd Affirmative, made his second trip to Regionals and State. 6. Janette Roth, 2nd Negative, had the best speaker average on the team. 22

Singers Have Busy Year The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat! Disappointment spread over the faces of many after hearing the re- sults of the State competition held in Emporia. Of the 13 entries from Wamego, we received only one I rating. It was not a great year but we worked harder than the ratings show, commented Keith Collett, vocal music director. Besides State competition, the choir presented an all-American concert in the fall. They also presented their 5th annual Feast of Carols at Christmas, sang on WIBW television, attended league vocal clinic, and performed a Spring variety show featuring antique popular music.
